I'm looking for something new to listen to, and want some suggestions. I would like to hear some good technical death metal style music with CLEAN vocals. I can't think of any good examples outside Cynic and Control Denied.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Mar 23,2011 7:53pm
Uh.... that's a tough one... maybe Martyr? Not exactly clean vocals, more like old school thrash vocals...

the only band that exists is Hum, obviously

Spiral Architect
and just because I think everyone should listen to them: Anglagard

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 11:50am
I've got Spiral Architect's album. Very good. Bassist is freaking amazing.

SO far I'm digging Martyr. Not quite what I'm looking for vocally, but still 1000X better than the cliche/typical vocals I hear on everything these days. Almost Nuclear Assault style singing.

I will check out anglagard next.

Nevermore ftw.

toggletoggle post by BSV at Mar 24,2011 11:59am
last tech band that really caught my attention was Stargazer.

Whenever I feel bored or lost in tech stuff I just throw on Arghoslent.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Mar 24,2011 12:11pm
pete, im pretty impressed that you've never heard martyr. get their whole catalog pronto.

No, not just clean vocals. I wanted tech/death with clean vocals. Nevermore is just modernized thrash/Sanctuary. I love them, but not exactly what I'm looking for. I want bassists that go weedly weedly on a fretless while the guitarists do fancy things over insane drumming.

I love Nevermore and Sanctuary, by the way, just want to clarify that's NOT what I'm seeking.

I'll check both of these out now.

Where should I start? Oldest stuff, or newest stuff?

I'm digging it. Reminds me of Nuclear Assault but with guitar playing reminiscent of old Artillery (Terror Squad era, not By Inheritence)

Which in turn makes me want to go listen to some vio-lence. For some reason all thrash makes me want to listen to Vio-Lence.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 12:17pm
Hey Josh,

Ironic - just asked this question elsewhere and was told "The newest Abnormality is fucking awesome. Get on that".

toggletoggle post by BSV at Mar 24,2011 12:18pm
DEMILICH kills an all but Nepisthe pale's in comparison to the mighty Arghoslent catalog. But don't get me wrong DEMILICH still is one of the most criminally overlooked bands in the history of metal.

think i got a copy somewhere here in my room. you should swing up and blaze headies!

all 3 full lengths (hopeless hopes, warp zone & feeding the abcess) are mandatory IMO. though WZ and FTA are their later, more mature/technical albums.

Recommend me a particular song. So far the couple I listened to on Youtube weren't very good (kung bore and the musical box). Sounded like hippy shit. As much as I love prog, Yes and other hippy shit makes me want to puke. They get points for having a lefty in the band, however. Just too mellow and abstract for me.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 12:25pm
I'm getting a little overwhelmed. Here's the list I'm working on - PLEASE point out if I missed one:

Anglagard
Martyr
Stargazer
Arghoslent
Demilich

Josh, that sounds awesome. Finally got to blaze with some other RTTP folks the other day, it's so cool being able to talk about music with people that KNOW ABOUT music again. Most of my local friends are the type that listen to one thing and one thing ONLY.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 12:26pm
Hey josh, gimme an album title or song for Stargazer. I'm looking for it, but keep getting the old Rainbow/Blackmore tune.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 12:30pm
Arghoslent sounds killer so far. Listening to The Grenadier. I really like the music. Vocals are unnecessary. Actually sounds a LOT like Beyond the Sixth Seal's "Earth and Sphere" disc. Not the latter Crowbar sounding shit.

I miss the 80's and 90's, where even the guys that didn't sing all sounded different (death, exodus, etc...) and the clones hadn't set in.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 12:31pm
Demilich - EGADS! Not a fan. I've done poops that sound exactly like that singer, and I don't want to remember them.

toggletoggle post by BSV at Mar 24,2011 12:35pm
StarGazer - A Great Work of Ages, was the first album I heard.

Arghoslent vox was slightly cleaner on the early albums. I can't say they're super tech wanky etc etc but there is a PROFOUND proficiency of technical grace that they execute just so goddamn elegantly, almost like a classical approach to the genre.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 12:36pm
Almost like if Iron Maiden had been a little nerdier about practicing their instruments. Especially in the drums department.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 12:41pm
Stargazer: So far I haven't listened, and i'm already impressed. What other band has related videos that include Tomas Haake and Accept?

Listening now.

YAY FOR BASSISTS! If cliff burton wasn't offed by Kirk Hammet in his sleep to cover up the anal rapage, he would be in Stargazer. This is clear. Reminds me of Intronaut's bassist, the way he will switch from playing something widdly and then start playing full chords on the bass.

Either I landed on an instrumental, or these guys have no singer?

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 12:42pm
Josh, I assume you meant these guys, right?

OOOH YEAH!

All this time, I thought with a name like Twisted Into Form they must sound like Forbidden.

I luv Martyr... and i hate their vocals. haha, but whatevs, everyone's taste are their own.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 1:19pm
So far I really dig:

Martyr
Stargazer
Twisted Into Form
Watchtower (how did I miss these guys?)
Confessor

well said. more interesting than most tech/death.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD  at Mar 24,2011 1:49pm
I thought it was only considered death metal if the vocals weren't clean, isn't melodic death metal with cleaner vocals considered melodic thrash? Damned imperfect subgenre titles.

p.s. its still pretty good though.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 24,2011 2:04pm
Spaldino - It mostly IS spiral architect. First singer, and like half the band are in here.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Mar 24,2011 4:18pm
I should be clear that Angalgard isn't really death metal. They're prog-rock but I thought you might dig it anyway.

Pete - not sure if this is what you're looking for. But this Gardenian album (Soulburner) has a combination of both Swedish Melodeth with Power Metal vocals. I really like this album.. it has some gems.

I missed this thread earlier. Considering you like the next town over, let me know if you wanted to chill, I could give you some recommendations.

I'm on the laptop. When I boot up the main computer to play drums in a bit I'll start checking this stuff out.

Right now I'm listening to Into Eternity - Buried in Oblivion. What a great album. However, I checked out a bunch of their other stuff and I do not like their other singers. Anyone know any other bands with this singer on it? (I think his name is Chris Krell)

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 28,2011 11:36am
Oh, and Aril - I am down with hanging out anytime.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 28,2011 11:39am
I don't think he did anything else, idk.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 28,2011 12:00pm
I know his brother was the bass player, It sucks if he never did anything else. He's got an incredible voice. The guy they have now is a total fag, which sucks because I was just informed he's replaced Matt Barlow in Iced Earth.

toggletoggle post by Woah!_Shut_It_Down!  at Mar 28,2011 12:12pm
If you're after Cynic-y stuff definitely go for Acid Death, namely Random's Manifest. It's got some cleans, not a terrible amount but it's something. !T.O.O.H! is good too, and their vocals are what someone described as a crazy man speaking Czech really really fast, so it's kinda sorta clean/shouted vocals.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 28,2011 12:51pm
What does TOOH stand for? Or is that the band's name?

I promise to check out all of these later, so please keep the suggestions coming.

So far, I'm really getting into:

Watchtower
Twisted Into Form
Into Eternity
Martyr
Stargazer
Confessor
Andromeda

The Obliteration Of Humanity. Not sure what's up with the exclamation points, but foreign bands can do this and look cute.
