Sadly I dont think developers ever stop coddling gamers like babies these days. I miss actually being challenged.

perhaps one of the most frustrating games I owned. got it in 87 as a birthday gift, and i realized i failed at life for the rest of my life because of this game:

bennyhillifier

Yeah its funny. Contra wasn't really that hard by comparrison. Fuckign Battletoads man....

Hey, want to talk about challenging NES games? How about A Boy And His Blob? The whole game is based on feeding jellybeans to this blob who is temporary transformed by them to accomplish different functions.

Has anyone in the history of humanity ever beaten that game?

It's fun and trippy as hell but unlike with the whole Sonic/Tails thing where Tails can die an infinite amount of times, if you completely lose the blob bouncing right behind you (picture a cross between Casper The Friendly Ghost and a smiling bowling pin), you die. Oh yeah, he can't fly either and there are tons of underground caves screen after screen deep. Enjoy.

Boy and his Blob was indeed hard. I beat it once as a kid. I have the gameboy one as well; it's even harder than the NES game, but different. Best thing about the game was the looping music throughout.

What about semi challenging but incredible two player games? My vote goes to Bubble Bobble.

that's why they give you the ketchup jelly bean!

the "catch up" jelly bean

contra with 2 players is pretty easy. Single is pretty rough. I bough A Boy and His Blob yesterday for 3 bucks.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD  at Sep 10,2010 8:57am
You have to throw them right into his mouth though or you miss and he gives you one of those sad faces.

Most impossible retro game ever...Ghouls and Ghosts/Ghosts and Goblins or any variation of that game they came out with. fucking rediculous...

river city ransom....only cause i dont know how to get into the high school.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Sep 10,2010 9:25am
Actually I always thought the original Metroid (lol @ iPhone auto spell changing metroid into "Negroid") was hard. Shit was long. I know people beat it... I never had the patience to beat the game until I was in highschool

toggletoggle post by boxxy at Sep 10,2010 9:33am
this is awesome, and i DID beat this when i was child.

Adventures of Lolo

toggletoggle post by sir coughsalot at Sep 10,2010 9:46am
ive got super contra and its fucking ridiculous

toggletoggle post by stench at Sep 10,2010 10:33am

so many people hated Zelda 2. fuck those people. only the house with the "I am Error" man is real.

toggletoggle post by stench at Sep 10,2010 10:42am
i didnt say i hated it. in fact quite the opposite. doesn't change that its just damn near impossible.
"bagu is my name. take my note to river man"

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Sep 10,2010 10:51am
Nah, was just stating a general statement towards the game back then. kind of the same sentiment with the people that hated Mario2. yea the games were different.. but they're still solid games.

toggletoggle post by stench at Sep 10,2010 10:52am
definitely agreed. also its a shame wart never made another appearance. they brought back shy guys and bob-ombs. you think they'd bring back a huge lizard with a distaste for vegetables..

toggletoggle post by eddnlie at Sep 10,2010 10:54am
I have beat contra and superC without ever being hit by anything. My childhood was after school street football, contra, eat, do hw,then sleep.

zelda 2 isn't that hard if you can figure out the trick to beating shadow link.

Hardest game i've come across is castlevania 2 is impossible without some sort of guide. When i was ten how the fuck was i supposed to know that you have to take dracula's heart and kneel at the end of screen for 3 seconds so that a tornado takes you away?

Another hard game is solstice. I think i beat it only once without the extra-lives cheat.

Skyshark

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Sep 10,2010 11:36am
also, how could we forget paperboy. game gradually got hard as it went on. fucking douchebag guys moving a glass window.. GET OUT OF THE FUCKING WAY

GUMSHOE

toggletoggle post by boxxy at Sep 10,2010 11:56am
right?! what kinda dick carries glass windows accross streets.... just park the van with the glass on the SAME SIDE OF THE ROAD that you're going. sheesh.

toggletoggle post by AndrewBastard at Sep 10,2010 11:57am
i love sky shark but it does get ridiculous in later levels..and zelda 2 kicks ass but i def used a walkthru to beat it. First ninja turtle is tuff to beat....my fav sports game: tecmo bowl.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Sep 10,2010 12:11pm
yea man. Ninja turtles. Fucking underwater level

toggletoggle post by stench at Sep 10,2010 12:17pm
electric seaweed. the first castlevania was equally ridiculous (though probably not as bad as the second.) fucking flying medusa heads..

toggletoggle post by boxxy at Sep 10,2010 12:44pm
Yea, Link was tuff to be sure... but i beat it.. i never beat zelda 1 though. i got to Gannon a bunch of times, but i never beat him.

Carnov was hard as hell to beat. So was Kid Icarus.

toggletoggle post by AndrewBastard at Sep 10,2010 12:52pm
karate kid was super hard...fuck the wind level.

toggletoggle post by boxxy at Sep 10,2010 12:55pm
holy crap i remember that, that was freakin impossible... i did NOT beat Karate Kid. Kung-Fu was hard on later levels too, although i did beat it.

toggletoggle post by IllinoisEnemaBradness at Sep 10,2010 1:12pm
holy shit, t and c surf designs, i had that. Karate Kid, i remember trying in vain to catch flies with those damn chopsticks!

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Sep 10,2010 2:28pm edited Sep 10,2010 2:29pm
there's 2 or 3 of them, right?

Made by Hal Laboratory - same people that made Kirby. In fact, you fight "Lolo" things in Kirbys Dreamland.
Another useless fact

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Sep 10,2010 2:34pm
Talk about easy games.

Any Kirby game. Fuck, I gave my Kirbys Pinball gameboy game to one of my exes. That game ruled hard. Must play..

toggletoggle post by Pires at Sep 10,2010 2:38pm
Yep. I know of at least 3.

They have Contra up at Funspot. I enjoy burning tokens and failing at this game about once a year.

toggletoggle post by boxxy at Sep 10,2010 4:48pm
OMG a real arcade Contra? That would make me go broke.

What I'd KILL to play again is the 6-player X-Men arcade.

I think so, it had excalibur too I think and a bunch of other sweet upgrades. Once you bought a couple of them you could kill most guys in like on hit.
