My guitar's neck is bowing slightly forward, causing some neck buzz and other issues that make me want to smash it. I'm a retard when it comes to this stuff, HALP PLZ.

tighten your truss rod. ;)

toggletoggle post by markworkingrichards at Apr 9,2010 2:58pm
I do not trust myself to touch the truss rod since I've never had to in the 13+ years I've owned guitars.

It's the easiest thing in the world to do. Tighten it a quarter turn, play for a few minutes and see if it feels better. Repeat until it feels the best.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Apr 9,2010 3:03pm
Oh and righty tighty, lefty loosey

toggletoggle post by timma at Apr 9,2010 3:18pm
Not that I'm any guitar guru or anything, but I'd say let it sit without playing for about 15-20 then pick up and play it. I find leaving the wood alone for a bit works best.

Delete your guitar's system32 folder.

toggletoggle post by markworkingrichards at Apr 9,2010 3:21pm
Wait, righty tighty lefty loosey? What kind of witchcraft is that shit?

I guess I'll try it out if it's that easy. Would doing anything to the bridge (fixed) contribute to solving (or hindering) this issue?

DO A BARREL ROLL

This only really matters when you're loosening the truss. You have to let the strings pull the wood into place. When tightening, it's not as big of a deal since you're trying to counteract the force of the strings.

Mark, don't worry about the bridge.

This seriously made me LOL like a retard at work. I was blind sided.

I think I've discussed this before... but I've never been able to figure out why a guitar maker is called a "luthier" when people who make drums don't have a fancy title. From this day forward, drum makers are now called "spagunklians".

toggletoggle post by markworkingrichards at Apr 9,2010 3:48pm
Mike, is that the original fancy drummaker name you came up with when we first discussed this like 3 years ago?

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Apr 9,2010 3:48pm
I don't remember :(

toggletoggle post by markworkingrichards at Apr 9,2010 3:50pm
GODDAMMIT MIKE

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Apr 9,2010 3:51pm
It was either spagunklians or jubbahexzackers.

toggletoggle post by markworkingrichards at Apr 9,2010 4:05pm
Spagunklians sounds better. It could have been a Zabnubber though.

toggletoggle post by madoakdevin nli at Apr 9,2010 4:48pm
Mark, you can trust almost anyone who sets up guitars regularly for this. I have Jay at Mr. Music. do all my shit.

toggletoggle post by madoakdevin nli at Apr 9,2010 4:53pm
My neck on my tele was bowing a bit and he fixed that up no problem. It felt stiff for about a month and has been fine ever since (and also). It might take a couple adjustments before it hits perfection since it's hard to predict what will happen. sometimes the neck will buckle for alittle while right after the 12th fret, but after a few weeks that will chill out a bit.

toggletoggle post by markworkingrichards at Apr 9,2010 5:18pm
Is Mr. Music that place near O'Brien's?

I'll be here all week.

Mark, yeah. The guitar dude there, Jay, is fucking awesome. He's been working on my guitars for the past three years or so. He's done neck adjustments, pick-up installs, installed new tuners (which required drilling), and a ton of other shit.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Apr 9,2010 6:56pm edited Apr 9,2010 7:04pm
I hope this guy does the truss-tightening for free (for Mark's sake - I know he actually wouldn't do it for free that'd be stupid) because it's really not something you can fuck up doing on your own unless you're an absolute idiot and decided to tighten (or loosen) it way too much.

toggletoggle post by markworkingrichards at Apr 9,2010 7:06pm
I'll just try adjusting the truss rod myself first, and if I don't succeed I'll hand the work off to someone else.

toggletoggle post by madoakdevin nli at Apr 9,2010 7:31pm
yeah just do a quarter turn and see where that gets you in a few days. I'm pretty comfortable with doing small adjustments myself at this point. I've been noticing I need to adjust it about 3 or 4 times a year. Pretty much at the change of every season to adjust to the humidity changes. I never really do anything more than a quarter turn and shit seems fine. I just seem to get an S curve at the first adjustment with my tele. It's my only set neck guitar and I think that is the main reason for this. My other guitars don't have that problem.
