New site? Maybe some day.
|
I got a huge new 27" iMac on my desk at work. I have to make computer lab images, manage xServe, and use it as a test monkey. I also intend on doing random unix stuff on it. That's all well and good. It's one big beautiful proprietary piece of shit, dual core Intel, 8GB DDR3, Radeon 4800, 1TB hard drive.
I KILLED THE "LAUNCHD" PROCESS (explorer.exe equivalent) and THERE'S NO WAY TO RELAUNCH IT WITHOUT RESTARTING THE COMPUTER.
In Windows I can always hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and start/kill any process no matter what state the OS is in. Not so with this thing.
THERE'S NO EJECT BUTTON ON THE CD DRIVE.
You have to eject it via software key commands and it takes forever to eject a CD.
IT'S ONE SELF-CONTAINED UNIT.
Can't open it and repair/replace/add a damn thing.
I CAN'T MAXIMIZE WINDOWS.
The fucking "plus" button on the top left of the window only makes the window bigger step-wise depending on the program. I want one button to command whatever program to take up the whole screen. Doesn't happen.
THE FILE EXPLORER GUI DOESN'T SHOW A TYPICAL UNIX FILE PATH.
So to figure out where I am in the file system I have to click on "Path" to get some icons that show what folder level I'm in, and try to guess the text equivalent of the folder path.
THE MOUSE.
It sucks.
THE KEYBOARD.
A full-size laptop profile keyboard. Why?
the Control key is in the same place as a PC but has an entirely different function. Then there's the Command key. Both words pretty much mean the same thing.
There's TWO DIFFERENT KEYS THAT SAY "DELETE" and THEY BOTH HAVE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS.
NO CHANGEABLE BIOS SETTINGS.
I have to enter in super-cryptic key combinations to change boot options.
GAMES.
There's like 5 games for this thing.
I could keep going all day. |
|
the new mac mouse is great |
|
you should have just listed what it does right. |
|
So, I suppose saying that unless you use MAC for music recording, video editing, digital art, etc , etc you're wasting your time with MAC would be superfluous, eh? |
|
ark, can't you get them in trouble for sexual orientation discrimination? |
|
ok, you could have got a full sized keyboard for free.
you could have got the other mouse too, but that sucks as well
you can add ram/ hard drive stuff easily
i do agree about the games. but blizzard and card games are all you will ever need right?
it's all about mame and emulators for me. |
|
also for games hook up a ps3 or xbox to your monitor via mini display shit is tight.
CMND+OPTION+CTRL+8 do it |
|
The new bluetooth mouse is indeed nice. It just doesn't have seperate buttons. I hate pressing the same button in a different place to hit a different button.
Messing with GarageBand is fun for a couple minutes. The photo/video programs are designed well. Photoshop is the same as Windows though. The benefit you get with the Mac is the amazing screen/color technology. The screen is the only good thing about it. But again, if the backlight dies, I have to send it away to get it fixed.
Really, there's no other way to say it, this is the flaming homosexual of computers. I don't hate it, it's just different, and I'd rather work with a PC.
This is what MA state taxes bought. I was talking to the CIO today and he said we could have gotten 300 new PCs or 60 new Macs. Since Macs switched to Intel the two platforms have converged, and apparently we can spontaneously support Macs with no extra training or raises in pay.
We're replacing the art and music labs with Macs. They have perfectly functioning dual-core PCs now though, with software that does the job extremely well as it is. To me there was absolutely no reason to make the switch, but the budget managers didn't listen, and here they are. |
|
if someone never used a mac before in there life it is a very hard switch, esp for someone like you, there are programs where you can run windows, or even install windows on the mac.
art and music labs having macs is cool, but everyone without training that's tough |
|
|

Unless I'm missing something this is literally 2 pieces of metal glued together. Don't see how to open it...and I really don't care to, haha.
That's true about the games. I guess Steam games will be supporting Mac soon so of course I'll be installing that. |
|

right, I do intend on dual booting/virtual with Windows, I've actually been using the terminal more than the fluffy GUI. |
|

Is that the tiny video port back there? I'll be trying that. |
|
|

I'm not sure that this statement is still valid. I use my PC for all music and recording needs (this is often) and I have zero problems with it. I believe this was a proliferated statement back when PC's had really terrible driver problems... (aka Plug and Pray) |
|
I found my reason for never owning a mac. |
|
Yeah, another thing about the mouse, it doesn't move at a constant speed. It accelerates according to how fast I move it. If I just want to move across a few pixels, I have to move the mouse slowly, and across a greater distance for it to hit the target. It's like the mouse has an old dirty trackball in it.
Seeing if there's an option to fix this. |
|
Oh man, fuck that! There has to be an option to disable that. |
|
there are 3 things on a mac that I want on the PC
spotlight
mutlitouch gesture laptop mouse
opeth |
|

No, macs got that from when schools got subsidized deals to bring mac costs down to 1.5x pc costs. They sold these deals so that education would eat it up. Thankfully with the PPC and memory channel's they had plus fw, it sort of made it ok cause the technology was better. Of course apple completely abandoned the Power PC chip set for the cheaper intel chips. completely removing any advantage they have. Oh well, atleast the playstation3 uses a PPC based chip and that is why it's so awesome. |
|
also, macs didn't have drive issues cause everything was approved/licensed by mac or it wouldnt' so anything. |
|
^ both true.
No option to fix this mouse acceleration thing. Not good at all.
And I have the mouse speed cranked to 100%, it's still dragging around.
The Windows 7 search is sort of like Spotlight I think. Or maybe Google Desktop is more like it. |
|
Grievance #124523: NO HEADPHONE JACK/AUDIO OUT.
Grievance #124524: NO VGA/DVI VIDEO OUT. |
|
google desktop and win7 is like spotlight is like saying that a shitty zune or shitty creative zen is almost like your 64GB ipod touch. |
|
touche.
One thing that is awesome - I can call up a stack trace of any process. |
|
in windows, you need msdn installed to do that. |
|
it does have an audio out. proprietary video out tho. |
|
linux is great. linux is free. you get the headache you pay for. |
|
I love how you made this thread but love your iPhone |
|
haha, I like it because I don't have to carry around a laptop, phone, GPS, mp3 player, alarm clock, internet, etc, and it's hackable so you're not locked to first party software. I don't like it because it sort of forces you to use itunes, spends too much power on rendering a nice GUI, and because of that the battery life suffers. I don't sit there and use it too much, but it does what I want.
The Mac desktop is a different issue coming from a PC. The disk imaging system is easy though, at least |

What?
get a mini display to dvi then a dvi-hdmi |

I say good sir, I do agree with your statements. In return for thread I give

^ fail
^^ yeah I found it. Still proprietary, still don't like it
Installed a bunch of software. Almost done messing with this for today. |
|
I hear it has a latte dispenser, that's got to count for something? |
|
My first computer was a first gen imac. Fuck em. I got a mac pro tower now (and a macbook). All-in-one's should be reserved for laptops and arcade machines. |
|
So far this morning I've managed to freeze this thing 4 times.
Adding a local user to the remote management list, the system locked up completely for 5 minutes, then it let me get to the activity monitor and kill that window. But then the activity monitor froze and so did Safari.
If I want to click on something near the icon tray, the words on the icon tray pop up in front of my mouse, and it won't let me click behind the word. |
|
I close programs but the process stays running. This happens with all types of browsers, without fail. I go to install a program and it tells me to close these other applications that are already closed.
The mouse acceleration is really pissing me off.
I'm glad I still have my real computer so I can get actual work done. This Mac is a toy. Glad I didn't miss anything by avoiding Macs the past 18 years. |
|
how the fuck is launchd the explorer equivalent? |
|
i was pretty sure launchd was a the replacement for xinetd |
|
launchd is the basically the window manager i guess, it combined a few older unix processes. all i know is when that process dies, i have no GUI, no way to start term, and no way to get functionality back. |
|
ALL the text on rttp is now appearing as lines ____________ in firefox. WTF did I press?
It's also losing sync with our domain every hour or so.
You have to buy Apple Remote Desktop. It's not included like it is with windows. But Microsoft remote desktop for mac is free, so I can remote to my windows machines. Another fail. |
|
This non-threatening black youth says you're doing it wrong. |
|
All non-threatening black youths are Scotty Pippen. |
|
If 2 people are using VNC for a remote session to our mac server, it loads up the same user session and we can both control the inputs at the same time. It doesn't create a seperate user session and allow session requests.
I know this is inherited from unix but that is just retarded.
Totally bumping this thread for myself now. |
|
Unless I'm missing something you can only TAB between text fields in a window. You can't TAB through check boxes or buttons. It's making you use the mouse for that. I hate this mouse. |
|
just because you close a browser doesn't mean its closed you have to make sure you quit it. |
|
haha..yeah...close and quit is different. One problem solved. I'm still not used to the all-inclusive menu at the top. |
|
|
THERE'S NO EJECT BUTTON ON THE CD DRIVE.
You have to eject it via software key commands and it takes forever to eject "Blackwater Park" so I can put in "My Arms, Your Hearse."

It has been brought to my attention that this person is not happy with my product. After reviewing such claims of discomfort, it has become quite apparent that he was a loser who was raised on Microsoft products. His way of thinking is one dimensional and quite frankly, his arguments amount to nothing. This person has a biased agenda of hate and shall stop using this product if it does not suit his "needs."
Here at Apple, we pride ourselves in our products. We receive many similar complaints a year and simply ignore them. These are the kind of people I hope stop using our products. These Microsiftians are corrupt, simple-minded, and quite frankly, unjust. They are idioticin every way, shape and form.
This "arktouros" character is too much of a pussy to send us his formal complaint so he posts them on a music message board, of all things. This is not the right way to go about such things.
We, Apple, condemn such behavior and will not be held accountable for any future violent actions arktouros does.
Sincerely,
Steve Jobs |

VMWare Fusion is the best thing that happened to Macs. Now that I have Windows 7 running inside OSX I can't complain anymore. |

You can buy mini display port to hdmi out adapters now. Don't know why apple in its infinite wisdom decided to go with this "industry standard" that only they seem to use instead of just putting hdmi on the damn things like everyone else is doing these days. Wait...yes I do, so they can charge you a fee for an adapter. |
|
Do not encourage him to use the tools of the devil. Steve Jobs will roast like a pig, tied over the fires of old silicon stuff with a mouth stuffed with a proverbial Apple. Tom Cruise will attempt to put out the fire but will be overtaken by the toxic fumes of his body modifications burning. Death to sinners. |

The next Macbooks are rumored to have HDMI out. |
