I love how all these self righteous zombies come together and pull so many resources to help the Haitians in there time of crisis, yet no one makes that big of a fuss when it comes to America's own people and problems. Act Local Think Global....Right?
Really, I think what urks me the most are these fucking commie celebs like George Clooney throwing there influence and money around for foreigners neglecting their fellow country men.
Hey George, why don't you create a telethon to raise support for the 3.5 million (including 1.4 million children) homeless in America!
.....Oh yea thats right, you hate Americans.

Despite all the bitterness I feel about this subject, I do however feel Haiti deserves some attention. Their situation is pretty dire and in need of immediate help. lets face it America's homeless problem isn't gonna go away that quick.....But, the reality is lots of Americans are neglected. You could be next! I just think the Media and the "Influential" should try and sensationalize "Americas problems" before those of every other country.
Also, something that has hit close to home with me recently is an influx of homeless veterans.....Yes, even right here in little ol' Northern NH.

Your Thoughts?

agreed, and no one seemed to give a shit that they were in pretty much the same position pre-earthquake. why is it that they felt the need to help only in the event of a natural disaster? their country has been a pit since day 1.

i 100% agree on the homeless veterans, these are men that were all fucked up in a war they probably didn't agree with but were doing their duty, and the same country that sent them to die is the same country that is shitting on everything they went to war over.

i think a lot of people feel the same way troll and yeti feel. i don't think haiti and other places should be ignored, but i think of homeless children in this country every time a disaster happens and awakens the celebrities' wallets. spread the charity around to everyone who needs it instead of throwing it at the cause of the day. you might get more attention and credit for helping the cause that's in the headlines at the moment, but it'll still make you feel good to help out the causes that don't get a lot of press.

Well and also --

Anytime we go into a foreign country, no matter how good our intentions, and make ourselves the New Boss, we're going to get blamed.

No matter how well we do.

No one likes being dominated or a dominator.

Let the rest of the world solve its own damn problems.

A good point, but you know full well that if a wealthy country like the US does nothing in a situation like this we're going to get blamed just as bad and most likely worse.
On that note, since when is blame avoidance such a decisive factor for you?

Conservationist is dead on, but sadly for this country, so is Slar...the US cannot win in the international court of public opinion

George Washington had it right in his Farewell Address, the US should've never poked their noses in foreign affairs from the get go, but future generations did not follow him, and now, while every country expects the US to save them and would jump all over this country if they stayed out of it, when we try to, everyone complains and ends up hating the country

You can't really expect much from people like me that barely make enough to make ends meet...Especially during a recession. I say If you have it give it, so the best I could do is give my time or maybe play a small benefit with my band.
The $ should come from the middle class on up (don't forget those generous celebs!). Those are the folks that can make a real impact.

Katrina was bad enough.

Blaming the government for the weather! haha

toggletoggle post by Troll at Feb 3,2010 10:15am
Americans have to stop the notion that "people shouldn't bitch" if there not doing anything to make an impact. It's absurd to think "poor" people (not necessarily homeless, but over 3 quarters of America's people) should be expected to just "do something about it". Easy said than done. Its hard to be an activist when your working 40+ hours a week trying to keep a roof over your familys heads and keep them clothed and fed.
So, ya. In my mind, most Americans have a right to complain cause the reality is, those who have money and influence spend it frivolously and don't have the heart to help others whereas the poor can relate to the plight of the homeless and would like to make an impact, but haven't the means.

toggletoggle post by uhhh at Feb 3,2010 10:29am
There are celebrities and programs that help homeless people in America, is it enough? Most likely not. Though the points about if we don't help other countries in need during a disaster makes us look bad are true.

Let's not forget one of the top factors why a lot of people are homeless: Substance abuse.

If you want to give money to someone who's just going to use it to feed their habit, go ahead, but I'm saving my $, thanks!

i'm broke, i wish i could donate to charities, but i'm just too broke. So i've been volunteering at a VA hospital helping disabled veterans with all sorts of stuff.

Because big foreign disasters are post-card crises, you attach your name to it because it's already big and famous.

Rich people aren't going to say, donate their money to the ice storm of 08 victims in NH because the media doesn't care about it, and even if they did...the media wouldn't cover it so we'd never hear about it.

Celebrities jump on this shit because it's a chance to be in the spot light.

Kevin smith said it best "Hell, I'd do anything to have my name in print"

I support this. Think locally, act locally.

Imagine this before/after:

1. Third world before aid
2. Aid
3. Third world after aid

1 = 3

:(

...but reality is worth accepting.

C'mon, thats a bit rhetoric. What are you straight edge? So what, they deserve to be homeless?
The general census is more than half of homeless Americans suffer from Mental Health problems, which in turn (yes) can lead to substance abuse. Substance and alcohol abuse is one of the great escapes for the homeless.

I think real problem is America doesn't know how handle the mentally ill. They use to just put them in mental health wards and let 'em rot....As long as there weren't on the streets muckin' up the scenery, right? Now they just dump them prisons.
