It can be used as social networking and it can be used to show off what you listen to. I just like to set personal records and see who my favorite band apparently is based on listens haha.
i've found out a ton of bands from all genres on last.fm that i would have never heard of otherwise. it provides statistical analysis of what i've been listening to at home and work computers for the last 2/3 years... it's very useful for being useless.
Winamp, iTunes, etc. all do the same thing but don't publically put it up for other people to read and say omgz I like taht band too!!!!!!11
Yes indeed but not if that info gets refreshed. That info, for me, has been refreshed like 5 times over the past 2 years because of switching HDDs, externals, updates etc.
This website is good for shows too and suggesting new music. and for pink strats.

Reading interviews, magazines, catalogues and buying an album on a whim from a band you've never heard before is way better. Just sayin'.

i fucking hate those robots trying to figure out what i would like based on what i listen to because they always get it soooo wrong.
my musical taste is far to eclectic to be pigeonholed dammit!!!
the compact disks at the top of the stack on my desk are as follows...
pavement- slanted and enchanted
poison idea - feel the darkness
thergothon - streams from the heavens
bl'ast - take the manic ride
smashing pumpkins - mellon collie and the infinite sadness (yes i am a homosexual)
david bowie - aladdin sane
thin lizzy jailbreak
omgz I heard Joey really likez new kids on the block lol I saw it on his lastfm hehe did you add him on facebook or get his digitz lol like his music is so good!! Oh my god like I haven't checked my myspace in forever I wonder if he added me on that!!! Omg like no way, he likes sugur rose!!!!! Like yeaaaa I love lurking on my friendz accounts and checking out bands like sugar rose!!!!!
Paradise Belongs to You was my favorite for the longest time, but over the past 2 years Veronika has slowly surpassed it. It also contains my favorite Saturnus song, "I Long". Amazing band and everything they've done is stellar IMO.

lol @ Lamp and MK Calling people whiny cunts when you two do it more than anyone else on this board. go whine about a pseudo grind show with too many "slam" bands about it.
I use last.fm because I think it's interesting. No, nobody NEEDS to keep track of what music they listen to, and I listen to music in the car or on my turntable that doesn't get scrobbled all the time. You whining about other people bitching on this board, that's some pot calling the kettle black shit right there if I ever heard it. I speak my mind when I see it fit and don't act like you don't do the same.
I guess there's a fine line between speaking your mind and whining. Personally I could give a rats ass what trends in music you all have. Whining? Maybe. Opinion? Definitely. Asshole? Sure. Chinatown? Let's meet.
I hardly post anything on this board anymore, you fuckstick.
SLIDE A FINGER UP YOUR ASS, BROOL STORY CO.
In all honestly, I'd like to see both yourself and Lamp post more.
We can all talk about how stupid last.fm is together
I have nothing to really post about. I'm merely an observer these days. Too many random threads about nothing and the bullshit is beginning to wear on me.
I had a Boston album in my car last week. Excellent bang with great guitar and vocal harmonies. But after about 3 songs, they all start sounding the same.

this is a serious question: why can't people let other people enjoy something without berating it just because they don't like it too? I never understood this practice of feeling the need of voicing a negative opinion about something in a thread that's clearly geared towards people would like something and/or find it useful.
and no, I AINT MAD BRO...just never understood why people seem to need to do that...live and let live, ya know?
post by FuckIsMySignature at Jan 18,2012 1:59pm edited Jan 18,2012 2:00pm
i thought berating others for their disagreeble beliefs was one of this site's virtues?
aril has a bully complex which he claims to not take seriously. It all stems from when we were kids and the ice cream truck never stopped for him. That's actually what caused him to start listening to black metal.

Because this site is a discussion forum and you can't have discussion without oppositinal views. And I could care the fuck less what anyone thinks of my "arilliusbm" alias so I constantly berate things and make threads about the pink elephants in the rooms that no one wants to talk about because they're all a bunch of pussies who are concerned about their self image within the local music scene or are too afraid to speak their mind online.
Does that answer it?
Long story short, being an asshole on rttp is fun. But if someone came up to me IRL and talked about last.fm I would laugh with them and buy them a beer.
post by ark at Jan 18,2012 2:08pm
Aril has a facebook his comments are invalid. I've said it like 50 times that lastfm is great FOR YOURSELF to track your listening habits. Ts owned by CBS. WHO CARES
Jim uses this "arilliusbm" character as if RTTP was an rpg. But these are real people with real feelings that you're hurting, man! Bully no more, go have your evil fun elsewhere!
post by RustyPS should be working at Jan 18,2012 2:16pm
It was just a question that's been on my mind for a while. No hatred for Jim, and I understand that 99.9% of what he posts is just for his personal enjoyment. My question wasn't even about Jim specifically, its just something I've never understood.
What I'm getting at specifically is....
Just as an example, say I make a "Deftones Appreciation Thread," there will definitely be posts saying how much the Deftones suck, and I think that makes no sense. Obviously, if you think the Deftones suck, an appreciation thread wasn't made for you. Now, if the thread was titled "What do you think of the Deftones," then commence with the bashing all you want.
Jim uses this "arilliusbm" character as if RTTP was an rpg. But these are real people with real feelings that you're hurting, man! Bully no more, go have your evil fun elsewhere!
Meh, I barely utilize it anymore but I've found a whole bevvy of great bands from last.fm including A Forest of Stars, Darkspace, Mirrorthrone and others. Fuck the social networking aspect of it; a lot of great bands post their material there and the access to info on bands I've found to be extremely convenient.
In terms of promotion, never really did much for OR, maybe I was doing it wrong.
In agreement with Rusty, I do admit I take it over the top sometimes and I've gotten worse over the years. I'm well aware of how annoying my negative comments are, but I'm waving my hands in the air like I just don't carrre
darkwor had some hits on last.fm, but you pay for forced promotion (airtime on recommended radios, etc) mostly for feedback purposes, i never pushed for actual money from it. burns-eye-view is right, i found a few good bands through it. um, now that i think about it, i haven't sat down and really listened to a good album in a while.
Yeah, no thanks. I always thought that the similar artists feature was enough. Though, going to the page now, besides Oranssi Pazuzu, all the similar artists are locals including In the Shit.

Yeah, no thanks. I always thought that the similar artists feature was enough. Though, going to the page now, besides Oranssi Pazuzu, all the similar artists are locals including In the Shit.
You pay $20 (IIRC) for 100 plays on band-specific radio stations where you pick the bands (ex: I did that for Crippling Fear and picked stations for bands like Weekend Nachos, Infest, Spazz, etc.) I thought that was pretty cool.
...and as far as the similar artists, I don't know this for sure, but I think they base it on how many people who listen to a given band listen to another band. What I mean by that is if Crippling Fear has 100 listeners, if 95 of those 100 listeners also listen to Infest, then Infest would be considered a similar artist.
I probably would've thrown $20 at doin' something like that. Oh well. I feel like the user base is down vastly.
That definitely makes sense given that our top "related artists" are locals from New England.
post by ark at Jan 18,2012 3:00pm
our related artists are bands with very few exposure from hungary and chile. It used to be better known bands like Thus Defiled and Aeternus (definitely not local)...no idea what happened.
