I really REAllY wish this stupid folk metal shit would die already. When it's done right, like bands similar to Moonsorrow or Falkencach, it's ok. These bands are just so fucking lame and childish. Ugh. At Ensiferum, I was probably one of the oldest people there, and I was 23 fucking years old then. The kids there were actually throwing trash at me because I was headbanging and enjoying some awesome music from a band who put out two amazing albums. |

Agreed. it's a horrible trend right now. I miss the old days when folk metal was folk metal, not cheesey jigs thrown in every 30 seconds with half harsh/clean vocals.
Of course most people disagree. to each their own.. But if you ask me, this is a trend that needs to die. |

That being said, I wouldn't 100% lump tyr into that mix. They've got a nice proggy feel to them, but the cheese is still tenfold. |

I definitely consider bands like Moonsorrow, Tyr, and Einherjer to be the better of the genre, though I appreciate it as a whole. There were a lot of shitty jigish bands at the Ragnarok festival last year, can't tolerate that. What's Varg like? |

but to be honest, most folk metal bands suck...but hey, if it influences that one awesome band that joins the trend I'm happy. and if it gets some kid going to the show to see swashbuckle into bands like drudkh and moonsorrow one day all the better. |

Labeling is such nonsense; but I think if at all possible, folk metal needs to be seperated into sub genres now. I've been listening to folk-related metal bands for quite sometime now and it makes me sick that this jig shit is taking over. I would blame fintroll for it. never liked that band one bit. When drunk, real folk is better. |

It's not that the jig bands are fake; it's just the direction folk metal has gone within the past 5 years. It's what sells records. I admit, I like some jig songs when I'm drinking, but it has zero emotion and feel. they technically are folk metal bands indeed; but European folk doesn't alway sound like a jig. Snowden, where you at?

there were two acts of douchebaggery: a chick drunk as shit who apparently was just more feisty than necessary in getting to the front and put this other girl in a headlock....to which a guy pulled her off and put her in line, saying something like "if you're going to be a cunt, gtfo"
and this asshole guy- not sure exactly what he did but it was extreme enough for the members of tyr to tell him he was out of line and everyone started clapping. he stopped.
then before korpiklaani i heard him ask the guy next to me if anyone near him was with him, and when he said no, the asshat said something like "okay good then i can push them all out of the way easily."
...okay so everyone wants to get to the front but that's just a douchebag mentality. destroy all in your way no matter what? maybe i'm just overreacting because i'm tired but that doesn't seem cool or right.
and then i had the luck of being right in front for korpiklaani RIGHT NEXT TO THAT FUCKING DRUNK CHICK with all the stupid piercings who clearly had no business being back on the floor. security was eyeing her thankfully because any wrong move and she was gone. i was amazed she didn't pass out. for being as intoxicated as she was she held her ground and kept nudging me more than i'd have expected.
after the show i saw her talking to security and it looked like she was about to cry because she was saying she couldn't find her boyfriend and didn't know where her car was parked.
i'm sorry, you don't fucking put someone in a headlock to get a better position.

from my vantage point, that "drunk" chick looked like she was more than drunk. She was fighting with herself and was crying in the pit before korpiklaani went on.
The guy that tyr yelled at pushed his way to the front. There was a wall of girls in the front and they freaked out when the guy did this. Then when tyr told him to step back, everyone clapped including the dude. |

This show was a disappointment.
The sound was horrible, I could barely hear Korpiklaani's accordion or violin player, except for a few choice instances.
Tyr was great, but the sound was off, and it sounded like there were all sorts of pinch harmonics where there definately shouldn't have been...I'd gladly see them or Swashbuckle again, but I'm really getting jaded by the whole "viking" metal bullshit. This fad needs to drop.
Also...if anyone went to Vader/Augury/The Amenta...the sound for that show wasn't perfect, but I seem to recall that The Amenta's samples sounded pretty much fine even when their guitarist was playing...
Maybe the night was just not a good night. I wish I saved my money for Arch Enemy/Arsis right now... |
