Interesting things going on in the north. I'm down with seceding, if countries as small as Portugal can run themselves I'm sure states as big as Maine and Vermont can. Maybe a New England as a nation movement?

"Naylor's secession call — an appeal for local control — went over well. "F--- America," said Will Neils, 32, a Green Party activist from Lincolnville, Me. "What have they done for us lately? Bush f---ed us, Clinton f---ed us. Let's cut the United States loose and let it drift downstream." Maine should stand up for Mainers, said Neils. In his view, the common enemy uniting Mainers, especially in the impoverished communities Neils grew up in, is government "run by and for the rich and on the backs of the poor." "I live beside conservatives," said Neils, "and there's no reason I can't find intense political ground with them. When we get together, we talk about community, how to take care of our people, feed our people. There's no place in that community for the likes of J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs."

Maine, NH and VT should become its own country. Fuck the rest. I would be proud.

How would this even happen, though?

I mean the US military would be all up in their shit once word got out. Manifest Destiny is a cruel bitch.

nah we really don't have any natural resources. and relatively speaking we'd be a poor country because all we have are a few crops, we'd be rich as individuals go with all the freedoms and saved money not lost on bureaucracy. Not to mention money would be useless, we could trade in gold and crops hahah. We just wouldn't have the money to fund a military, but hell I'm sure we could get quebec and newfoundland to join us, and I'm sure some European countries would be empathetic to our cause .

As far as being invaded goes, I think it would be a poor publicity move for Americans to attack Americans seeking independence, I mean New England isn't know for being a radical den of terrorism, they'd be hard pressed to find any reasons to attack us.

Get Massachusetts involved and you wont be half as poor of a country. Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire can produce crops and livestock, MA can produce weapons and technology. Pine Tree Flag FTW.

Plus, can you imagine anyone winning a fight in the Berkshires? Any invading force would get their ass whooped back into New York.

We'd just have to expel all the welfare babies first before MA could join, otherwise they'd be too easily cowed into revolting against the new Nation in exchange for eternal foodstamps and cable TV

Enjoy your barterfag hippie communes without federal highways or subsidized infrastructure from the USDA RD.

There's a reason heavily urbanized states pay more taxes per capita, rural America is heavily subsidized. That's welfare by another name.

Well I for one don't want the highways.

I'm all for localizing people in one spot and just getting to the other places the old fashioned way.

Highways are useless.

Oh noes that would be so terrible not to have the 2 highways in NH. What exactly do we get that is so amzing from the taxes of idiot city dwellers in other states that our own state property taxes do not fund?

Exactly, in fact, I bet we'd be better of without the Feds taking the taxes from VT, NH, and ME. I mean, we could do without half of the people the state employs anyways.

Let all the people who can't live without cable and star bucks leave and everyone else can live off the land.

How the hell did people in Canada live in the 1800s?
Not to mention, now we have medicine and understanding of simple science.

Through some wind turbines up on the monadnocks, green mountains, and along the coast of Maine and cape cod and we got our power issues solved.

We'll just to have something real to back the money with, none of this faith in the credit of America backing. Maybe on Granite prices haha, or if we find enough gold.

Centralize anyone who doesn't work or live on a farm so we don't waste time on a huge grid of roads and power lines and I'm sure we'd be set by ourselves as long. And if a bunch of guys in the middle east can fight off the worlds largest army, I'm sure a bunch of New Englanders with miles of forest and mountains and superior weapons can fight off an invasion.

I am a firm believer in States rights, therefore I suggest a sort of Confederacy mixed with a true Republic.

oh the irony of using your freedom of expression to decry the very country that gave you that freedom.

What country gave me my freedom? The Constitution and the continental congress did that, as well as some very honorable and virtuous men.

Everything since the civil war has been a slow tumble into accepted slavery.

You think I rebel against America, no, I rebel against the class of the wealthy who reap the work of the poor and working middle classes.

In fact, I strive to bring America back to it's roots, sans the immoral but at the time acceptable things there once was.

I'm talking about men being sovereign and not servants to the country. We are basically in an oligarchy were we are seen as servants whose duty it is to serve the will of "America" and protect her "interests" which are in fact only the America of the elite and the interests of the wealthy.

What I strive for is stronger self reliance, stronger local government where the sovereign individuals rule the land they live in not some oil tyrant thousands of miles away.

I oppose strong central government, useless wars, the entanglement with foreign nations in treaties.

I'm all for free trade with every nation but fully against strapping ourselves with other nations, treaty is what brought us into Europe's problems in the great wars, and special interests.

So I propose we ditch the old government and move to a more self reliant one where men and women are all equally free and have equal opportunity as sovereign individuals, not as we are now, half-slaves to an empire that is slowly spreading itself so thin it will collapse, as it is now.

that actually wasn't directed at you, it was directed at the quote in the first post. i completely agree with what you pointed out above, in fact i have thought a lot about moving out of this country to see just how much different it is somewhere else.

it's a pleasant daydream, but so totally outside of the realm of possibility that it's silly to really discuss it.

You are doubting the strength and might of my imaginary regime? How dare you?! It'll be just like Red Dawn, minus the dirty Cubans. Yeah.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Nov 16,2009 2:21pm
all right, i'll admit:
it's totally worth discussing imaginary red dawn scenarios... i'm serious, that would be almost as fun as a zombie apocalypse!

toggletoggle post by TheRidersofDoom  at Nov 16,2009 4:34pm
Yeah I think as a kid imagining Zombie apocalypses somehow pushed me into the realm of loving on the fringe/western style societies were men could be free of government intervention into their daily lives. Just to be free and live of the land in a way that's both laboring and rewarding.

I mean, are our grandkids gonna remember that we spent our lives living in some shitty apartment in somerville filing paper work at a cubicle, or would they better remember us as bad asses who lived off the land by the gun and sword!
