agreed, though it was kind of disappointing on Dead Again when he wrote that song "These Three Things" about the religious implications of abortion. however that song rules, so no need to worry about it.

At the end I'll escort you to hell
The dark one's forces
Lock your flaming cell
To murder the ones unborn
The worst sin you've ever performed
There are two other things I will tell
Know them well

With due respect
Hear these words of caution
If considering an abortion
If you dig boiling sulphur
To which I will not concur
Leading to a path of misfortune
No one won

Someone's "smarts" and their "Christianity" cannot, by fact, be ubiquitous terms, as Christianity as a doctrine and a historical movement is wholly inaccurate, being so far removed from anything remotely historically relevant, as well as actual first-century Christianity itself. Pauline Christianity, Coptic, Greek Orthodox, whatever, have not survived well enough to even be noted as Christian.

The core beliefs of Christianity still exist? I could name dozens of brilliant scholars on both sides of the table to argue that point.

I was not saying intelligence and Christianity go hand in hand, in either case, being a slight or a compliment.

Intelligence and someone's beliefs are separate entities, sorry to disappoint.

And just to be completely honest, aside from a rational discussion, I have no problem being an asshole to any Christian, ever. If you'd personally like to absolve hundreds of years of poor leadership, cultural destruction, and shoddy historical research, please do so. If not, don't judge, because growing up in America means growing up in a Christian society, and to be unhappy with the many mishaps and judgments I've had to deal with being a fervent anti-Christian, it is impossible to be wholly objective and clear.

Non-sequitur: I can find dozens of brilliant scholars on both sides of the table to argue for it.

The argument wasn't that beliefs define intelligence, but intelligence defines interpretation of dogma to result in beliefs.

If you find any useful philosophy department, you'll see that people recognize how the essential beliefs of religions differentiate them -- and that's why we can still talk about Christian thought, Jewish thought and Buddhist thought, for example.

toggletoggle post by Murph  at Nov 6,2009 10:20am
Well, to say that intelligence defines interpretation of dogma which results in a type of belief system is to say that you can tell someone's intelligence based on the refinement or complexity of their beliefs?

Pretty sure the core belief of Christianity at this point in time is Christ's divinity. At the time of the formation of Christianity, no one but Paul really tried to understand the myth in that way, nor wrote about it (unless we're talking about confused historical research, where most of the tales concern Attis, Adonis, Osiris, Dionisys...but are mistakenly attributed to revelations about Christ). In fact, depending on what present day Christian you ask, the divinity of Christ is still debated.

We could debate this forever, honestly.

Also, to make an even MORE concise point: No Christian attacked you. Here, or the other thread. Sorry that christianity's past examples of the same frailty ALL human kind historically shares offend you so greatly, but it still doesn't give you a free pass to persecute them. That, in fact, is the same thinking you seem to be so against.

For the record, I'm a satanist. I disagree with the christian code and roman catholic church as much as you do. I just don't feel the need to take pot-shots every time christianity is mentioned.

First off, you made a point using personal assumptions, ie. I know these people who are this way, so I can infer people are this way, therefore it matters. Guess what? It doesn't. I didn't say Christians cannot be smart people, just that it would be impossible to use one's "Christianity" as evidence of any kind of intelligence because it is so removed from an actual "Christian" creed, hence, NOT ACTUALLY CHRISTIAN (I guess one could give points for centuries of inventiveness...another argument, another time) which was arguing an OPINION presented by someone on this board (Conservationist). So, though it may have seem unprovoked, it was a challenge to a previous assertion.

Second off, congrats on being a Satanist.

Thirdly, I post on a messageboard, which is a sounding off board for ideas. I've made it obvious that I don't like Christianity. Why would I avoid voicing that feeling? Did I attack anyone personally (besides CTB, awhile back...who I have no problem with, and I think is mutual)? I live in a Christian society, and have fun arguing that in any way. I'm not intolerant, as I've yet to commit any crime against any person of an Abrahamic faith...my parents are Christians. I'm just someone who doesn't agree, historically, politically, socially...sorry.

And thanks for the scolding life lesson, of me identifying my asshole-isms and trying to work on them in the future. I'm glad as you're getting older and wiser you're really identifying cases such as me and making a positive effort to re-efface my attitudes and behaviors.

This is as usual my fault.

Let's try this take on it:

Christianity is words in a Bible. A huge Bible. One that is meant to be approached from any angle and lead to roughly the same area.

However, beyond that -- all bets are off.

Let's switch from Christianity to Nietzsche. Also words, of a more recent vintage. Equally misunderstood.

To dumb people, Nietzsche is a license to steal, fuck, cheat, lie and screw over other people. (Ayn Rand, you stupid fuck, I'm thinking of you here.)

To smarter people, Nietzsche is more complex -- not appropriate to go into here, but for sake of argument, let's take that at face value.

A dumb person will fuck up Christianity and Nietzsche the same way.

A smart person will arrive at alarmingly similar conclusions.

Let's take a concept -- "equality."

To a smart person, this means meritocracy. We all start out the same, we do the same work, those who do good rise.

To a stupid person, equality means subsidies for all of those who consummately fuck up, at the expense of those who don't.

Hope this example helped. Apologies for the gratuitous use of the word fuck.

The problematic issues with Christianity here are varied and unique. For example, a two-fold issue with such BELIEFS are that...one, Baptist Christianity is true (in a historical sense, initial) Christianity, and the second, that Jesus was an Egyptian mystic embroiled in a dogmatic feud with Jewish and non-Jewish Messianic sects and leaders (including our friend that Baptist, so marginalized by biblical texts). Hence, historical accuracy has as much of a claim to curb a progression of accepted history as the opposite has an argument against a possible regression of ideals and cultural norms (what is "true" and "actual" might not work nor be relevant in today's world).

Nietzsche is a dissimilar case because his role in history, while undetermined fully, is able to be coherently argued based upon the volume of work true to his nature (ie, his own work, printed "true" or "willing" to his taste).

My view against using that particular faith (Christianity) in a dichotomous argument is that misunderstandings of history can undermine anyone using a mythos to create a moral/belief set.

LUCKILY, moral traditions between cultural and spiritual codes at the time of the formation of both Christianity and Judaism have allowed for a synthesis between dogmatic creedence and accepted social cues/behaviors (meaning the religions carry tons of well-wrought, intelligent ideals in various forms, which most societies still praise). Islam, while not my forte, is decidedly more exclusive as its preservation deals with cultural forces still prevalent today.

Hope that clears up my asshole-isms.

C.R.E.A.M $$ y'all.

By the way, as much as we bicker like a couple of old cunts, our politics aren't that far off.

Beers' to yo, bud.

That list does nothing to make the case for Christian bands.
