Has anyone heard this band yet? They're fucking incredible, I've been jamming out to them like crazy lately. If you haven't heard of them I recommend just downloading the album.

One of the better up-and-coming tech bands from the east coast.

Someone made a thread about trying out for them a few weeks ago.

I tried listening to them again since that thread and I feel like for every really cool part there's two or three parts of trying-to-be-tasteful-but-failing tech nonsense.

finally got around to listening to this band, and I'm liking it. Abasi used to be in Reflux. I can definitely hear Reflux riffs in this. Good score.

he has two good songs. behaving badly and tempting time are excellent. rest is meh.

Obviously haven't heard Inamorta. That song's totally tits.

everything else in this genre sucks. except those two songs and because they don't have vocals. if they had vocals i would not even bother listening.

Can't get into these guys, and y'all know this is definitely my style. The guitarist irks the shit outta me. Shirts and ties in a metal band, 8 string guitar, everything he does just seems like one big unjustified GIMMICK.

I agree with the earlier post - Blotted Science (or even Canvas Solaris' new album) is way better than this band.

And since someone brought up Bulb, the periphery album fucking SUCKS. Who knew that it just takes one faggot vocalist to ruin an otherwise amazing batch of songs? Oh, well I guess Pillory knew that when they hired me.

I think this band is great, although the TECH style without vocals just feels like it's missing some of the energy and anger i like in my metal.

i havent heard enough music to really defend this band in any way. i'll have to pick up a cd and make a judgement after listening to it. theres really only a couple bands/musicians that i like for this style.

I put the Exivious album into heavy rotation. There's a LOT of great guitar playing on there, but no matter how many times I keep listening to it I still get the impression of background music. The songwriting is just not as potent as Cynic, yet because it sounds so similar it's obviously going to keep getting compared to them.

You really need to ask that? How many other metal musicians dress that way? Is he unique, and free spirited, or is he trying to stand out. If it's the latter, it's a gimmick.

We disagree, and that's fine, but you're not going to invalidate my opinion of the band and I clearly did not judge them on appearances as you are trying to imply. I heard the band and album long before I ever saw the guy, and as I already stated found the 9 strings unnecessary and gimmicky.

As I wrote, those are examples of why the guitarist IRKS ME. Not why I dislike the band. Two separate thoughts. Paul Masvidal IRKS me as well, with his tight surfer shirts and faggy yoga ways, yet Cynic is currently my favorite band. See?

i know i have the cd, don't like the rest of the "chuggy math look what i can do songs" coherency is key.

I don't see how 8 string guitars are gimmicky, or what a dude decides to wear on stage is gimmicky, but that's just me (let's not all get butthurt by this now).

With that said, they're gonna be in Boston with Circa Survive on my birthday. Definitely going.

i think that all this stuff is a resurgence of what it was like to play shred before that manner of songwriting got dated sounding. these dudes obviously play really really well and they definitely know their audience. they are educated musicians writing music for educated musicians in hopes that if people can figure out what they're doing that they'll get "respect" or "cred" from people who give a shit about guitar playing. unfortunately, most non musicians don't give a shit about guitar playing.
i like the way these guys do it, but i'm probably biased because i usually like this whole progressive "djent" metal genre and i give a shit about guitar playing. it's obviously not everyones cup of tea and you definitely can't see a dude wearing a shirt and tie when you're listening to the record and vacuuming the living room. great for driving too. you kinda loose yourself in all the twists and turns. maybe it's not so great for driving.

yea. it's cool to hear em play with "real" drums. though i'm sure the drums are just as cut up and corrected as the guitars. all their old stuff was all done with no bass and a drum machine and it sounded a little more lo fi. i think i hear bass in there a little bit.
i'm pretty sure they're still doing everything on their own but it sounds really polished now. these guys should get tom jenkinson from squarepusher to play bass for them. that would be such a ridiculous collaboration.
