probably not. they're a tad expensive and hard to play.

figured I'd ask..

Expensive, probably... hard to play? Not any harder than it is to play guitar or bass or trumpet or piano. It just involves different techniques.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 22,2009 11:17am
it's a skill that would require practice - and the fact that most people don't have them makes it a little challenging. it should come somewhat natural to some bass players though.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 22,2009 11:19am
It's would assume it's kinda like playing an upright bass but you can only tap! ONLY TAP!

someone go to berklee and snag a chapman stick.
but beware of the egosharks there, they'll bite your head off with fancy musical rhetoric and make sure you know they're better than you at music

That band Laundry used a stick. Gave it a fucked bassy sound I have yet to hear in extreme music. It almost sounds like a bass and piano mix.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 22,2009 11:45am
i think the sound would suit some types of metal, it's just a rare instrument and even more rare to find someone that knows how to play it well.

toggletoggle post by C.DeaD at Sep 22,2009 11:47am
I think it would suit a band or bands like Ved Buens Ende/Virus very well.

Agreed 100%. Pretty much the reason why I made this thread. Been on a Ved Buens Ende kick lately

Everyone should be on a VBE kick.

toggletoggle post by MikeOv at Sep 22,2009 11:57am
Sean Malone used one on Cynic's Focus.
Jim, did you ever get Coiled in Wings; the live VBE bootleg?

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 22,2009 11:59am
Indeed he did. I also like the Gordian Knot stuff with the stick a lot. In fact, everything I've heard with the stick (Tony Levin, etc.) I've liked.

Nope, I never got a chance of listening to that. I'm curious, though.

There used to be this band called M3 that played in Harvard Square all the time. Their bassist James Mobius would play Stick on some stuff. This track in particular is pretty cool:
