I love Richard Seymour more than I love some family members. But let's face the facts.
There was no way, NO WAY the Pats were going to be able to keep both Seymour and Vince Wilfork. If you have to choose between the two you've got to consider that A. Richard Seymour has been hurt a lot over the past few years, B. an elite nose tackle like Vince Wilfork is a tough commodity to find. If the Albert Haynesworth situation proved anything you either draft one, or you pay a goddamn fortune for one in free agency. C. With the Pats using a lot of base 4-3 this season Seymour would have been better suited as a tackle, and they're relatively stacked at that position right now.
This still kind of sucks, but a first rounder from Oakland always runs the risk of being a top 10. I don't see them beating anyone in the AFC west. They just cut Jeff Garcia, and Jamarcus Russell is never going to develop. Which in turn means that Darius Heyward Bey is never going to develop, which in turn means they've wasted 2 top 10 draft picks in 3 years (McFadden won't be a bust). On draft day in 2011 when we draft the next Jerod Mayo we'll feel a lot better about it. |
i figured it was a move to free up money for wilfork, but it still sucks to see "seymour, dick" leave town. |
WOW, did not see this coming and yet I can understand some angles of it.
1. This settles the Wilfork or Seymour debate on who to sign. With Seymour done and the capspace that frees up, Vince is gonna be the guy they make a new contract for.
2. Seymour is getting older, granted he's only gonna be 30. They must smell decline on him and figure they either got someone else they can trust with his position or someone else in their sights to trade for.
3. At least with trading him to Oakland, they send him to a team that can't hurt them and pretty much SUCKS while being run by one of the worst organizations in the NFL. If they keep sucking, in two years that could be a high first round pick. Use it or trade it, the Pats can turn that pick into something good in the long run.
I'll be the first to admit this looks like a risky move, but the Pats never do something like this rashly. There has to be a plan behind it. |
they'll find a way to trade this first rounder for some team's second and fourth rounders in next year's draft. |
don't forget that Mankins is up after this year too....and the chances they were going to keep Wilfork, Mankins, AND Seymour were none
this moves frees up a lot of cap space to resign both if they get a CBA done by next year....if not, that changes evverything |
plus, if this team is stacked at any defensive position, its the line
Green will probably start in Seymour's absence, which he's always deserved...plus Wright has been very good and this gives Brace and Pryor (who's looked great this preseason) the chance to start developing earlier, which is a good thing |
You make a good point, Mike.
But all signs point to the 3-4 defense, unless a major move is made within the next week. Not sure how I feel about that. |
Glad to get that stuck up prick outta here |
I'm a little bummed but you guys are right, keeping Wilfork is essential. With how well the Pats draft, I don't doubt we'll find a gem in the first round. |

How so? They keep bringing in 4-3 guys, and they've played 4-3 through like 75% of the preseason.
The only thing I've heard today that scares me is Detroit dealing O'Connell to the Jets. Thanks a fucking ton. |
Oconnell will give the jets D some of the pats offensive tricks, but they could play like the 85 bears defense and still lose because of dirty sanchez and that terrible offense. Sanchez is a bust in the making. |
gettin traded to oakland blows for seymour |
Yeah, I feel bad for him. Going from arguably the best-run organization in sports to the worst has to blow. |
this is a pretty good move, xmikex pretty much nailed it. im not worried about the pass rush this year either with adalius coming back and burgess |
i haven't heard anything new... but last i heard he refused to show up in oakland... haha... someone's a sad panda. |
I'm a little concerned about the Seymour thing right now. He still hasn't shown up in Oakland, and seemingly has no intention of it. Word on the street is that Oakland is going to want their pick back if he doesn't show up. The official rules put the situation in kind of a gray area. Common sense tells you that once the Raiders signed off on it, it's their problem to get Seymour to show up. But some sources are saying the Raiders might have a case. If that's true, and Seymour comes back to New England he's going to be pissed all over again.
And what the fuck is up with Greg Lewis getting cut. He looked great in camp, and in the preseason. Hopefully this means at least that Brandon Tate is close to being ready to play. I also hope that Terrence Nunn gets signed to the practice squad, and gets another shot at the roster eventually. |
p.s. Boo Urns week 1 picks coming up before noon today. |
There's got to be some sort of bad blood between someone in the Pat's office and Seymour. Something's fishy with the situation |
All that money and...WOOF? |
from what I've heard, Seymour wants a new contract from Oakland....WHY? |
ever seen Wilfork's wife?
Yeah they're millionares.... but they're also 310, and 325 lbs respectively. They needz sum big bitche$ |
Matt Cassel's wife looks like she'd be the backup to Carson Palmers wife though. Do not want. |
BIANCA WILFORK |
If the NFC West was any less interesting they'd rename it the WNBA.
couldn't have said it better myself.
i agree with most of your picks on the blog. |
here's what I don't get about the Seymour situation....
reportedly, the Raiders have the right to inform Seymour that he has 5 days to report to the team, or he's considered out for the year (meaning his contract does NOT expire after this season like it should), the Raiders get their draft pick back while still retaining their rights to Seymour, and the Pats get squadoosh...if that's true then if he's looking for an extension from Oakland like the media is saying, how does he have any leverage by holding out at all?
this leads me to believe that he's either really dumb and doesn't know/understand the rules or he's destroying his career to just get back at the Pats for trading him...I don't see how him not reporting makes any sense |

He's represented by the same guy who's handing the Michael Crabtree debacle down the street in SF. Who fucking knows. |

I was gonna say, that whole thing sounds very unfair towards the Pats. I really wonder if we'd have to give back the draft pick if Seymour decides to deep six this entire year for himself. Either way, the Raiders still own his ass, he'd lose a year he wouldn't get paid for and still be a year away from free agency.

Well, that explains a lot. Moreso, if the report about the agent bullshiting Seymour about working on a new contract with the Pats is true. At least Crabtree figured out that he'd be a retard to not play. |
