New site? Maybe some day.
Does this movie look fuckin sweet or what? |
Sleeper hit in the making. |
I want to see it, but I think it's going to be one of those movies I just watch so I can see what the aliens look like. |
I'm slightly interested in seeing it, but I fear it will suck. |
looks like it has potential
MSD, they show the alien in the newest ad...looks like a huge bug |
yeah the aliens are bug like and have chtulhu faces |
I stole one of the posters for this movie at the theater last night. |
I thought they were machines. |
m'eh
"Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable - he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9. " |
sounds over-complicated. i'll keep an eye on it though |
I love anything alien-related, but 30 years ago? come on. |
I want to see this too. Let us know it is Jim. |

alright will do..
Also I should say that imdbs rating suck, but real movie critics are saying it's realy good. That's always a plus for sci fi movies. Peter Jackson produced this, interested in checking it out |
Seeing this tonight. I won't remember it because I'm far from sober. |
Might see this tonight. If not this weekend sometime. |
It was a good movie. Definitely different than I thought. Was a unique movie but I'm not blown away by it.. Bloody with political undertones |
yeah i haven't seen it but i definitely smell immigration/apartheid undertones from a mile away |
saw this movie last night! thought it was great, much different then i assumed def a well done movie, they paid attention to every detail with this whole crazy story they came up with. id say its worth checking out |
I have heard a lot of good things. Cant wait to see this. |
the bloody parts of the movie were awesome. definitely like a 1st person shooter game. the alien guns made people explode.. haha |
This movie was bleak and intense. |
easily best movie of the summer, best of the sci-fi/action genre in the past 5 years. great story, action that doesn't seem out of place, action scenes that don't seem forced to make up for a terrible story/plot(looking at you T4/transformers 2).
A+ |
Saw this movie last night, easily my favorite science fiction movie since Gattaca. It brings the genre back to its roots while creating a modern story. |
I'll admit; im slightly disappointed with this movie |
It looked better when I saw the first trailer. But it still looks cool. |
It's his racial apologist movie for having zero Africans or Hispanics in Lord of the Rings: Whitey Versus Arabs, Suspiciously Negroid Orcs and Quasi-Khazarian Trolls |
I'm not disappointed because I'm not looking at it as sci/fi, but as a dystopian film. |
Originally this was supposed to be the Halo film. I know Peter Jackson was the Executive Producer for the Halo movie concept. I read somewhere that they scrapped Halo for some reason, but they had already spent a shit ton of money so they decided to turn it into District 9.
Kinda badass. Although I want a Halo movie. Whatever. |
This movie is way, way too PC for me. And it seems very linear past the opening gambit. And it's a rehash of "Alien Nation." Otherwise, it's great.

Agreed. I don't think it was a true sci-fi flick. It was more political/allegorical than anything. It was a good flick, but definitely does not deserve the huge praise it's getting! I'd give it a B or a B+. The main actor, considering it was his first movie, was excellent. Other than that, too many plot holes and not enough substance and/or background to be a true sci-fi flick. |
The way the government conducted secret experiments on the aliens, and assassinated the character of the MNU eviction coordinator (one of their own) didn't seem very PC to me. From an American standpoint, we're duped into believing that OUR government is righteous and only has our best interest at hand. I think this film briefly depicted that many governments are anything but benevolent.
Side note: Was it just me or did anyone else think that the special op's soldier had an uncanny resemblance to post-prison Jon Nodtveidt? |

I am SO glad there is no Halo film. I just saw this and it was fucking great. Loved it.

I thought the same thing, and plan on playing that when I get back home. |

Considering the residential area it takes its inspiration from was called District 6? |
Fuck all video game movies.. |
Except Doom. |
And Kid Niki: The Motion Pictue |
i'm at the part in halflife 2 when you go to ravenholm. Never really liked HL2 that much in comparison to HL1. I got HL1 the day it came out and still play that game |
i just got free movie tix from my work for my bday...do believe i will use them for this |
this movie had a half-life 2 vibe to it |
that's the exact same thing a co-worker said. |
This movie had a BBC documentary on sub-Saharan slums and the unfair treatment of the people feel to it |
Seeing this tonight with the lady. |
ooooh, blue's got a lady now
Orange would be more fitting since it's the complementary color to blue. Sorry, I just had an art fag moment. |

Correct sir. In fact, I was thinking the same thing when I typed that. hahaha |
I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Now I'm starting to wonder if Blue is more of a complementary or analogous guy, IFYANOWUTIMEAN. |
You hear abuot that person who was hit by the train at south station today? |
Hah, nope. I'm on a "road day" today but I'll be in South Station in a few minutes. I'm sure I'll get details. |
Get it? The alien's name was "Christopher"... "Christ"... he's the savior of the alien people, no one is sure if his return will mean salvation for the aliens or punishment for mankind... Get it? Eh? Eh? |
This movie wasn't nearly as good as people hyped it up to be. It was good, just not great. |

"I'm not scared anymore"...
...
.......
thanks for that... |
i like this movie. very entertaining |
Saw it over the weekend - I enjoyed it, though many of the above crits have a point. |
It was an enjoyable watch but that doesn't make it a hood movie. It had so many flaws and the whole political massage should have been used for other genres, not sci fi. |
you're over analyzing it jim. its just a movie. |
the political massage makes it a hood movie. |
I only like politcal massages that come with happy endings. |
It's a shoddy attempt at trying to combine a PC message with something hip and cool like aliens.
Abovetopsecrets alien forum was sponsered by district 9 for a month last month as they were taking input for a sequel. It was perfect for trolling.
The things that were good:
acting (main character), action
thing that were bad: the plot and numerous holes involved.
It wasn't deep, it wasn't engrossing, and it wasn't the best sci fi flick of 2009. I enjoye pandorum way more than this movie and pandorum wasn't even that good.
D9 is what it is though, and it's something I'd watch again even though it angers me. |
do you take all movies so personally? |
Alien is what a science fiction/thriller should strive to be. Logans Run. Total Recall (story). Star Trek, Star Wars (not really sci fi but close enough). Hell, even cheesy ones like 5th Element.
I thunk they wanted to take sci fi into a new direction, which I somewhat liked, but at the same time didn't because of the videogame esque feel and lackluster storyline.
Moar movies like alien plz |
This movie was fucking depressing. |
Indeed it is, as are many more titles. |

He means it's a "space opera". Like, get it right, man. |
Bumping this thread makes Aril mad. |
HEY GUIS IS DIS THE AVATAR APPRECIATION THREAD? |
I watched this a couple weeks back.
"Meh" at best. |
it was decent. I think if I had see this when I was 13, my mind would have melted. |
Wait so space gasoline can also alter a human's DNA transforming him into a completely different species? How bizarre and convenient to a hackneyed plot! |
