I liked it at first, but then I kinda got bored of it. A bit too long.
I can kinda see where someone might think Saliva, but it sounds like AIC to me. Then again, AIC's sound has been copied by so many bands it's understandable.
the general consensus is that this sounds like aic. that might because the majority of the original members wrote it. actually i'm willing to bet Jerry wrote the whole song.
what i meant by it sounds like saliva is that it sounds like any second-rate post grunge band. for AIC, this is pretty much a crappy ripoff of themselves

i think its an attempt to both pay homage to layne and to continue writting/playing music together as a band because thats what they love to do. good intentions dont always result in equally good music however. you really cant blame them for giving them a shot though.

as a huge fan of old AIC, i just can't see how anybody could think making new 90's grunge would sound good today. AIC/Mad Season, Nirvana, etc... it's all been done...and it keeps being redone every fucking day on the "alternative radio circuit"
i had the displeasure of listening to 20 minutes of WAAF earlier today, heard a TERRIBLE godsmack song that was "new" - rehashed 90's rock, dumbed down, watered down, rehashed again. Then the rest of what they played were songs i've heard a billion times (Nirvana's Bowie cover, Smashing Pumpkins...you know, songs from the 90's)
eh, i feel like when youve made music that good, youd know when something sounds bad enough to not release it. but then again ive never been in a super influential band, and theyre probably under contract for another album or something like that
All due respect, but have you actually listened to AIC?
one of my all time favorite bands. I think most think this sounds like aic. there not going to be the same band they were in 92.
with a different vocalist it wont have that same mood to it.

yeah, to me this song fits that description perfectly
song is a disappointment.
BUT, with this "sound" they have now, I'm still curious to know what the album will sound like. pretty heavy guitar tone with this. vocals are good, but it's nothing like the AiC of old.
song is lacking some of the emotion of older AiC it seems. but I still have faith in Jerry as a musician to make some good songs.

Wasn't trying to be a dick at all. I'm a huge AIC fan (hence my forum handle). Staley is, IMO, one of the best rock singers of our time.
The fact that I love this band so much, is why I hate this new song. It's overproduced beyond belief. I didn't listen expecting to hear the same band they were in 92, but I did expect music with some integrity, and not the same old bullshit that gets played on all of today's modern rock hit stations.
It just doesn't seem sincere at all. They always had the ability to sort of reinvent themselves, while still keeping the core elements that made them such an awesome band, but this is just fake to me. A marketing ploy, or what have you.
When bands like this continue and replace such essential members, I have to question their motives. Is it really to continue making good music, or to pad their retirement funds a little more?
In addition... I would respect it a hell of a lot more if they just continued as a 3 piece, rather than hiring this fucking hack to take the place of a genious. The dude has a decent enough voice, but it's far from unique, and it certainly doesn't add anything interesting to their sound.
Don't even get me started on the recording.... yuck.
BUT, who knows... maybe this is just the dark horse (no pun intended) of the album. I'll certainly give it a [likely brief] chance when it is released.

didnt take it as being a dick. I agree song is overproduced. I really want this album to be good. .

Song is ok, sounds like a b-side from a Cantrell record. Into it, although I hope the album as a whole is more impressive.
AIC has always been one of my all time favorites, so I will always at least respect anything they or Jerry Cantrel do. I think this song is pretty good, and I'm definitely willing to check out the whole album when it's out. No Layne, but I still approve.
If I hadn't of known this was Alice In Chains, I would think it was some shitty radio rock band trying to rip-off AIC. Terribly overproduced and the vocalist sounds like a combination of the guy from Saliva, Filter and Creed.
I stand by what I said before, and add the fact that layne was my all time favorite singer, so this is definitely different to me, but I wanna see if this guy can sing "Rooster" or "I Stay Away" or songs like that and actually pull it off before I give him full judgement.

Don't forget .. Jerry also did a lot of the vocals as well. He wasn't the main vocalist like Layne, but don't discredit him and his effort with the new stuff. The new guy can obviously sing (he's no Layne) but JERRY is still in the band.
Edit: Let's hope they can pull off the vocal harmonies that he did with Layne.
It sounds like they are. The layered vocals kinda sound like Layne. I can already tell just by this single that they're gonna try and make it sound like him as much as possible so fans will take them seriously again. I dunno, I'm just bitter they're continuing on with AIC when they should have ended it when Layne died and started a new project.

i know what you mean man but its worth it just because they will tour behind it. they cant just keep touring behind greatest hits cds forever. and wether or not you think they are now just a cover band... i would pay that much to see a cover band play the songs as well as they do live.
Jerry wrote the overwhelming majority of the music and lyrics, and by the end was doing nearly as much vocals as Layne; so in my opinion it's still AIC. And they shouldn't be forced to quit because Layne fucked up
I like it. I'm taking it for what it is, not what it should be. It just is. It'll never be that old AIC. It's very dark and heavy. Agreed the song is waaaaay too long and if this is the radio single then I can guarantee you they'll cut a shit ton out of it and make it at most 4:30.
