What do you guys think of the peavey XXX, Ive been thinking about buying one, Ive owned a marshall jcm 2000 tsl and honestly I hate marshall equip. right now Im playing on a trace elliot GRP3, honestly the most versatile amp Ive ever owned, but the calling is here and Im craving new gear again, I know peavey has been labeled a shitty company; for amplifiers I think they really are, so whats all these bands I see playing XXX' now. To me it seems as though the XXX is the same as a mesa dual rectifier tri channel, Ive played both for a good amount of time to compare. Whats the overall opinion???

one of my guitar players has a xxl and it sounds real good. makes lots of kids jealous. the xxx is the next step up and from what i have heard they sound great, way better than the xxl.

yeah I played on an xxl at a friends house, I was suprised, The dampening switch rules-tight, loose, moderate or something like that. It also had a wattage switch 25-50-100, thats pretty rad, its just that the amp had insane feedback, almost unbearable, wasnt my guitar either, perhaps the cable, but other than that how can you beat an amplifier that nice with that tone for 400, anyone remember the old supremes?, I played one of those for a few years until I came across my piece of marshall head, lets face it marshalls gain blows, I never even bothered trying different tubes, Im just sick of paying for the name of an amp/ guitar, theres not that big of a difference between and eppiphone and a gibson, besides pickups and the higher end qaulity of eppiphone is nicer than low end quality gibson shit, take it form me I owned a gibson les paul double cutaway, dont get me wrong great guitar, but my eppiphone custom quiltop has a nicer edge and a better shaped neck

i've got a peavey ultra plus, which is the earlier model. i think the only difference is you got a third channel for your solo channel. with mine i basically can only hit the verb. i've been thinkin about gettin the xxx. it's just a question of $$.

the DSL is better than the TSL.

don't bash marshall unless you've tried the dsl

i like the TSL a lot, never played on the DSL. I'm not a big fAn of the XXX either, even though, from wut i've heARd, that was aCtuAlly A design thaT George Lynch gave to Peavey for an aMp.

i use an XXX. it definitely has crazy feedback. also, the clean channel never gets totally clean, but it comes stocked with 6L6's. i'm sure replacing them with EL34's would fix both problems. i love it though. it sounds so raw and mean, i wouldn't play through anything else for this band. it's supposed to be comparable to a rec, but i don't think it really comes close. the mesa's that i've played all were much smoother and the peavey was designed to have more gain. you get what you pay for i guess, the peavey is around a grand brand new, the mesa is $2500. anyway. my only real complaint is with the clean channel, i think it needs compression or something, but the amp is a great deal for the money. my favorite thing about it is the switchable effects loop, so you're not tap dancing to get the right sounds at the right times. you can turn on whatever pedals you want when it's convenient, then hit the effects button on the footswitch when you need them.
and yeah i agree about peavey amps in general, i think they blow. i'm suprised at how much i love this one.

I noticed one of the guitarist from blood has been shed plays a peavey ultra, I wish I could find one to demo, So now all those questions what about the 51/50 EVH, the tone on those is nice... played a 2x12 combo today just assuming it would sound even better mounted on a 4x12..

one other thing i need to note, the xxx has a shitty face plate, it screams nu metal, who the fuck wants an amp with those imprints on it, its not going to make it sound any better, I hate how peavey goes for looks now as well, have you seen those new ultras with the tribal designs on them HAH!

peaveys suck. marshall is ok, at best. hell, even mesa isnt as good now as it used to be. get a vht. thats what i would get.

peaveys absolutely DO NOT suck, they're a different sound. 5150 has the most gain on any of those amps for that kind of $. Spending $2000 on a mesa is a waste of money.

i agree with that. i took the plate off...it's just black plywood underneath and i stenciled the name of my band on it. anyway, we have one of the older ultras hanging around; we use it as a spare. i like it almost as much as the XXX. they're basically the same thing anyway, but i think the ultra is 100 watts and the XXX i know is 120.

might look into an ultra then they go cheaper than the xxx, I was leaning more toward the 5150 evh but then realized the trip x has three channels

Anyhow Im not really looking to replace my trace, I love that head, Im more or less looking for something different... tax returns are here and new gear seems like a good possibility.
