I have a Yamaha DTXpress...I only trigger the kicks and it sounds great through the PA but when in the studio the double bass seems to lack compared to a single bass hit. Is there anyway to make it so ALL hits are the same volume instead of having really strong single kicks and slightly softer double bass??? Theres so many nooks and crannys in that goddamn thing you gotta be Johnny 5 to figure it out!

RTFM. other brains have settings for this (vcurve on alesis I think).

toggletoggle post by neverpurified  at May 25,2009 11:49pm
It's kinda like auto-tune, but for the drums

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at May 26,2009 12:36am
yes there is, but you're not gonna like my answer. You have to play evenly. That's all there is to it. The reason that it sounds like the DB is missing something is because it is, consistency. That's why most people think triggering is cheating, because they think you can hit as hard/soft as you want and have it all sound the same. You still have to play evenly for it to sound good. I would recommend doing double bass patterns slowly (40-50bpm) w/metronome for an hour a day, and increase the bpm by 10 every week. Focus on the consistency of the hits, and in a couple months your footwork will sound deathmetaliffic!

Hahaha leave it to jim to totally go on a tangent totally not answering the question.

Don't know what the paramater is called on the yamaha modlues, but as mikey said its called 'v-curve' on alesis stuff.

toggletoggle post by JN at May 26,2009 10:18am
Set MVel to 127 and VelCurve to "Loud 2"

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at May 26,2009 10:50am
I get credit for answering the question first.

RTFM FTW

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at May 26,2009 11:39am
actually that's NOT what velocity curve does, at least not on Alesis models. So YES i DID answer the question. The V-curve parameter is to make the difference between strokes smaller, but no matter how high you turn it up, you can still hear inconsistencies. So yeah, practice more, spend less time looking for a shortcut, because that's what your asking about.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at May 26,2009 11:42am
At least on all the models i have used, if you don't hit perfectly evenly (fast or slow) than you can hear the difference. The DB will always be weaker if your not hitting it as hard. I'm not saying you need to pound the hell outta all your DB, just that you can find a good volume to play consistently through all parts at.

toggletoggle post by blue  at May 26,2009 11:56am
Jim, he didn't ask for a drum lesson on how to play evenly, he just wantz his kixxxx to sound sewper brutal.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at May 26,2009 12:00pm
yes, and there is no setting that makes all the hits totally even. Sorry.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at May 26,2009 12:02pm
i take that back, he can buy a real shitty trigger with only one sensitivity. It'll probably sound worse though.

I was meaning I answered first with the RTFM comment

i <3

toggletoggle post by wraitheon at May 31,2009 1:31am
JN is correct. The Mvel (minimum velocity) is the setting to determine how the trigger responds to a hit. whether your a rhino or a mouse all hits come out the same. apparently mine was turned all the way down .thanks for the help everyone.

thanks for the help. you are right and everyone else is wrong.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at May 31,2009 2:13am
hmm..... no dynamics...

I believe i was right as well.

toggletoggle post by wraitheon at Jun 5,2009 12:22pm
yes you where im sorry. Playing extreme metal you need zero dynamics on the kicks. obviously i wouldnt recommend it for any other style.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jun 5,2009 1:25pm
really^^?! You think you need zero dynamics for extreme metal?

??!?

Dude, if you don't compress the dynamics out of 'em (your kicks), the soundman is gonna do it for you. I understand the point you've been trying to make here for the last few weeks in this thread, but I'd have to disagree with you. He's not trying to remove dynamics, he's trying to get an even response from his trigger. You can still drive a multisampled kick with whatever velocity curve you want and get some very varied and dynamic sounds. However, if your trigger thinks your 5 is a 1, and your 6 is a 10, your dynamics are gonna sound like crap.

We get your point, you work hard on your kick technique. We appreciate that, and love your tunes. Now leave the other drummer alone.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 6,2009 8:47pm
Fair enough. Sorry.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 6,2009 9:20pm
sorry for being a dickhead to someone trying to ask an honest question that is. But no sir, you don't get my point. Maybe I don't know how to use mine (DM5) but when i first got it i tried to set it so there was no variation in the volume to see how it felt, and i couldn't do it. It always was quieter while doing lighter faster stuff. So that's were i was coming from. And while it's wonderful that you appreciate the music we make, it's kind of a bummer that people assume i'm just trying to bost about my drumming whenever the subject of drumming comes up at all.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jun 6,2009 9:27pm
Not saying you were boasting, I was trying to throw you a compliment on your technique.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jun 6,2009 9:31pm
as for you alesis, you want to set your v-curve setting to off or constant to get no variation between hits. The other settings function just as you described a while ago.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 6,2009 9:39pm
ha, i'm missing everything today.. thank you... I'm real tired. Thanks for the tip for the DM5, it's good to know how your equipment works... which by the way, when i first got the DM5 i was frustrated for weeks because i couldn't make it work how i wanted it to. Usually i'm decent with learning new equipment, but that thing kicked my ass.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 6,2009 9:39pm
where you been?

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jun 6,2009 9:50pm
I disappeared and did some MAJOR woodshedding and accumulating gear. You should see my living room:

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jun 6,2009 9:56pm
I'd be down for that but that PRS is like a $99 agile knockoff. Sounds killer! lol

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 6,2009 9:59pm
