Call it a pet peeve but why do horrible bands decide to hijack names already taken by established acts? Is there absolutely no more creativity in the world?

From Lambgoat: "Reflections Records to release Worship 12""
Apparently this is some "hardcore band" from California?

Perhaps they haven't realized there was a little known Doom band from Germany by the same name. What's even more fantastic? They ruled!

That other band "Unholy" on prosthetic ripped off their name from one of the most criminally underrated bands in history, and now everyone will assume they are the true Unholy.

Same thing happened to Incubus!

Lastly, there is The Esoteric. Obviously they are unfamiliar with the legendary ESOTERIC from the UK. Putting "The" in front of your name doesn't change a thing.

I just find it unfortunate that lesser bands who steal names from quality artists usually end up being more well known than the band who's name they stole it from.

metal-archives.com is hilarious for that.

well...all that said. This band rips off Cursed. But I'm fine with it.

I think you answered your own question......

....either that or they just never heard of the other band and didn't do the research

Just letting you know "The Esoteric" existed before "Esoteric.

1) I refuse to believe that.

2) That means they're gay. I could maybe see it if the bands who's names they stole were god awful, but that's not the case.

The Esoteric that is on deathwish formed in 1996, and ESOTERIC from the UK formed in 1992.

...Just letting you know.

There was also a black metal band from Greece called Worship.

that's completely subjective....bands you love they might hate...doesn't really mean anything because they should just try using another name either way at the very least to avoid confusion and/or a lawsuit

toggletoggle post by MikeofdecrepitudE at May 7,2009 10:55am
deathwish or prosthetic, whatever label The Esoteric was/is on.

toggletoggle post by boblovesmusic   at May 7,2009 10:59am
There's also a Mexican death metal band called Esoteric that formed one year after the British Esoteric.

toggletoggle post by MikeofdecrepitudE at May 7,2009 10:59am
Yeah but Rusty, that's like some poseur not liking Black Sabbath, so they're going to use that name in spite of them. Doesn't work that way.

And maybe your initial point is right, which is why I hardly check out new bands.

Cenotaph (MX) was alright at best, Disgorge (MX) sucks etc. Mexicans should really stick to what they know: Border jumping and making burritos.

oh sorry your right I thought "esoteric" formed just shortly after "the esoteric" in 97.

I can see bands(not signed to a large label/ect.) having the same name though anytime before mp3.com/myspace/ect. It's easy now to check to see if a band already exists with a certain name.

There was a Swedish death metal band by the name of Unholy and an American heavy metal band called Unholy but they changed their name.

Currently there's also a Brazilian black metal band called Unholy.

that's different because Black Sabbath is huge...that'd be like a pop rock band calling themselves U2

...but maybe they think "no one's heard of these guys, but we like the name, so we're gonna use it anyways"...that is very likely

...like before you brought up Unholy in this thread, I had no idea there was another band named Unholy...same with Worship...but if I wanted to name my band Unholy or Worship, I'd look it up first

toggletoggle post by MikeofdecrepitudE at May 7,2009 11:12am edited May 7,2009 11:13am
All other Unholy's that have been mentioned do not pre-date Unholy from Finland. Basically my point is this: A band like Unholy (Fin) are legendary and influential, and should be more appreciated, that's all. I mean, they were on Avantgarde Records, and anyone into Death/Black Metal should be familiar with that label & their bands.

unholy is a stupid name for a band. it's so generic that of course a billion bands are going to use the name.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at May 7,2009 11:15am
I was pretty pumped when nothing of relevance seemed to exist for Mast.

It's hard to find memorable simple names that aren't already covered.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at May 7,2009 11:20am
true, brian. maybe that's why we see novels masquerading as band names (success will write apocalypse blah blah blah, iwrestledafagonce, etc.).

There's a band called Matellica from Italy apparently.

question about "The Esoteric"=
In 2000 I went to the NJ Meltdown and saw "The Esoteric". (i think, but maybe it was just "Esoteric") and they gave em a demo cd with 6 tracks. It was hand numbered 185 of 500, and it was fucking sick. Real fast, real tight, and really depressing sounding. I loved it, then i bought a record from what i thought was the same band, and it was some metalcore crap. I have trouble believing that it was the same band... anyone have any insight into this?

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at May 7,2009 11:52am
do they write thrashy songs about hot wheels and barbie's dream house?

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at May 7,2009 11:52am

Know any tracks off the demo you got? Could have been the earlier The Esoteric stuff.

I liked With The Sureness Of Sleepwalking

the two eps were more raw sounding.

obviously there are exceptions...there are plenty of bands I love that use those words in their names....it's just become so cliche to do so

In the case of incubus though, you really can't expect an indie rock band to scour through metal band names and make sure they are the first.. especially since they were pretty much established before the mainstream internet.

There's some kids in Ottawa calling their gay band Anodyne

toggletoggle post by Samantha at May 7,2009 6:04pm
Horrible bands aren't creative or talented enough to write decent music, so why should they be original when thinking of a band name?

toggletoggle post by goatcatalyst   at May 7,2009 11:29pm
There was some French metal band called Capharnaum in the early 80s and some British psychedelic band called Ipsissimus in the late 60s.

But(t) fuck those faggots.

No, I agree, but fuck the false Incubus, they went from MTV wiggercore to radio rock. I wouldn't expect a collective of faggots to know who the real Incubus was, so it's blatantly obvious that they have no appreciation for music that's any sort of merit. I'm pretty sure they filed a lawsuit against them as well. This world needs a new black death and swine flu just isn't cutting it.

worth any sort of merit, rather.
