No one likes black metal. It's anti-liberal, and not as simple as "MOAR TITS OR GTFO."

i don't think either of these things classifies him as a reliable source of information on the subject...growing up listening to Burzum in your Xenia, Ohio bedroom means nothing

toggletoggle post by Conservationist  at Apr 27,2009 8:29am
I think they're celebrating him for promoting metal with "Gummo."

Academia is numb on black and death metal because they're not thoroughly liberalized genres. Then again, they even fail it on crustcore. Where to find experts?

I mean, other than Hessians.

Interesting review:

Something draws all of us to metal, and no one has asked yet what it is -- until now. Two brave indie filmmakers set out to learn about the phenomenon of Norwegian black metal from the early 1990s, and explain to us why it happened. In doing so, they hope to show us our world in a new light: how modernity has made culture, history and even truth dubious and lost in a flow in chaotic information.

"Until the Light Takes Us" review

About time someone put metal on the big screen and tried to explain it.

now that i've seen it i don't think it completely sucked, but it wasn't very good. way too incoherent, way too much time spent on pretentious douchebags who have nothing to do with the history. like Harmony Korine. what the fuck does he have to do with anything? that artist Bjarne Melgaard was lame too, his art sucks. overall this was meh, the highlight was when Frost started going nuts at the art show. also the best interview wasn't even in the film, the one with Ivar Bjornson.

the DVD has a second disc of all of the cut interviews. full ones with Garm, Ivar Bjornson and Dirge Rep, Abbath and Demonaz, Varg, Fenriz, Frost, and a few others. it also has one of the gayest things i have ever seen, a section called "Black Metal University" with Fenriz. it's a 45 minute interview where he explains how to be or do black metal properly. i made it about 5 minutes in and wanted to gouge my eyes out.

toggletoggle post by largefreakatzero at Nov 18,2010 7:38am
I finally watched this last night. Overall, it annoyed me. I got tired of hearing how wonderful and ingenious these guys thought they were, and how everyone else were posers, and waaaah black metal is ruined. Shut up, write some music, burn some churches, kill some fellow metal guys, or gtfo.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Aug 7,2012 8:12am
Just saw this for the first time. Awful. Pitiful filmmaking, horrible interviews. No real substance other than rehashing Varg's story and following Fagriz around.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Aug 7,2012 8:25am
i stand by my previous judgment. it isn't awful, but it isn't spectacular either. i just watched it again the other day, i get the biggest kick out of Varg lying. he lies so blatantly that you can tell even he believes it. plus the part where he says "they found Dead dead in the bed" makes me laugh.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Aug 7,2012 9:38am
the best part about it is playtime with fenriz. i thought it was a well-put together film that ultimately parodies itself. some good interviews and footage mixed with a lot of blackmetal self-service.
