There is no dark side of things. What the fuck does that mean, "Darkside of things"??? Oh, okay you obsess with what people call the down side or the unpleasant side. Well fuck that man, I am into blackmetal and I will tell you something. There is no such thing as a dark side of things. That doesn't make sense. Your chaos magic philosophy is bogus. In fact magic itself is a miss used word. Your obsession with Nietszche is bogus. Everyone constantly miss quotes him and takes things he wrote way out of context. I am cool with you guys wanting to go against the grain and believe it or not I actually like your music, but come on. You and everyone else that has been interviewed in a mag always answer the questions as predictable as possible and you all say the same old shit. Nietszche this and that and everything is dark sided and blah blah blah. Most people never even open a Nietszche book yet everyone quotes him. When I was interviewed in a german underground zine I answered with truth and avoided all the lies. Okay Nietszche was a product of the 1800s his opinion is not relevant to current situations. Hes interesting to read, but his opinion was for his own as you say, "ZEITGEIST". Grow up. I wish all the black metaller would just grow up. I am a hugh fucking fan of blackmetal but everytime I see something like this I instantly say, "what the fuck are they doing, man". Talk about ruining something. Your chaos magic isonly ruining you not the universe, because guess what? you are still working, still eting, still breathing, and guess what???You are still a part of this system you claim to loathe. You do not loathe this system because you are too comfortable to change it or make changes. If you were what you say like everyone else you would, really do something drastic to make a change, not claim to be ruining life as we know it and still getting up every morning and going to work. Take my advice. like I said I like your music but if you really wanted to make an impact you would not have given and interview like the above. keep on making music and stop giving credit to Nietzsche, haha. Give the credit to yourself for having brought out this music you create. Dont get mad at this post either, use it as a tool to think clearly about a better interview approach for next time.

Seriously? This reads like a joke.

If its not then I am speechless at CNV's immaturity-augmented mental retardation.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion. Day is to night and night is to day. So there is a dark side to things on a figurative and metaphysical level. If you choose to percieve it some other way it does not mean your acessment is necessarily correct.

Who are you to tell me my interest in philosophy is bogus? Sounds pretty arrogant if you ask me. That's right, I forgot you did a interview with a german zine. We should all bow down now. Perhaps you'd care to enlighten us with your name and the zine?

Chaos magic is a form of magic which was first formulated in West Yorkshire, England, in the 1970s.[1] Through a variety of techniques often reminiscent of Western ceremonial magic or neoshamanism, many practitioners believe they can change both their subjective experience and objective reality, though some chaos magicians dispute that magic occurs through paranormal means.

Although there are a few techniques unique to chaos magic (such as some forms of sigil magic), chaos magic is often highly individualistic and borrows liberally from other belief systems, due to chaos magic having a central belief that belief is a tool. Some common sources of inspiration include such diverse areas as science fiction, scientific theories, ceremonial magic, shamanism, Eastern philosophy, world religions, and individual experimentation. Despite tremendous individual variation, chaos magicians often work with chaotic and humorous paradigms, such as the worship of Hundun from Taoism or Eris from Discordianism.

[edit] History
Artist and mystic Austin Osman Spare was briefly a member of Aleister Crowley's A∴A∴ but later broke with them to work independently.[2] Much of his theory and practice would eventually form chaos magic. Specifically, Spare developed the use of sigils and the use of gnosis to empower these. Most basic sigil work recapitulates Spare's technique, including the construction of a phrase detailing the magical intent, the elimination of duplicate letters, and the artistic recombination of the remaining letters to form the sigil. Although Spare died before chaos magic emerged, many consider him to be the father of chaos magic because of his repudiation of traditional magical systems in favor of a technique based on gnosis.

Following Spare's death, magicians continue to experiment outside of traditional magical orders. In addition to Spare's work, this experimentation was the result of many factors, including the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s, the wide publication of information on magic by magicians such as Aleister Crowley and Israel Regardie, the influence of Discordianism and Robert Anton Wilson, and the popularizing of magic by Wicca.

A meeting between Peter J. Carroll and Ray Sherwin in Deptford in 1976 has been claimed as the birthplace of chaos magic, [3] and in 1978 Carroll and Sherwin founded the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT),[1] a chaos magic organization. Liber Null (1978) by Peter J. Carroll further developed this new, experimental perspective on magic, now known as chaos magic. This book and Carroll's Psychonaut (1981) remain important sources. However, chaos magic in general is among the least organized branches of magic.

[edit] Terms and practices within chaos magic

[edit] The gnostic state
A concept introduced by Carroll is the gnostic state, also referred to as gnosis. This is defined as a special state of consciousness that in his magic theory is what is necessary for working most forms of magic.[4] This is a departure from older concepts which described energies, spirits or symbolic acts as the source of magical powers. The concept has an ancestor in the Buddhist concept of Samadhi, made popular in western occultism by Aleister Crowley and further explored by Austin Osman Spare.[citations needed]

The gnostic state is achieved when a person's mind is focused on only one point, thought, or goal and all other thoughts are thrust out. Users of chaos magic each develop their own ways of reaching this state. All such methods hinge on the belief that a simple thought or direction experienced during the gnostic state and then forgotten quickly afterwards is sent to the subconscious, rather than the conscious mind, where it can be enacted through means unknown to the conscious mind.[citations needed]

[edit] Magical paradigm shifting
One feature of chaos magic is the concept of the magical paradigm shift. Borrowing a term from philosopher Thomas Samuel Kuhn, Carroll made the technique of arbitrarily changing one's world view (or paradigm) of magic, a major concept of chaos magic.[4] An example of a magical paradigm shift is doing a Lovecraftian rite, followed by using a technique from an Edred Thorsson book in the following ritual. These two magical paradigms are very different, but while the individual is using one, he believes in it fully to the extent of ignoring all other (often contradictory) ones. The shifting of magical paradigms has since found its way into the magical work of practitioners of many other magical traditions, but chaos magic remains the field where it is most developed. Changing belief systems at will is also sometimes practiced by followers of Discordianism.

One of the most frequently cited tenets of Chaos magic is that "Nothing is True and Everything is Permitted", a quote attributed to Hassan-i Sabbah and used by Friedrich Nietzsche in his work Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Like Crowley's "'Do what thou wilt' shall be the whole of the law", this phrase is often mistakenly interpreted in its most literal sense to mean that objective reality does not exist and therefore that free will is unlimited. However, "Nothing is True and Everything is Permitted" is more widely interpreted to mean "there is no such thing as an objective truth outside of our perception; therefore, all things are true and possible".

The idea is that belief is a tool that can be applied at will rather than unconsciously.[5][6] Some chaos magicians think that trying unusual and often bizarre beliefs is in itself an experience worth having and consider flexibility of belief a form of power or freedom in a cybernetic sense of the word. Other chaos magicians suggest no "belief" is needed to work magic.[7]

look i dont need a lesson in what some losers decided to define as chaos magic. It is a play on words and a play on things noone can actually measure. Not to mention there is no proof of such things that happen on a so called metaphysical level. you superstitions are bogus just like skinner would say. So go read skinner not nietzsche. Playing with ghost and goblins is just like being a Christian, muslin, jew etc... I am not arrogant as I have my own opinion which is not to fall into a black metal copy cat image. You can talk up and down about this "metaphysical" bullshit philosophy but the whole premise of it all is based on the fact that we cant measure it. So until we actually can measure it and know we are not being fooled but other factors it is just bullshit. Science which is another word for your "magic" and is based solely on empirical evidence. Do you have any empirical evidence for your chaos magic and meta-whatever? Everything eventually becomes visible to the eye and in some cases mind, but this metaphysical force you are talking about and you people continue to talk about is nonexistent. That is why you can play with those concepts and make it look like you know something deep or some esoteric discovery now until doomsday because your ideas cant possibly be presented in any form whatsoever. Why, because they are ideas only and do not exist outside of your mind. I mean what is truth even??? Magic magic magic magic oh and magick...What books have you to back your opinion up? Or what evidence should I say because books hold nothing more than words....?Right???

Hahaha, well science and magick are intertwined in my opinion. Like the guy that took acid and concieved the DNA strand. One could view that as a sort of "occult" communion.

and metaphysics is very scientific term dipshit...

Look buddy, you can percieve it however you want. Your limp wristed arguement behind an anonymous screen name definately does reek of bullshit and does not change my opinion. Fortunately for me things are going in the direction I anticipated.

Uh, believe it or not but if you play Metal, especially in New England, you're in a scene. You are not original. I think everything that can be explored with BM has already been done so. BM bands are more concerned about alienating people than making fans of your music.

Also, Neitzsche's and Crowley's ideas have been done to death. Nothing new there either.

Cold Northern Vengeance Interview
Seabrook, New Hampshire’s Cold Northern Vengeance capture all that is strange and spellbinding about the New England region. Buried within their complicated, atmospheric sound is the repression of the Puritans, the fear of the Witch Hunts, and the supernatural horror of Lovecraft. Driven forward by masterminds Heathen and Gemini, the phantasmal eeriness of this band is what separates them from their contemporaries. The three of us corresponded via e-mail about region, religion, and rock in the band’s newest effort, 2008’s Domination and Servitude.

Mark Hensch of Thrashpit.com: First of all, thanks are in order for taking time out from your schedule to answer my questions. I find your latest album fascinating, so I appreciate it.

Name:Heathen: Thank you for the support. I too find the album fascinating...

Thrashpit: Take me back to the beginning. Where did the roots of Cold Northern Vengeance take hold and how did it grow into what it is today?

Name: Heathen: Ahhhhh, let's see here. It started in November of 2002. The weather up here was completely frigid and miserable at the time. Gemini and I met through our mutual friend Chris Maclean (Martyrvore). We were into a lot of the same stuff. The atmospheric black metal and the dark side of things. I said let's start a mysterious cultist black metal band in the vein of the Scandinavian bands with some other touches. We got drunk out of our heads, ran out to the ocean in a raging blizzard and that was very inspirational for me. CNV was born that night. The rest is history...

Thrashpit: How did you settle upon the name Cold Northern Vengeance?

Name: Heathen: Haha well, the band was concieved during a snow storm under the influence of lots of alcohol. The cold brutal weather coupled with misanthropy, the devil, occultism, depression, booze, chaos, madness, rebellion and on and on...There you have it. CNV sounds like a fitting name to me.

Thrashpit: This is the first time in a while I am truly at a loss in describing one band’s particular sound. How would you describe yourselves to some one who has never heard you before? Is black and/or death metal enough?

Name: Heathen: That's a tough one. I'm not exactly sure. Nietzsche had a quote that said one must have chaos inside himself in order to give birth to a star. Something like that. The By Paths to Chaos. Songs that channel the Dionysian force. That mystical and hypnotic force. That's what we're all about. Can you pin point and completely define chaos? Neither can I. CNV is art and I believe that true art knows no bounds. People will try to pigeon hole it, it gives them this petty sense of comfort.

Thrashpit: The latest album is entitled Domination and Servitude. What significance does the name hold for you?

Name: The slave and master concept. Looking at the world in that sort of perspective. I believe that the people in positions of power have intentionally subjugated art. They know it makes people think, makes them question... That's the last thing these people want. They want to be comfortable in their ivory towers looking down at the mass of assembly line drones. How did things go from The Doors to Nickleback? What went wrong along the way? They are aware that true art has the potential to cause dissent so they orchestrate ways to subjugate it. Replace it with "consumer" music. A real 1984 scenario appears to be taking form. Big Brother is watching. The slaves shall serve...

Thrashpit: Domination and Servitude is chaotic – none of the songs sound alike and first-time listeners will have quite a few surprises awaiting them. What kinds of bands and artists influenced you guys, producing the unique sound heard today?

Name:

Heathen: There has been so many bands and artists that have inspired me over the years. I listen to a lot of different genres: Black/Death metal, neo folk, ambient, classic heavy metal, industrial, punk, outlaw country, Oi!, Experimental, classical, electronic, Acid rock and on and on... You can definitely here a lot of those influences in Domination and Servitude. CNV will continue on that sort of path on the back roads of New Hampshire. Total mind fuck, total paradox...CNV Dungeon Cult 93

Thrashpit: Listening to Domination and Servitude, I seemingly catch several nods towards modern, post-Enlightenment philosophy. Lyrically speaking, I am often reminded of Friedrich Nietzsche. As for the title, it reminds me of the Master-Slave Paradox written about by Georg Hegel. Is this intentional, and if so, how have these thinkers influenced you? Is there anyone else besides them I am missing?

Name:Heathen

Ok, what I believe that I am doing is a sort of figurative necromancy. Breathing life into a lot of ideas that are all too often swept under the rug. Blood Axis does this sort of stuff a lot is well. Painting a sonic picture with the ideas of say Nietzsche, Crowley, Jung and couple that with mythology, gnostisism, hermeticism, satanism, paganism, Kali yuga and on and on and on... That is the same thing Jim Morrison was doing back in those days. It's called art! Open the flood gates for the swirling vortex to rip through the fabric of reality. On and on Subconscious Lucifer...

Thrashpit: Many of my favorite authors have come from the New England area, all of them possessing a very peculiar style I have never seen in any other region. How has living in New England driven your sound?

Name:

Heathen: I come from a small fisherman's town in New Hampshire. New England has a pretty interesting history when it comes to "strange" characters. Aleister Crowley declared himself a magus right here in New hampshire, Blackbeard had his honey moon on a little island off the coast where I live. Then we have HP Lovecraft tapping into other dimensions and communion with the Ancient ones. Witch trials, pirates, sorcery, Mega Therion, paganism. It's all right here in New England waiting to be discovered and reborn... Well, it's been reborn. CNV channels it and casts its curse on this fucking drone society of money driven slaves. Hopefully we can orchestrate some sort of LSD revival or Helter Skelter. Something different from the mediocity the world banks have thrust upon us. CNV is my revolt against the modern world!!!

Thrashpit: There is an old saying that a musician is his own harshest critic. With this in mind, what is your favorite song on Domination and Servitude? Why?

Heathen: I can't really say I have a favorite. All of them evoke something I'm looking for.

Name:

Thrashpit: Domination and Servitude has tons of samples within it. If you do not mind saying, where did some of these come from and why did you choose the ones you did?

Name:

Heathen: The samples add to the overall effect of the album. They are utilized in a way where it forces you to think. There are samples from films like Haxen, Pearls Before Swine, Blair Witch Project.

Thrashpit: How did you approach the lyrics for Domination and Servitude? Being your first full-length album, it does represent the entirety of your band’s previous output after all!

Name:

Heathen: Lyrics are always a sort of trial and error thing with me. I try and put the right amount of time into them and I am obviously drawing a lot of inspiration from Occultism and Philosophy. Yes, Domination and Servitude embodies the evolution of the band through out the years. It's like a alchemical molotov cocktail. The next album will be akin to a alchemical atombomb... A slithering, serpentine, subconscious mind fuck!!!

Thrashpit: Outside of Cold Northern Vengeance, you play in a band called Martyrvore. How does your work there differ from what you do in Cold Northern Vengeance?

Name:

Heathen: Well I do some vocals for Martyrvore here and there. I don't write any of it. That's the brain child of Chris Maclean and Matt (CNV). Total old school filthy death metal... That's Martyrvore

Thrashpit: What about the live arena? Does Cold Northern Vengeance have any interesting touring plans coming up?

Yeah, we are definitley going to be playing more gigs away from home. Going to hit a lot of places down south and out west and looking to do some dates in Canada as well. Europe is the main goal. I've been to Germany before and they don't fuck around when it comes to metal. The UK, Germany, Austria, Italy are all places we need to check out. There are so many different land marks I am dying to see...

Name:

Thrashpit: Last question! What does the future hold for your band?

Name:

Heathen: To evolve and delve further into this pandora's box we have opened. To continue on this left hand path and see what happens along the way. To pursue the 93 current and unveil "The Great Work"...

C'mon fags dispute it, let's do this

Name: Heathen: That's a tough one. I'm not exactly sure. Nietzsche had a quote that said one must have chaos inside himself in order to give birth to a star. Something like that. The By Paths to Chaos. Songs that channel the Dionysian force. That mystical and hypnotic force. That's what we're all about. Can you pin point and completely define chaos? Neither can I. CNV is art and I believe that true art knows no bounds. People will try to pigeon hole it, it gives them this petty sense of comfort.

that is a great question : my defination of a netwarrior is someone who signs on anon but puts people down not anounces constructive things for their band etc..

This is pretty obvious, there is a band getting attention that is not following a trend but doing what they want, with no concern of fashion or being part of a 'scene.' Anyone can act tough and hide behind a computer. I suppose it IS a novel idea that a band with talent AND orginality can be getting noticed that doesn't play shitty emo metalcore faggotry.

Why such a disdain towards Nietzsche? First of all, that interview doesn't even come close to establishing the complexity behind Nietzsche's often highly misunderstood philosophies. Nor do I think that was the point of the interview. I believe that if you can't offer a critical analysis of his work, then you clearly haven't examined any of his writings; thus failing to appreciate his significance.

toggletoggle post by MillenialKingdom  at Apr 17,2009 2:49pm
It's not Nietzsche himself I really have a problem with. I love philosophy and am willing to read all kinds of it. It's the people who suck his dick in interviews and in lyrics.

toggletoggle post by darkwor  at Apr 17,2009 3:20pm
Philosophy is just a toolbox of ideals and ideas; to live by the words of a philosopher in the vein of Nietzsche, you're bound to look back on your life in old age and realize you have accomplished nothing.

Occult, mysticism, paganism, magick - is all fantasy, as religion is in all forms. Interesting, but fantasy. No different than reading the Lord of the Rings. I appreciate the ceremonial arts, the "dark arts" but that's what it is - art - made to find a balance and meaning within yourself.

To stand embraced by the New England shoreline in awe and solitude, you don't need to be a misanthrope to find meaning in it. Humanity is destined to survive the next mass extinction and conquer the stars. Misanthropy, religious fundamentalism, and willful ignorance hold us back, but at least CNV uses their misanthropic point of view to create art - and black metal is a higher form of art than most (usually). They use their interpretations of those philosophies and writings to perform their own rituals and create music - simple as that. That's how it should be.

This guy expressed my thoughts better than I can. I share some of Paul's philosophy, I don't know how much, I certainly don't share his manner of expression...but it doesn't matter: his beliefs, his "will" result in art, and that gives them validity regardless of how crackpot it may seem. Though flawed, this is what has always made black metal special. What have your confused religious views led you to actually create, "MillenialKingdom"? This is completely derailing my point, but good lord you are fucking dumb. It's like you just don't speak the language, you have no idea how to formulate a relevant opinion.

Oh and THX for the memories Paul...damn I did look good when I was 17, huh...and Meg's my favorite aryan princess
