Beckett had a shitty year? maybe by his standards, but not by the league's standards

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Apr 6,2009 9:43am
Disappointing year. Especially after the year he had 2 years ago. Definitely a shitty year for a "top-notch" pitcher.

toggletoggle post by boblovesmusic   at Apr 6,2009 9:46am
Personally I think there should be mines and other dangerous obstacles on the field to make things more exciting.

"oooh, Manny is running towards home!!" *boom!* "Aww didn't make it.. but his head!" did!

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Apr 6,2009 9:47am
One thing I must say though.. the Red Sox relief pitching (especially 7th-8th inning) has the possibility to be lights out all season long.

Ortiz? He'll suck. If you look at his stats, they line up perfectly with the roid era. He's been a stiff for a while now. 28hr, 101RBI this year. I'd hope 45hr, 130RBI this year but I doubt it. Hopefully his .avg will be above 300.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Apr 6,2009 9:48am
i can't believe baseball is dropping to my 4th favorite out of the 4 big sports. i never thought basketball would overtake it, but it is.

What you talking about? Fenway's got a retractable roof now?

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Apr 6,2009 9:51am
True, but after losing to the Rays last year and with the powerhouse Yankees this year, the negativity is sinking in again.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Apr 6,2009 9:51am
lol I'm surprised Lucchino hasn't done that yet

Get on it, Larry.

the Yankees will falter again....putting together teams like they do doesn't work in baseball anymore

they'll start out like a house of fire then fizzle out IMO

Predictions for the 2009 season:

- I will be bored stupid with baseball for several months.
- The Yankees will face injuries to a handful of key players and trade away all their minor league prospects for whatever big name is on the trading block.
- Curt Schilling still can't wait to tell you what he thinks about stuff.
- Dustin Pedroia will continue to be the fucking man.
- Gullible people will still continue to be mad at Manny Ramirez for no real reason.
- Girls will attend baseball games that they lack the ability to comprehend.
- Larry Luchino will block out the sun in a Mr. Burns-esque display of super villainy.
- The supposed ticket price freeze (probably the most backhanded favor ever) will be made up for in a 300% increase in concession prices.
- I will complain about baseball, but still follow it every day, goto games whenever I get the opportunity, and scream at the TV whenever applicable.

i'm negative about baseball. all the steroids and asterisks in the record books are getting me down. maybe i'll snap out of it when the summer hits, but i just don't love baseball like i used to. i'll really miss hockey once the playoffs are over.

As of now I'm much more concerned with Bruins and then the Celts. I really don't get into Baseball until All-Star Break. I'll definately watch and follow, read the globe (if it's still in print) but Baseball isn't Baseball until August.
I'm baffled that they're opening at home this early. I'm also baffled by the surge in pink hats....I know a bunch of girls having opening day parties but still don't know shit about Rich Gedman, the toilet stance or Scott Cooper hitting the cycle.

After one subpar year, that came after one Cy Young caliber year, that came after a year where he was self-admittedly stubborn and would throw nothing but fastballs and gave up a lot of HRs, and you're ready to write off Beckett entirely? That's very, very harsh.

Papi, I can see....I've kinda lost confidence in him too.

Ellsbury is awesome....leave Man Who Runs Like Lightning ALONE!!

Buchholz just hasn't put it together yet, but if his spring is any indication (I don't put much stock is spring training performance, but he looked GOOD), then he'll be in the majors sooner rather than later and fooling dudes with his huge curve

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Apr 6,2009 6:15pm

that's a lot

I'm hoping he has another great year. But then again, you'll never know. I just don't have FULL confidence in him like I used to. We'll see.

Also, DICEK. Hopefully he can learn to keep his pitch count a little lower.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Apr 6,2009 6:39pm
Dice has to stop trying to hit the corners all the time....although last year, walking the bases loaded strangely worked very well for him....lol

I'm excited for this season. It's my first year of doing fantasy baseball and I have Pedroia, Pap, and Lowell.

I think Jason Bay will lead the team in hits and Pedroia will lead in RBI's. Papi will be slow out of the gate until maybe late May or June. The bullpen will rape people all season.

I'm really starting to hate Dice-K. I think him and Brad Penny are atrocious this year.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jun 11,2009 3:02pm
Hate Dice-K? You've brought it to that point already?

He is a pretty boring pitcher to watch, only because he takes his sweet-ass time and likes to load the count. The key to him is if he can get to the 7th inning with 80 or more pitches. Pitching 100+ pitches by the 5th inning doesn't cut it. I could do that shit.

toggletoggle post by W3 nli at Jun 11,2009 3:04pm
Brad Penny is doing fine for a bargaining chip pitcher, but yeah D-Mat is a fucking D-Bag and needs to be traded they would clean up if they traded him earlier in the year but now he's garbage.

they need a solid SS and if Ortiz is still not hitting the rest of the month they def need one more big bat, i dont see why they dont let some of those young guns come up from triple a and give them a go wouldnt be any worse then Ortiz and might actually show they can play in the bigs.

solid middle of the line up though shits crazy.

toggletoggle post by MillenialKingdom  at Jun 11,2009 3:09pm
I think Nick Green is doing a decent job at SS but he's not an every day starter. I heard a rumor the Sox were looking at Jack Wilson from the Pirates. That would be great.

Aril, I only dislike Dice-K so much right now because every time he pitches, he's only slightly better than Ching-Ming Wang. He gives up way too many walks, especially when he's already ahead in the count. It's so annoying. He's not worth the amount of money we spent on him. Hell, he's not even worth sticking in the bullpen.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jun 11,2009 3:13pm
I think Dice-K's got potential to rebound. He's got good stuff but he has had horrible location since he got back off the DL. His last start was strange because he had excellent location, but everyone hit his pitches. He has to find a happy median somewhere and learn to work the corners more.

Actually I think the Yankees are going through the same thing with their Japanese star - Matsui. They are obviously phasing him out. He plays DH now due to his past injuries and he also ended a 0-16 slump last night against the sox. Dude's only batting .250 this year.

toggletoggle post by W3 nli at Jun 11,2009 3:14pm
Nick Green isnt even a solid backup, he's helped make our infield horrible. well him and that 9million dollar weight sitting on our bench but yeah Lowrie needs to come back fast. i mean he's no power guy but he's solid on the field, we need a good pedoria on the leftside of the infield.

you know someone who can bat 285 15hr 85 rbi and like 20 sb thats got some range in the field thats all im asking for doesnt have to be gold glove but fuck even john valentin would be better then the doods out on the field right now.

rather have Green than Lugo...in fact, when Lowrie gets back, I hope they cut Lugo and eat his money

Dice's problem (except for his last game) has always been that he tries to strike every batter out by trying to get swings and misses...he's gotta get it through his stubborn head that in the majors, most batters won't swing at that stuff...he should pitch to contact much, much more (which he did his last start, but his stuff wasn't as good as it usually is)

i think half of dice's problem is all mental. he always looks intimidated when he's pitching. dude needs to relax, listen to some Sigh or Abigail and clear his mind.
he's 1-4 right now, let's hope he can finish the season 11-8 or 13-9, 17-4(yea right)

I don't think that's it...at least not the "intimidated" part

I just think he needs to stop thinking he can strike every batter out...hopefully, he doesn't revert to that in his next start because the Rangers had 10 hits on him when he actually threw over the plate

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jun 11,2009 3:41pm
I sincerely hope he doesn't follow in the footsteps of Hideo Nomo. Dude was great his first couple of years, then sucks horribly after that.

toggletoggle post by W3 nli at Jun 11,2009 4:58pm
well Nomo i think had surgery on his elbow, and then kinda started getting his shit back i mean he did throw a no no for the sox.

d-bag just needs to stop listening to everyone and pitch the way he did last year if he's gonna take a million years inbetween each pitch i dont care as long as he's getting outs and getting us wins.

-ortiz 3hr in past 5 games
-saito has been much better

that win last night looked like a win from back in like 2004 when they'd be down late in the game, then their bullpen (Saito)/defense (Baldelli) would bail them out, and everything else would go right....awesome game

as good as Penny has looked lately, he might have stamped his ticket outta here with that performance last night....his trade value most likely will never be as high as it is right now

toggletoggle post by W3 nli at Jun 12,2009 1:26pm
yeah thats what i was thinking lastnight. too bad to cause he's looking solid and in all honesty we dont know what we got with bucholz and smoltz yet theyre killing it down in the minors. which to me means jack shit till theyre up in the bigs crushing it.

trade clay boy and get some goods

this season is far from over...Yankees could bomb out....and I don't see the Sox offense staying this bad for the rest of the season

understand this: the TEAM won us 2 championships...it had little to nothing to do with tito other than he kept friendly w/ all the players. I challenge you to come up w/ one decision he made that led to either of those championships besides sticking w/ Pedroia during his slow start.he's a players coach and 1 more season of the type of decision making he's made this year AND HE'LL BE RUN OUT OF TOWN!

2 off the top of my head:

1) starting Ellsbury over Crisp in the 2007 playoff/WS run
2) starting an unproven David Ortiz (I know when he first got here he was sharing time with Jeremy Giambi, but NO ONE saw him doing anything until Francona started him)

just pissing about his pitching decision...especially lately. I think when you get to crunch time in the season as we are now the pitch count should be reconsidered if the pitcher is in the zone and if a game is getting out of hand , don't let the dude keep pitching!!!!

2 rebuttals to that: you shouldn't mortgage your future on one game, so keeping a tight pitch count for some pitchers is the right thing to do....and I think Tito wants to show he has confidence in guys that they can get out of jams, which doesn't always pay off (read: Smoltz x infinity)

its important though...if you take a guy out every time he gets in a jam, the pitcher will lose confidence in you, which is the worst thing that can happen to a coach/manager...but if you leave them in in a jam and they get out of it, his confidence (both in himself and in the manager) will go through the roof

case in point: Jon Lester...he'd get into jams pretty much every inning it seemed for the first 2 years in the majors, and was able to get out of 99% of them...I personally think he wouldn't be the pitcher he is right now if Tito had taken him out every time he was in a big pressure situation

after releasing smoltz, his era is in the .8 range or something and he's piling up the strikouts.
after releasing brad penny (who hasn't won a game since june mind you) he throws 8 shutout innings for the giants.

is this because they can't play under pressure in boston, or is it a testament to how much better the American league is to the National league?

either way, imma act like none of this happened.

Ortiz? He'll suck. If you look at his stats, they line up perfectly with the roid era. He's been a stiff for a while now. 28hr, 101RBI this year. I'd hope 45hr, 130RBI this year but I doubt it. Hopefully his .avg will be above 300.
