New site? Maybe some day.
i know i've seen some people here like Niccolai and someone else discussing cars. i'm really interested in learning more in terms of DIY engine repair, so i bought an 84 Impala, carbureted 229 V6, and it needs some work done, but my knowledge is very limited. it needs plugs, wiring and a fuel filter right off the bat. i know the plugs and wiring aren't difficult, but how in depth is changing a fuel filter? is it something i should have assistance with, or something i could figure out? |
fuel filter or air filter? |
fuel. air isn't anything big. |
ya thats about as far as my expertise goes lol |
get one of those guide things from an autoparts store. |
delete your system 32 manifold |
i think i figured it out, i'll just do a barrel roll. |
I don't know about that barrel roll, I just got off the phone with my buddy who's an ASE certified mechanic and he recommended you shoop da whoop. |
alright, i'll check around for a Shoop Da Whoop guide. |
If you glue a plastic Jesus to the dashboard of an '84 Impala, the thing will run friggin' sweet. |
you gotta get curb feelers and gold spoke rims |
And an old war veteran's hat in the rear window. |
i actually drove an 85 impala in a demo derby. that thing was fuckin sweet. sucks because it was actually a lot nicer than the car i was driving at the time |
Be sure to re-align your engine block or else you engine won't cool down right and will over heat a lot.
Just giving you a heads up. |
hahaha 17 posts and only one useful thing said. it gets me all misty eyed. |

that must have done well, i can't imagine this tank being taken over by anything. |
well except a Chrysler Imperial, those things are still banned from derby's. |

no i haven't gotten to it, hopefully tomorrow. i have to change out the filter in my transmission too, its so sluggish going from neutral to first. |
i hope you didnt think that realigning the engine block comment was useful, because it wasnt. everything about cars is easy if you have the right tools and know what youre doing. everything about cars is a pain in the ass if you dont have the right tools and dont know what youre doing.
also, dont expect changing your filter to help the transmission very much. thats a 25 year old car, i bet that thing has taken a beating. |
Are you sure it's not the tie-rod belts? |
you dont know how to change a fuel filter on an 84 impala? must be gay.
seriously though, shits mad easy on old cars before computers. just buy one of these manuals for 15-20 bucks at CAP http://www.haynes.com/ you will be able to read the shit step by step with pictures of EVERYTHING you would ever need to know about fixing your car. |
the fuel filter is usually an inline filter somewhere near the carb/throttle body or underneath in the fuel line behind the front or rear passenger tire. just follow the fuel line from the tank back up into the engine you will see where it unscrews to replace the filter. fuel filters basicly resemble tampons and cost about 2 bucks.
my first car was an 84 monte carlo and i pretty much replaced everything in the entire car. |

haha obviously, but it is technically helpful, if doing something completely different.
i've been reading about it online, its not hard. the transmission i think just needs to be flushed out, like said previously, its a 25 year old car. an antique. i'm really interested in doing the same, replacing all kinds of shit. i'd just rather do as much as possible on my own. and oh yes, gay i be. |
I didn't read the whole thread...kinda in a hurry. It depends where the fuel filter is on those, not quite sure where it is on that exact car. It could be easy and done in 5 minutes or it could be the biggest pain in your ass. Regardless, GM FTW. |

Yea it's pretty much as plug-and-play as you can get. Not a perticularly crazy repair.
it can be a pain in the ass to get the old one off, but if you run into that obstacle, i reccomend a little wynn's number 5 spray. should loosen it right up.
I don't suppose I need to say anything as obvious as dont heat the damn thing to loosen it. |
