I was an avid PC gamer ever since I used to play QBERT, FROGGER, ALLEY CAT, DEFENDER OF THE CROWN, and so on on 5 1/4 inch floppies.
I am talking about games from 1982-2000. The classic PC Gaming era.

Here's some classics I've played recently: CARAMEGEDDON (1st one), LORDS OF THE REALM 1 & 2, RED BARON II, MICROSOFT'S CLOSE COMBAT, HERETIC, DESCENT, AGE OF WONDERS, ALBION, MYTH (not myst, MYTH - great fucking game), and SHADOW WARRIOR (who wants some wang?)

I know there's more people that used to play such games, so if anyone has actual copies and would be willing to trade / rip, whatever, let me know. I've still got a bunch. List some other classics.. there's so many of them.

I must also note that I still have just about every demo cd from PC Games, PC Gamer, and PC Accelerator magazines from the 90s if anyone wants to check those out.

Besides the obvious classics like Duke Nukem, DooM, Wolfenstein, I also used to play Thief a whole lot.

they need to put Carmeggedon out for 360

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 11,2009 10:47am
Only software rendering is real. It was such a big deal when the games slapped "3DFX!!!" on their boxes.
I kind of saddens me how PC Gaming is dying. Most Gamestops only have a tiny shelf with the PC games on it. Not only did they downsize the size of PC game boxes around 2000, but they've treated them like they're pieces of shit.

Fuck you, new age console gamers. Taking over PC Games.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 11,2009 10:50am
The first Carmeggedon is so fucking classic.
I love how they had Demanufacture by Fear Factory on the soundtrack haha.

PC gaming will always be a better experience than console gaming. Aiming with a mouse and keyboard is 10000000000x better than aiming with a controller. The graphics always were and always will be better on PCs. I mean, %99 of console games are still developed using PCs which automatically means the computer is better.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 11,2009 10:55am
backed 100%.
although some argue that 360 and other consoles run "smoother" than PC games today, it's safe to assume that with an upgraded PC, it will blow it out of the water. the videocards right now are better than the ones in the consoles.
I mean, I wouldn't even call them consoles anymore. 360 and PS3 are pretty much PCs themselves.

toggletoggle post by This_Is_Heresy_nli at Feb 11,2009 10:55am
Those are all classics. But uh, Monkey Island anybody? eh? eh?

"You fight like a dairy farmer"
"How appropriate. You fight like a cow."

Good times.

Absolute essentials:

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 11,2009 11:04am
Darklands - Party-based RPG set in a pseudo-historical Germany during the time of the Holy Roman Empire. One of the few electronic "RPGs" to be heavily influenced by actual old-school tabletop RPGs, in that it's almost completely open-ended - you set your own goals and your actions influence the game world. Plus it has the cult of Baphomet, so win.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 11,2009 11:05am
Do you have a copy of Darklands?

toggletoggle post by c.DeAD at Feb 11,2009 11:37am
I love all the old FPS games like Wolfenstein 3-D, Blakestone, Doom and Duke Nukem. I was also big into Warcraft 2 when it came out and all and I mean ALL the Sierra made Leisure Suit Larry games were the absolute shit. My brothers were big into the Kings Quest games but I always hated the RPG games. I just can't get into them.

But I digress. To me consoles were always better for gaming because thats all they were/are used for. I don't get the whole "mouse's are better for FPS games you poser!" argument. I used to play FPS games all time on the computer and I play them all the time now on my 360. A controller is better. I fucking said it.

I'm way more accurate with a mouse.

toggletoggle post by AnotherMetalDrummer  at Feb 11,2009 11:41am
I loved the command and conquer games... I still play red alert too! Fucking classic game, way better than warcraft!

toggletoggle post by porphyria at Feb 11,2009 11:44am
Mouse/Keyboard has always had advantage over a standard controller for FPS games. If todays FPS games were cross platform compatible I'm sure most PC users would own all of them.

Haha - screw you buddy, I'm posting on a phone, here. Wait 'til lunch.

Also, the Golden Age of PC gaming definitely starts in the 70s and ended around '89 or so. The 90s (i.e., the shareware era) would be the Silver Age. (No less awesome for that, though.)

toggletoggle post by darkwor  at Feb 11,2009 11:59am
PC gaming will never die. Consoles have gained popularity because overall it's much cheaper and no computer knowledge is required. I have no problem playing FPS games on a console, but FPS and strategy games belong on the PC.

Most multiplatform games are inherently better on PC - that's the platform they were developed on after all.

The only downside is that if you're playing console games on the PC mouse aiming eliminates any challenge they had. I had San Andreas for the PC and did not die during a single mission, and the gang turf wars were so easy that whenever I wanted more ammo I'd do those instead of going to Ammu-nation.

Kinda backs up the mouse>gamepad argument. I remember being so psyched to play WH40K Fire Warrior (nerd that I am), only to find it was a direct PS2 port, and therefore had about a 3rd grade difficulty level when played on a PC. I got too bored to finish it.

The Golden Age does start in the 70s.
My favorite era of PC gaming is from 1991-1998. I think the best games (most innovative by today's standards) were released in that timeframe.

here's some more classics:

-Rainbow Six (the original)
-System Shock 1 & 2
-Age of Empires 1
-Daggerfall (fuck you, Oblivion)
-The Neverhood (FUCKING CLASSIC CLAYMATION GAME!)
-Quake 1
-Thief
-MDK
-Need for Speed 1 & 2
-CHIP'S CHALLENGE
-SKI FREE
-Klik n' Play (design your own games)
-Sim City 2000 (city copter 1 reporting heavy traffic, mother fuckers)
-Sim Farm
-Civilization
-XCOM games
-Hexen
-Blood
-Redneck Rampage
-Outlaws

I've got to hunt down my System Shock 1, but I do have an .iso of System Shock 2. It came out around the same time as Halflife, so it was immediately looked over. It's a sick fucking game.. very dark and brooding, almost like Doom3 but with way more RPG touches. It's not the best "action" FPS, but it's more along the lines of a sci-fi horror game.

And as for as Mac goes, I think I remember playing Realmz. Wasn't that the turn-based game with an overhead view?
Steve- it somehow disturbs me that your father plays Redneck Rampage.

Sid Meier's Colonization - Hidden gem. This one never got the exposure it deserves, I think. Right on the heels of Civ2 (with nearly the same graphical style), this is basically Civilization on a zoomed-in level - specifically, the colonization and/or raep (NATIVES, LOL) of the New World. You pick one of 4 European powers - England, Spain, the Netherlands, and Franceland - each of which have their own special ability. England generates new immigrants faster due to religious persecution, Spain fucks up the natives easier, the Netherlands has some trading crap, and France generates native tension slower.

You start the game just off the coast of the Americas with a small ship loaded with one free colonist and one soldier. You set up a colony, meet and/or raep the natives, trade with the mother country (or the natives, or the foreign powers later in the game), and deal with the other colonies.

The main points where this gets more involved than Civ are colonist specializations and resource management. You can get occasional population increases from having excess food, but most of your colonists come from the mother country - the faster you generate church bells (build churches and assign preachers), the faster they show up at the dock. Some come with a specialty (farmer, ore miner, statesman, etc.), others are "free colonists" ready to be taught one (either at a schoolhouse/university or by friendly natives), while still others are indentured servants or even convicts (unskilled at anything other than working outdoors, but can be converted to free colonists with education). If you establish missions at native villages, eventually natives will join your colonies - they suck at industry but rule at farming and fishing. A free colonist can do any job, but not as efficiently as a specialist.

Resource management is huge - you don't just generate generic "income," you have to make or trade for whatever you need. You can buy stuff from the mother country, but the point of the game is to declare independance, and the more you buy at home the more they have to spend on soldiers. Also, the tax rate goes up the more you sell - the only way to stop this is to declare a [INSERT TRADE GOOD HERE] party, where you d00dz dump a cargo of whatever it is in the harbor, the tax rate goes down, the mother country refuses to sell you that stuff until you pay back taxes, and rebel sentiment goes up.

AND SO ON AND SO FORTH - INVOLVED GAME IS INVOLVED, LOL

Also this old old game i remember playing at my neighbors house on his ancient IBM from 1993 or something. It was sort of like a board game/RTS where you controlled these cone shapes and somehow a tornado worked into the plot. It's quite funny.

This thread is full of games that blow away anything PS3 or Xbox has to offer. Maize eaters.

Came in here to laud Jazz Jackrabbit. I see aril got the title wrong but still glad to see it was mentioned. Jazz was a fucking pimp.

Jizz Jackrabbit

Even though Jazz was a ripoff of Sonic, he was way cooler.

For the past hour I've been obsessed with trying to find this math game that came out in the late 80s that took place in a really fucked up haunted house. I think I might be imagining it though.

STREETS OF RAGE

Alpha Centauri was another great game. I loved how you could customize the crap out of your own units.

Another one I used to enjoy was Syndicate. Fun tactical strategy game with somewhat cool graphics and relatively open-ended gameplay.

ALso, anyone remember MDK? You were a weird pointy headed black alien guy. Just a third-person shooter, but I remember having a lot of fun with it.

FUCK I wish I still had all this shit.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Jun 19,2012 10:26am
alpha centauri fucking rules. i've actually never played syndicate but always heard about it. there was a remake of MDK recently but i never played that either. dude all this is easy to steal online if you weren't such a n00b. also http://www.gog.com/ has all these games for ~5.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Jun 19,2012 10:26am

This time, I will actually show some love for gaming.

First off- why did Origin Systems have to sellout to EA. Fuck you EA.

Wing Commander Series
Privateer Series
Ultima Series (best RPG games ever and I will fight about it. Even VIII and IX)
Ultima Online (best MMO ever)
Crusader series
System Shock
Bioforge

Also - Lucasarts

The Star Wars flight sims alone were beast.

Which leads me to - WHY DO GAMES SUCK SO BAD NOW? STOP HOLDING OUR HANDS.

ITT: Mass Effect 3 has a "skip all the boring combat and exploration, just click through the story" option, now. For real.
