My point is that the spellings are one letter off, so why is the pronounciation completely different? Like McDonald (Irish) and MacDonald (Scottish) are pronounced almost exactly the same. But Gomes (Portugeuse) and Gomez (Spanish) don't even have the same amount of syllables. Its like if you were Irish you'd pronounce your last name McDaald. Also, is a single Portuguese person a Portugoose?

The reason why it's different is the same reason why words are different in different languages. If you try to say thank you in thirty languages, it's going to sound different in every single one. Same thing goes for Gomes.
