For House of Blues, encore on a grand scale
Music franchise returns to Hub, hoping to boost music scene on Lansdowne Street
By James Reed, Globe Staff | January 18, 2009

Ever since the clubs Avalon and Axis closed in late 2007, Lansdowne Street hasn't looked quite the same on weekends. The familiar sights - 20-something clubgoers in slinky dresses mingling with indie rockers in tattered Converse shoes and Red Sox fans spilling out of Fenway Park - have given way to smaller crowds en route to the street's other bars and restaurants.

That's set to change next month when the House of Blues returns to New England in the space formerly occupied by Avalon, Axis, and a smaller club next door called the Modern. The new 53,000-square-foot complex will include a music hall, a restaurant, a VIP lounge, and a gift shop. The venue, which will hold more than 2,600 people, officially opens Feb. 20 with a performance by the Gipsy Kings.

"It's going to be the busiest place that's ever been at that location," said Don Law, president of Live Nation New England. "Avalon and Axis were doing between 100 and 125 shows a year, but House of Blues could do nearly double that, closer to 300.
"

The club will not, however, bring back the popular dance nights that were a huge part of Avalon's success. "It's really much more of a dedicated performance space than it ever was," Law said.

Initially Avalon and Axis, whose combined capacity was about 2,550, closed to become the Lansdowne Street Music Hall, set to reopen late last year. But those plans were shelved when nightlife impresario Patrick Lyons sold the property to Live Nation, which owns House of Blues..

Law said the Roxy and the Palladium in Worcester are the chief competitors to House of Blues. The Orpheum Theatre, which seats 2,642, is already booked by Live Nation.

The new Lansdowne venue is the company's 13th, and largest location, and also the biggest club complex in Boston. It will have three levels: general admission on the first floor and two seated mezzanine areas. The hall will also be able to scale down to 1,000 seats for smaller shows by closing the third level, Law said.

An 80-seat restaurant will serve Southern-style cuisine. The complex will also have a swank membership-based lounge called the Foundation Room.

Still a construction site as the opening nears, 15 Lansdowne has had a storied nightlife history dating to 1969 when the psychedelic club the Ark first opened. Other clubs came and went - Boston Tea Party, Boston-Boston, the Metro, Citi - until Avalon opened in 1992.

That's the same year Isaac Tigrett cofounded the first House of Blues with actor and musician Dan Aykroyd. David Fortin, House of Blues' vice president of marketing, worked at the Cambridge location and remembers Tigrett's vision for the club.

"He wanted a place that had a juke-joint kind of vibe," Fortin said. "I think he identified with Cambridge's diversity and academic surroundings and saw it as a good place to do that.
"

In a telephone interview, Aykroyd admitted the chain has hugely expanded its ambitions over the years.

"After many twists and turns, we are a house of all music now," he said. "If we've lost the intimacy of the original, we've at least kept the integrity of the original vision." (In keeping with a tradition that started at the Cambridge location, Aykroyd and Jim Belushi will inaugurate the new House of Blues with a performance as the Blues Brothers on Feb. 21.
)

"I've never seen a club with such as a sense of family and friendship," Saley said, adding that though the new House of Blues will be more than 10 times the size of the original, he's still eager to check it out.

"They're not doing a lot of blues shows, but let's face it: No one really makes money just off the blues anymore," Saley said.

Club bookings reflect that. Yesterday tickets went on sale for shows that appeal to a younger generation, including pop stars Jesse McCartney and Katy Perry, along with indie-rock stalwarts Morrissey and Bloc Party, Metal Acts like LAMB OF GOD, and hometown Irish-punk heroes Dropkick Murphys. B.B. King and George Thorogood & the Destroyers, who attract an older audience, will play the venue, too.
