******warning, pointless silliness ahead********

am a recovering mosh ninja. That's right, it's been almost a decade since my last windmill/cartwheel combo. It's hard, because every time i go to shows i am around it, and i watch it with disgust. It's hard for me to imagine why i enjoyed doing it. I really did love the music, but looking back, i missed SOO many good sets trying to "represent" in the pit. During a show that my band at the time (CATALEPTIC EPISODE) was supposed to play, I found out that FAITH NO MORE had just broken up. And this threw me into a fit of rage. I tied my bandanna tight, i hiked up my UFO cargo pants, and i took out my lip rings to avoid injury. CIRCLE OF HATE was playing on stage, and they were covering "Biotech is Godzilla" from SEPULTURA, and i kicked a kid behind me (by accident) right in the jaw. I felt my foot connect, and turned to see him stand straight as a tree with a glazed look in his eyes. Someone yelled "Timber" and he fell flat on his back. He wasn't seriously injured, but I think he did go to the hospital for X-rays. The show got canceled, (later we found out it wasn't because of me, but because the underage promoter was drinking in his hotel room) my band was bullshit (we were next) and i was devastated. I dance-fought behind a train station that night, braking glass bottles, and smoking cigarettes, and finally burnt my hardcore bandanna in a trash can. I vowed i would never dance-fight again. I took a couple year break from going to shows between the ages of 18 and 23, (coincidentally i don't really remember much of these 5 years) and when i started again, I couldn't fathom ever wanting to do it again.

am i alone? Did anyone else have the same shameful habit i had? What made you stop?

-everything you just read is true.. except the whole dance-fight thing behind a train station. I just love footloose.

I used to make it a habit to toss people down that did that stuff. Hated it then, hated it now

i've never been interested in moshing. i've done it, and been injured, but i'd rather watch the show. in 2001 at an ICP show i snapped my right pinky finger in half, permanently losing the ability to move the middle joint. its bent at a 90 degree angle.

I was just thinking about making a post about the embarrassing things done when young and getting into this scene. Mine would probably be wanting to know everything thing about hardcore and metal and wanting people to like me based on my new found knowledge. Now I want people to like me because I wear sweet sweet sneakers... Also I used to like Vision of Disorder.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:29pm
i think it was kind of a way to make the really terrible band's sets a little more interesting... no that's bullshit, i was an angry, angry child.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:30pm
...and your old band used to cover "jerk off" TOOL. i loved it.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 15,2009 1:31pm
mosh or you are a pussy.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:31pm
there should be a tag for threads that i can put on that let's people know that there is pointless nonsense, and probably a long winded story that doesn't go anywhere inside. I guess ya'll can just assume that when you see my name.

toggletoggle post by JustinSteele   at Jan 15,2009 1:32pm
we were the best nu-metal band ever.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:33pm
how about you rev? I'm talking as far back as that godflesh show at the rat that we were both at. (that place was nuts) Did you ever do it?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 15,2009 1:33pm
@ ouch: that might be already done.... dundundun.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:34pm
you guys actually weren't bad, did your singer ever end up doing anything serious? He had a good singing voice. When he was like 13 that is, that kid always looked super young.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Jan 15,2009 1:35pm
i dont mosh any more. i just get really drunk and run into people at alarming speeds.

toggletoggle post by JustinSteele   at Jan 15,2009 1:35pm
He now sings in a band called The Shills. They're alright. Nothing metal but decent. We don't talk much anymore.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:36pm
rev- yeah, i figured. If it bothered me, i would prob stop.

toggletoggle post by JustinSteele   at Jan 15,2009 1:37pm
I never was able to mosh. I can't dance worth shit either. None of it ever seemed to work for me so now I've grown accustom to grabbing my nearest friend and running around the pit pushing the unfortunate person into everyone. My friends adore me.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 15,2009 1:38pm
I meant the tag thing.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:38pm
justin- do you remember the show that we played with you guys in an outdoor amphitheater in Norton? (i think) while you guys were playing my crack addicted bass player was breaking into the VFW hall behind the place and smoking dust, and stealing all the booze. We got banned from any "Hi-Five" show from then on. I was only 14 when this happened. Crackhead bassist was 20.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jan 15,2009 1:39pm
Does anyone remember the slayer show circa 2000 where the dude somehow snuck the end of a driver (golf club) into the pit and was swinging it around??

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:40pm
hmmm... oh, i thought you meant that people already assumed those things, which i still think is true. Anyways, that tag would be useful. Especially if people could tag other peoples posts to save the "serious" people from wasting time on silliness.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:42pm
aril- what does "circa 2000" mean? do you mean around the year 2000? Or is that a venue?

This happened before I joined but I was there. That venue was crazy and FHS closed the show. It was an awesome show because they played a really long ambient intro and pretty much had the whole crowd playing on their instruments. Those were good days. Lots of different genres played together and it usually had a very positive vibe to it. I miss that feeling of connection to the scene. Seems like everyone likes to separate everything now. Why can't a black metal band and a pop punk band play at the same show? I think it's hilarious and awesome when you mix shit up.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jan 15,2009 1:43pm
it was at the palladium, around 2000-2001. At least from what I remember it was at the Palladium. It was this scrany biker dude. From what I remember, he hit a couple people in the head with it. Not too sure what happened after that. Best Slayer Moshpit I've ever seen

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:44pm
justin- that crackhead is now in jail for attempting to kidnap a girl, with the intent on eating her. And i mean consuming her flesh. Guys outta his freaking mind. I am kinda happy i was hanging with people like that when i was young, now i stay away from the real wackjobs.

toggletoggle post by JustinSteele   at Jan 15,2009 1:45pm

toggletoggle post by aril at Jan 15,2009 1:45pm
nothing wrong with craving flesh, dude.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 15,2009 1:46pm
as for that godflesh show, I remember standing there hoping that the big nazi looking guy that pushed the small punk kid's teeth through his lip wouldn't come near me. I also wished that the kid bleeding from his teeth going through his lip wouldn't get near me.

I get all the shows I went to in the 90's mixed up. was the godflesh show the one that the room was filled up with shitty fogmachine crappiness? the last shows I remember running around like an idiot at were Fear in 96 and Fugazi in 97/98. I vaguely remember running around and kicking/pushing/hitting people and then jumping on top of them.

hahahah FHS:

tell me this, was it: Foxboro High School,
or Fuck High School,
or Foxboro Hotdog Stand?

I never knew. i used to love their "ADD it's like AD&D, it's got something for you, and something for me" song.
Didn't some of those kids turn into Transitor Transitor? I think they mostly all started a band that began with an M... what was it, it was one word i think... Do you know?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 15,2009 1:50pm
oh and trying to just keep standing up. I remember that being the real hard part in a moshpit. then I was at a cannibal corpse show and realized that I could just walk to the front and head bang.

Worst thing in a pit, at least when I used to venture in them, is when some fuckhead intentionally hits you in the nuts. shit still makes me angry.

MOMENT!!!

toggletoggle post by JustinSteele   at Jan 15,2009 1:51pm
There's video of me on the Converge DVD in the opening song. It's humiliating. This was a show in Providence at the As The Sun Sets practice space. I was 18, weighed about a buck thirty and had on a huge Newbury Comics t-shirt. My glasses are huge and I had parted hair. I kept jumping up and down and really looked like an ass. Now I stand with arms crossed judging people (when not pushing my friends because I'm bigger then them).

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 15,2009 1:51pm
wore a cup to a show once.. worst idea ever.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:52pm
yeah, it was MOMENT, anyways, the godflesh show did have lots of fog, and a very strange mix of people, and a girl who's knee got bend TOTALLY the wrong way, so much so that i almost puked when i saw her being carried out.

toggletoggle post by JustinSteele   at Jan 15,2009 1:53pm
FHS became: Moment, My Magnificent Machine, There Were Wires. Pretty much they were very incestuous bands that traded members back and forth. Foxboro has an oddly large representation in the Boston "scene".

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 15,2009 1:55pm
@ouch: funny, I didn't see that, but I saw someone get carried out the back door... which seemed to happen at every single show down there.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:56pm
haha, i went to highschool with Shorty(jon) the drummer from as the sun sets. I took karate with some of the other guys too. (the originals) I used to see em play almost every fucking sunday night at the old living room with DAY AFTER (LOVED that band, still ahve there demo tape)
NOTHING STAYS GOLD (jesse-ex-killswitch singers band after Corrin)
and AT ANY COST.
Those guys were a little too into being moshninja's. They would do it with their guitars in the pit. Very dangerous. Do you remember when they were "CAST OFF SKIN" (ninja scroll reference) they were similar, but with some rapcore parts.. ahhahahah. i bet they wish no one remembered that.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jan 15,2009 1:56pm
I work for the insurance company that writes Lupos and various other venues. You guys should read the claims people submit that are moshpit-related.
I'm pretty sure I'd be breaking the law by discussing them over the internet while at work, though..
Anyway, we got a few from an AVENGED SEVENFOLD show at Lupo's last year. hahaha

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:58pm
@rev: wasn't OOKLA THE MOK from Derry? I used to love those guys.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2009 1:59pm

toggletoggle post by AndrewBastard at Jan 15,2009 2:03pm
I use to 'mosh' before it was the dance party, big open circle where everyone takes turns showing off bullshit that it is now...

Like at Slayer at Lupos in like '98 or something, I was in the thick of it but then it was just a shitload of people really close taking aggression out on each other with out kicks and windmill arm swings etc....

Honestly now I can't stand this shit. I just want to drink my beer near the front of the stage and bang my head/fist a bit and when people are constantly knocking into me, I start to get annoyed but oh well...

nice, i friekin love that band. I like "and still we destroy" the best, but their demo with the black and white angle artwork is the shit. It's got samples from "cemetary man" all over it. And the split with peacemeal is good, but far from as good as the other two.

mike-don't you think if they came out now they'd be bigger than they were?

Former espresso bar/palladium pit ninja.

Got older/had face fractured in 7 places from recieving the foot end of a cartwheel to the face from a dude much bigger than I. Considering how drunk I was/much I was bleeding, I did not fight him. I am a pussy.
