so i got two of these for 280 each. Having these makes my bass drum triggers sound WAY better. Now they have the umph that a bass trigger sound should have.

they are jbl jrx's. they have one fifteen woofer, and a 10inch horn.

toggletoggle post by lawlz at Dec 3,2008 1:04pm
triggers? TRIGGERS? sigh..

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Dec 3,2008 1:19pm
yeah... maybe you're not familiar with the function of how triggers actually work, but you still hit the bass drum every time a sound is made. Matter of fact, it's MUCH easier to hear mistakes in someone's playing when they use triggers. Mainly because the primary function of them is to make what someone is playing on the bass drum more discernible to the listeners through all of the noise of a live setting. 95% of recordings in the deathmetal/grind/tech genre feature triggered sounds for the bass drum. Not because the drummer couldn't play without them, but due to the natural resonance of a bass drum, you can't hear fast patterns distinctly without them. When you play an acoustic bass drum at higher speeds, or play fast tripplets within a steady moderate tempo, the bass drum will still have the attack of the initial hit, but that is terribly mudied by all of the tone that resonated from the bass drum. Resulting in a muddy, indistinguishable sound that is poorly suited for metal.

I was a bass drum purist in my early drumming years, believing that to trigger was to cheat. I was under the impression that you could hit the bass drum once and get extra hits out of it.... I assure you that is not the case. There isn't even a setting for that on my trigger module. And lastly, and most importantly, i can play anything on my iron cobras that i can play on my axis pedal. The only difference is that i can hear the patterns distinctly, even in a live setting with the triggers.

another person that doesn't understand triggers..... sigh...

triggers seriously get a lot of bad press. Most people who haven't used them wouldn't know, but you REALLY have to be right on with them, otherwise everyone knows your off.

nope, i got them at GC. I fucking hate the place, but they had a clearance i couldn't resist. They are sold on Interstate.com for 340 a piece. and i never buy warrantys, at least almost never, some things you should get them on. With these i got one that covers blown speakers, and is 5years long. It was only 40 per speaker too. Fucking sweet.

post some samples of you playing with these suckers

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Dec 3,2008 1:29pm
ok. I will have em up tomorrow for ya.

Triggers can make someone who hits like a limpwristed faggot sound like John Bonham on crystal meth.
That is why I think they are cheating.

toggletoggle post by c.DeAD at Dec 3,2008 2:49pm
Mick Harris didn't have to trigger and his shit sounds tops in old Napalm Death and Painkiller. They aren't needed, but I suppose I like the idea of recording the triggered sound along with the original bass drum sound. Either way, its up to the drummer to not suck.

Listen to Markus from Panzerbastard. No triggers and his bass drum blasts sound amazing.

I think triggers are good for what they are, when used properly. It really depends on what sound you're going for.
I've always preferred without triggers, but like I said, they are good if used properly and for the right sound.

Who cares if it's cheating or not cheating (it IS NOT cheating...requires patience and dexterity), make music the way you want it to sound.

I used triggers for a very short time, and it was not for me. Now I am all about really natural drum sounds, very classic drum sounds and old cymbals (K's and the like). It is good for the stuff that I do. My drumming bases a lot on dynamic, I hit really hard sometimes, lots of ghost notes, and I just love natural sounds and pushing my kit to give me all of its treasures.

Can't do that with triggers, just as there are sounds I can't perfect not using them. Plus I'm a pretty meh blaster.

new or used?

they go for $310 new. saving 30 bucks is not "create a thread about it" worthy of a deal.

fuck i got a pair of peavey sp2's for $500. they go for about $460 each new.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Dec 3,2008 3:01pm
I don't think triggers are cheating. I don't think they sound very good if not done properly (which is most of the case) but they are not cheating. They do not make a drummer sound better. You can always get a good recorded sound by properly mic'ing an acoustic bass drum (not saying I know how to...just that it's very possible) but triggers are where it's at in a live setting...if they don't sound like basketballs.

Oh and I don't drum.

first off, have you seen the bullshit people make threads about on here? and they are new...... and besides, i am excited about them, and wanted to share.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Dec 3,2008 3:11pm
And yes, i agree that there are people out there who play without triggers and get there stuff to sound fast. I am familiar with Mick Harris. Triggers get you a clarity that is pretty difficult to get live, no matter how you play. And i only trigger the bass drum anyways.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Dec 3,2008 3:12pm
...and i also agree that in the studio, the sound SHOULD be mixed with the acoustic sound.
