23 HARD TRUTHS ABOUT ROCK BANDS

1. Never start a trio with a married couple.
2. Your manager is not helping you. Fire him/her.
3. Before you sign a record deal, look up the word "recoupable" in the dictionary.
4. No one cares who you've opened for.
5. A string section does not make your songs sound any more "important".
6. If your band has gone through more than 4 bass players, it's time to break up.
7. When you talk on stage, you are never funny.
8. If you sound like another band, don't act like you're unfamiliar with their music.
9. Asking a crowd how they're doing is just amplified small talk. Don't do it.
10. Never name a song after your band.
11. Never name your band after a song.
12. When a drummer brings in his own songs and asks to perform one of them, begin looking for a new drummer....IMMEDIATELY.
13. Drummers can take off their shirts or they can wear gloves, but not both.
14. Listen, either break it to your parents or we will; it's rock 'n' roll, not a soccer game. They've gotta stop coming to your shows.
15. It's not a "showcase". It's a gig that doesn't pay.
16. No one cares that you have a web site.
17. Getting a tattoo is like sewing platform shoes to your feet.
18. Playing in Hanley & Crewe doesn't mean you're on tour.
19. Although they come in different styles and colors, electric guitars all sound the same. Why do you keep changing them between songs?
20. If you use a smoke machine your music sucks.
21. If blues solos are so difficult, why can so many 16 year olds play them?
22. Rock oxymoron's; "major label interest", "demo deal".
23. 3 things that are never coming back:
a) gongs
b) headbands
c) playing slide guitar with a beer bottle

toggletoggle post by TheGreatSpaldino   at Feb 15,2004 6:35am edited Feb 15,2004 6:35am
the changing of guitars is because of tuning difference. some people fail to realize that because they touch pee pee a lot.

Some people change guitars while the other guitar player and bass player use the same instrument through the whole set. No tuning changes there.
Some people fail to realize that they're not always right. [snicker snicker]

All Ages = $$$.

Do you thinkthey would let us bring someone thats not 21, and bring him on stage with us and say hes a back-up vocalist and lead headbanger? He'll still pay though. Think it would work?

toggletoggle post by DeOdiumMortis  at Feb 18,2004 2:29pm
I think the CB is pretty cool about shit as far as I know. And if someone under 21 shows up WITH the band, where would they go? The door guy doesn't know how close or far anyone lives and I can't imagine him telling anyone who is with the band that they have to stand out on the sidewalk until the show is done.

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Feb 20,2004 3:25am
The show didn't have a very good turnout, which kind of bums me out.

Raising Kubrick played first, it took the first 2 songs for Sarah's voice to really kick in, but Kris and Blue's sporadic energy masked that anyway. By the end they were rocking, it was a good set.

Dissector was second, they were much better then when I saw them at O'Briens, not having technical difficulties helped. They played the song about the leper who lived with his mother's corpse. They also had the zombie mosh guy, who headbanged next to them the whole set! It was awesome, I owe you guys 10 bucks. Email me.

Abhorred was third, they are fantastic. If you haven't seen this band yet then you are so stupid, I hate you.

Ascendancy played third, for a rather short set in my opinion. It was a good set, lots of energy and heckling between songs.

All in all I had a good time, the club was happy with the turn out, as small as it was. But since it was like 6 days notice they aren't holding it against me.

March 20th here I come!

Great show last night, dissector was awesome AND hillarious...RK was amazing as usual...and Ascendancy killed. Buy their CD so they can go on tour in South America. More people need to show up at the next show on March 20. All in all, a great time

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 20,2004 10:31am
raising kubrick: they were all sick and snotty I guess... probably from al the RK ground make-out sessions. sara's voice sounded a bit "manly" and didn't really have any of the high-end screams to it. this was accentuated by the fact that Peter (drums) was britney-spearsing it with a head set, doing back up lows.

dissector: those kids still love zombies and they dabuted the new song about that guy with leprocy (bet he'll be a zombie at some point). For being so young, those kids can really shread. They are a mix of hate eternal and macabre with some exhumed tosed in there.

abhorred: I finally figured it out! the vocals are a mix of pantera (when they were good) and a gruff scream ala goatwhore. interesting cause you can understand most of the lyrics. the guitarist shread too, taking turns in the lead. they slow it down on a track of two and click into southern rock riffs (ala soilent green).

right here, carina's camera die... it's probably going to cost here ~$600 to fix it too. the miror assembly quit on her. this is exactly what I feared happening with my camera.

ascendancy: by this point, there weren't many people there. But ascendancy are just pure, 100% rock stars and pushed through it. They let out some news and they freaking deserve it. I've seen them countless times and I never get sick of them.

toggletoggle post by Pete from RK at Feb 20,2004 10:54am

Yea that sounds about right. We all go to a lot of shows. By the way, do you guys have a website that I don't know about yet?

toggletoggle post by DeOdiumMortis  at Feb 20,2004 3:38pm
Raising Kubrick: Good solid set from these perverts. Tight like a tween and almost as pretty. Peter needs to not hold back on the little jazz-intro, hit them drums bitch! Definitely one of my top three favorites from New England, especially 'cause they all molest me at every show.

Dissector: I heard these guys had to take the day off from their paper-routes to play. I'm glad they did. Kickass gore-grindy fun, but they stole out bit about zombie-rape which made me sad. If they stick together for a couple years they'll be out of control.

Abhorred: More ass-kicking. Like Aaron mentioned too, I could actually understand what was being growled and it wasn't a weak of half-assed growl either. I really liked the couple Soilent Green-esque breaks, good contrast against the death-grind-whatever you want to call it.

Ascendancy: I could've taken a nap at any point during the whole night, including our set, but we pulled our shit together and I think we did pretty well. I'm looking forward to March 20th because we don't have to play last!! Hopefully we'll have shirts by then, everyone buy one so we can afford to go on tour, hah.

Thanks everyone who came, even the pretty girls who left just before our set. They always leave just before our set. I love it. Just another day in the book of metal.

Frey is the "Zombie Mosh Guy"

toggletoggle post by Dissector   at Feb 21,2004 11:15pm
Does anybody know the record of most posts in a thread for RttP? I'm determined we can beat it with this.

toggletoggle post by Terence   at Feb 21,2004 11:19pm
200 something. It was the Bloodletting N. America one back in November.

toggletoggle post by Dissector   at Feb 21,2004 11:21pm
Ok, fuck that idea then.

toggletoggle post by Assuck   at Feb 22,2004 12:24pm
i think we can top 200

toggletoggle post by eddie  at Feb 22,2004 3:58pm
for a show that less than 30 people went to, I say go for it

toggletoggle post by Assuck   at Feb 22,2004 4:39pm
that's what i'm saying

toggletoggle post by frey at Feb 22,2004 7:52pm
i guess the people who worked at the bar really hated the music. oh well, they were just to old to realize how awesome it was.

toggletoggle post by Terence   at Feb 22,2004 7:56pm
less then 30 people? more like less then 8 people.

toggletoggle post by Dissector   at Feb 22,2004 8:00pm
I think it was 8 people exactly.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Feb 22,2004 8:05pm
it was great listening to one of the guys working there talk about how "our music" was basically the downfall of humanity.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 22,2004 8:10pm
i think i missed that...
what were they saying exactly?

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 22,2004 8:12pm
oh! let me add...when aaron and i got there, the venue got a phone call from someone asking what kind of a show it was

and the guy said "punk"

toggletoggle post by blue  at Feb 22,2004 8:12pm edited Feb 22,2004 8:13pm
i wasnt in the convo, only overhearing it. one of the guys was telling sarah how she didnt need to be screaming and doing that "crap" and how her singing voice was amazing, and how she needed to be on the big stage. quite interesting.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 22,2004 8:13pm
bahh forget him...

toggletoggle post by blue  at Feb 22,2004 8:14pm
raising kubrick...redefining punk.

toggletoggle post by Terence   at Feb 22,2004 8:34pm
Some of the best punk bands played that night, I tell you.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 22,2004 8:43pm

yeah--haha, he said I should try to be more like Brittany Spears hahahahaha! this is when serge busted in and basically told the guy to shut up. It was funny because the whole time I was talking to the guy, his friend stood behind him and gestured that the man that said I should be like b. spears was a huge pot head and saying--yeah like you never had your fun days... haha, you old man! hahahahaha

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Feb 23,2004 10:14am
I have done punk shows there, as well as metal, so they just took a chance and guessed punk.

I know that Bob loves the bands I book, that guy is the best.
I have no idea who that old fella was running the door.
The older female bartender doesn't mind it either, probably because she has seen so many bands that recognizing bad from good comes naturally now.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 23,2004 12:27pm
the guy at the door was new cause the "young" guy quit.

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Feb 23,2004 12:28pm
i should get that job

toggletoggle post by Assuck   at Feb 23,2004 3:07pm
i need a god damn job

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 23,2004 3:08pm
yeah aaron and i got there early and heard all the gossip
heh
they are nice people

toggletoggle post by Dissector   at Feb 23,2004 4:16pm
Hahaha, that old guy was funny. "My music was all about being good, your music is all about sound". During RK's set I looked back and he was shaking his head in disapointment going "that's not singing"

Hahaha/

toggletoggle post by blue  at Feb 23,2004 4:31pm
hahahahaha

toggletoggle post by DeOdiumMortis  at Feb 23,2004 6:34pm
That guy was such a weirdo. Who else heard him arguing with Serge about jazz and metal?

toggletoggle post by BornSoVile   at Feb 23,2004 7:10pm
the "young" guy was cool, I think he was a SHARP or something. I stood behind him while Dissector played and felt like a boss at spooky world, cause he was scared and bewildered (sp?). I really like the chopping block though, it's just that parking is a bitch!

toggletoggle post by Assuck   at Feb 23,2004 10:57pm
who was it that thought robert downey jr. was dead because they saw him on tv? i know you're out there

toggletoggle post by Assuck   at Feb 23,2004 11:15pm

i am determined to make this thread reach 200, because i have no life.

toggletoggle post by Assuck   at Feb 24,2004 10:37am

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Feb 24,2004 10:39am
Oh okay, sorry about that.

toggletoggle post by Assuck   at Feb 24,2004 11:39pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 25,2004 9:16am

toggletoggle post by Dissector   at Feb 26,2004 4:43pm
Fine. Rest In Piece, thread...

toggletoggle post by Assuck   at Feb 26,2004 4:44pm
