With the new Metallica on the verge of being releasedica, list some (metal) bands that completely fell apart and should have broke up years ago. Here's a few:
In Flames - Anders should have died after Whoracle
Satyricon - Not a huge fan of stuff after Rebel. seems like they barely try anymore
Trivium - this band shouldn't have existed in the first place.
Metallica - GIVE IT THE FUCK UP

and...

Aerosmith I think is a very good example, a few good albums in the 70's then decades of crap.

well, honestly, I think it's safe to say that most extreme metal bands that've gained commercial success usually end up sucking. Maybe it's because I'm one of those guys who "always prefers listening to the band's older albums."

I thought Obsolete was a good continuation of the Demanfacture sound, with better keyboard integration. Edgecrusher has a Pantera groove and some scratching in it, but they've always experimented with different sound effects and were even doing remix songs as far back as the Soul of a new Machine era. Digimortal was a complete letdown, Archetype was a solid comeback, and Transgression, according to the band, was rushed by the label and they weren't satisfied with the mix or guitar tone. Apparently they weren't given enough time to write more songs; hence two covers. That's their story anyway.

toggletoggle post by Whoremastery  at Aug 26,2008 1:25pm
i hear that..if you take soul of a new machine and obsolete..its alomost(to me anyway) two different bands.. when i first heard ff. soul of a new machine back in the day i was blown away so its just my favorite and i feel they left that sound really quick.

toggletoggle post by aril at Aug 26,2008 1:25pm
I have to agree with Mike - Obsolete is a good continuation of Demanufacture, with a little bit more experimentation. Not every song on it is great, but there are some okay ones. Haven't heard much stuff after Obsolete though, only because I heard some tracks off of Digimortal and I thought it sounded like Nu Metal crap.

Aside from a couple of tracks, I initially thought Clayman was a major letdown. For some reason I always felt that one day I would just "get it", and eventually it happened. In Flames used to be one of my favorite bands growing up and I still enjoy the old sound the most, but oddly enough, I now listen to Clayman the most. I think it's partially due to the fact that I know I'll never see them live again, nor will they ever return to their glory days, so I can accept Clayman for what it is. It's a great metal album with pop sensibilities.

i think in flames lost it after whoracle, although i do like a few songs of colony and clayman. lunar strain, subterranean, and jester race are their best.

i liked obsolete. it was the last fear factory album i liked.

with soilwork, i actually liked figure number five. my favorite is a predator's portrait. stabbing the drama and the new one really suck.

sabbath with dio is really fucking good. i still like most of the ozzy sabbath better, but the dio years were awesome.

Aerosmith was awesome in the 70s, decent from the late 80s to early 90s (i like the get a grip album), and terrible after that. they were my favorite band when i was a kid.

yeah, i was trying not to think about this.
We (boarcorpse) had a 16 year old kid come down to audition singing for us, and he was playing us the bands he likes, dont really remember all the names, but something sounded kinda like older cryptopsy and so i asked if hed heard it... he made a comment about not listening to mallcore. It hurt because i knew he was right (at least now) so i played him "And then you'll Beg" and he was blown away. He said "What happened?!" and we all died a little death.

R.I.P. Cryptopsy - I am finally ready to put you to rest old friend. Shoulda done this before what was not... BANG BANG *puts bullet in old friends head*

you absolutely right markmotherfuckingrichards !! ... after the Ozzy years , as a band, Black Sabbath's music writing became unimaginitive ... not discrediting their skills because they are all incredible musicians but they should have just became Dio's band because he became the key component where as Black Sabbath with Ozzy was the complete band ... they were light years ahead of their time !!! ... they too are my all time fav and i listen to them every fucking day

JOURNEY! Have you heard the new singer? He's a Philipino (sp?) version of Steve Perry. Fucking flawless.

Darkane, to a lesser extent. Rusted Angel was one of the sickest CDs ever; then the singer left to be in a pop or pop rock band, I can't remember. Insanity came out and I wanted to kill myself. Then Expanding Senses and Layers of Lies came out and it was all good.

I definately think they've gone downhill, in my opinion the have at least. I dont think they've fallen apart as much as changed so many members that their direction changed drastically. ok....i'll stop quoting people....i have three more to address....

Deicide....yes the last albums they put out on Roadrunner were awful, but their next two releases were actually pretty fucking good

Skinny Puppy - they always sucked

Crisis - I love the old stuff, and while "Like Sheep Led To Slaughter" Wasn't their best work, it certainly wasn't bad....i actually really enjoyed the song "Blood Burden"......i could just be biased because i have a thing for Karyn (even though i'm usually not into very skinny chicks, or broads with dreads)

A lot of people say Metallica fell apart, I'll admit their last record St. Anger wasn't my favorite, but hey atleast they were doing something different...
If most of these bands out today were as long as Metallica do you think they'd still be writing this death core mumble jumple? probably not.
Metal is a very different genre with many different styles in one.
Metallica just changed their style over the years... Not the best change, but if you can't write the same stuff anymore why try? Hopefully this next record is much better than the last few though.

c.dead - i just always hated skinny puppy.....especially the whole "retard voice through a distortion pedal" vocal style....

just my opinion, but i have heard alot of their material, and it is just a bad attempt at industrial (which is an awful style in the first place) and experimental noise.

mr. annonymous......
Metallica blows, they have for over a decade, nothing they have played since the Black Album even resembles metal.
changing your sound and direction is all well and good, but it's obviously just for money, if it was an artistic decision, i'm sure they wouldn't have made anything as gay as Load (which i thought was bush when i first heard it....i was so disappointed).

Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Deicide, Napalm Death, Gwar....all bands who have been around for 2 decades or longer, and are still playing music that is very heavy....maybe different, maybe not as good as their old shit, but unlike Selloutica, they are still playing very very heavy music

One of the most talented ones in their heyday but I've gotta 100% disagree with you on best band ever!
I've always preferred King Crimson, Yes, Tull, and others to Rush only in the sense that I think Rush fails to capture emotion in a lot of their (newer) songs.

Metallica did change ... when Burton died ... And Justice still carried Burton inspired riffs and music ... i did really enjoy their release of covers in Garage days rerevisited mainly the helpless cover ... they did a good job on that ... then Black began their commercial coming out album ... i listened to it a few times ... never really sat right with me but it was ok ... and then after that album they became trendy and you can hear the lost edge from then on

Rush is the best band ever!! Dreadkill!
One of the most talented ones in their heyday but I've gotta 100% disagree with you on best band ever!
I've always preferred King Crimson, Yes, Tull, and others to Rush only in the sense that I think Rush fails to capture emotion in a lot of their (newer) songs.
king crimson and tull are incredible and can almost hang with rush, but rush completely destroys yes and defecates in yes's dickhole. i like yes, but rush kills them. just my opinion. if i could only listen to 3 bands for the rest of my life, i'd choose katatonia (because they're my favorite), and rush and motorhead (because they are the two best bands i've ever heard).

i like john bush's voice a lot more than belladonna's, but anthrax made some great songs with joey.

toggletoggle post by metal_church101  at Aug 27,2008 12:58pm
Anthrax had way more drive with Joey.

Judging from that VR thread, I'm assuming a number of people will agree that Vital Remains has somewhat feel apart as well

toggletoggle post by orgymf@work at Aug 27,2008 1:15pm
i wouldn't say they fell apart, so much as got lost.
the music they are playing is good, it's just getting very reptetitive.
i think they could pull it back together.
i think this thread more references bands who are beyond repair.....
like Metallica

What about Dimmu Borgir? Everyone always calls them Demon Burger because they're over the top with their image, but how about the new music? I haven't really heard much of the past 3 albums, but I actually don't mind everything up to and including Spiritual Black Dimensions.

toggletoggle post by orgymf@work at Aug 27,2008 3:07pm
i can't judge if dimmu fell apart, since i never really got into em

Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Deicide, Napalm Death, Gwar....all bands who have been around for 2 decades or longer, and are still playing music that is very heavy....maybe different, maybe not as good as their old shit, but unlike Selloutica, they are still playing very very heavy music

..Morbid angels been around for 24 years. (They got together in 84, first vinyl in 87, first full length 97-which was still 21 years ago...) Has anyone heard the new Morbid, its fucking sick as hell. And they've been doin it ALMOST as long as Metallica.

Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, In Flames, Soilwork, Fear Factory, Life of Agony..

Gwar is awesome, Dio is awesome, you can all eat a bag of dicks.

Also Belladonna > Bush. Don't be stupid.

i didn't disagree that Belladonna owns, i just said i like one J.B. era Anthrax album

Dio sucks.
and i will not eat a bag of dicks.
i won't even eat one.

completely unrelated topic.

if so, which ones? what did you think?

Old LoA was awesome. I will fight you to the death.

I have some of his movies on my Blockbuster queue, but due to this:

I have not had time to watch the movies I have and thus have not gotten the Takashi Miike movies yet.

my roommate says the same thing, but i hate it. Mayhem also fell apart, the last albums haven't been good at all. i don't care what anyone says, Ordo Ad Chao was pretentious crap. at first it sounded promising, but then the blandness and lack of depth show through like the sun.

FUCK L.O.A.!! hahaha

you have to understand, i dislike their music, always have....but my hatred for them is increased by the fact that the asshole roommate i lived with (the one i ranted about in the shitty roommate thread) was obsessed with them to the point where he had two LOA tattoos.....one of which he blew his rent money on.

so i have a bias against them.

anyway...putting your baby before Takashi Miike?
you're either a great parent, or a horrible excuse for a japanese horror fan, hah!

shitty black metal = amazingly funny videos.

anyone ever see the video for "willowthewisp" by ancient?
i laughed so much watching that, i had to keep rewinding because i was missing shit, in the end it took me about twenty minutes to finish the video......
plus their awful lyrics....hours of entertainment, i could read them over and over....comedic genius

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Aug 29,2008 10:42am
i wouldn't say "shitty black metal", black metal in general. like the video for "Call of the Wintermoon". that song is so good, but the video is so bad. well, good bad. hahahahaha Ancient, they were one of the first bands i ever listened to back when i was like 15, i had "Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends". i enjoyed it until i discovered the rest of black metal. what a piece of shit that album is.

toggletoggle post by orgymf@work at Aug 29,2008 10:49am
shamefully, i used to own that album as well....
i don't really dig any black metal these days.
i like Marduk, and i get a laugh out of Vondour
that's about it

there's some pretty good 'newer' black metal bands coming out of France, Italy, Greece and Germany right now.

K-Mart witches costume with Bathory shirt ist Krieg. That's one the best joke video's ever.

Immortal video's are so epic. Who else scales down the side of a mountain while slinging a guitar?
