they are so perfectly bizarre. that guy was a fucking genius. i have a bootleg from May 1986 in Missouri that i think is from the soundboard. the bass is a little too loud which rules cuz he does some killer yet tasteful fills and greases things up nicely.

cliff was great.

as far as I am concerned the whole band died with Cliff

toggletoggle post by starmummy at Jun 25,2008 4:57pm
Think of how mythic this band would have been if they all died in that van wreck? 3 of the greatest metal albums of all time and that's it. Damn, kinda wish it happened.

And, yeah, probably my #1 influence.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jun 25,2008 5:01pm
Didn't Cliff also teach thoery and melodic composition to the rest of the band?

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Jun 25,2008 5:06pm
If Cliff were alive today, he'd be a homo, just like the rest of metallica is now.

The only reason any of you hold him near and dear, is BECAUSE hes dead.
We will never witness what faggorty even Cliff Burton, would have succumb to, in the multimedia corporation that is Metallica.

But ya, he was the 'Major rager on the 4 string motherfucker'

see who gives a fuck

His talent was what kept metallica an thrash band and with his talent and influence gone, they veered away from what they were... To much sobriety!!!

toggletoggle post by RichHorror  at Jun 25,2008 8:32pm
He was a huge hippie. He definitely would've pussed out like the rest.

mustaine's influence was way more important.

Yes. Big point.

exactly, until I got to hear is solo fully on the cliff'm All *VHS* I did not know how talented he was. Then after hearing all of that I was just amazed at how much the rest of the band was not that talented without his writing. Kirk, good butnot great, james rythm and lars... could play the drumes with his big mouth... I think Cliff would of changed but not to the point to let B. Rock controll and change the whole matter of what metalica was and to tame and radioize the thrash music. Thrash was not introduced to the mass, but nicely packaged and padded for all hard or rock and roll fans... Thus becoming the not so important metal band of the 90's

Mustaine co-wrote a handful of songs on Kill 'em All, and wrote a few riffs that made it onto Ride The Lightning. Cliff was responsible for the evolution between Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning; as well as the evolution between Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Mustaine was great, but most of the songs he did with Metallica were when they were still a "basic thrash band." Cliff's impact was way more significant, without him, they would have had just another bass player that doubled the guitars exactly like every other thrash bassist of the time

Early Metallica was all Motorhead, Venom, Discharge and shitloads of NWOBHM sped up. They didn't come into being until halfway through RTL.

Cliff was instrumental in getting them to think melodically and use more than basic power chords.

I still cannot call Metallica a thrash band. Thrash is DRI. Metallica is archetypal speed metal. I still like RTL and KEA but can't listen to MOP. It's too self-satisfied.

You are insulting the legacy of the thrash bass.. there were plenty of awesome players that did unique stuff in the 80s.

even though i love the album, i agree. i listen to that one a hell of a lot less than the others. i think Justice is an all around better album.
