So, i have an Alesis DM5. I read the manual for it, and still could not figure this out. Can I use the samples from one set for say, the bassdrum, and use the samples from a different set at the same time with some of the other trigger inputs?

If anyone could answer this, it would help me greatly.

i have a d4, and if its anything like the dm5 (which it is), then yes.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Apr 22,2008 7:43am
ok. Do you know how to do it?

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Apr 22,2008 3:33pm
wait, you talking about putting your own samples into the dm5? I thought you couldn't do that with it.

toggletoggle post by ZenErik   at Apr 22,2008 3:53pm
I don't think you can. Unless you MIDI out to a computer or another module, which is pointless. I'm pretty sure you could just trigger right into an audio interface and run samples from a computer that way. I don't trigger anymore, but I could try it.

Also, if you use a DM5 or anything with unbalanced outputs, you'll probably want a passive DI box between the DM5 and PA mixer. Unbalanced = HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Yup. I gots the hissssssssssssssssss. How much do passive DI boxes run?

I just told Josh from Goreality about this. Mike check out the Radial pro DI sells for $80.

Nope, not my own sounds. Their are a number of preset kits, i just don't know if i can use more than one of them at once.

The BEST part about this whole deal is that all these companies using unbalanced outputs could have balanced them for pennies more.

Besides the DI box, it is possible to rewire the outputs to be balanced (grounded). I just don't know how. I have no experience with fixing any interfaces/modules.

eveyone in this thread is WRONG. he just wants to take certain sounds in certain kits and combine them together.

I figured that was one possibility. I don't know what the point is. The samples on the DM5 kind of blow. It needs to be updated badly. The price for a module that's at least 10 or 12 or more years old is crazy.

Josh from goreality is my roomate. His kit and DM5 are all of 15 feet away from me and I am too lazy to go over there and look and help you out. I'll bother him when he gets home from work about it and post tonight for you though.

this gentleman is right. I need to use the bass drum sound from one kit on trigger input 1, while trigger inputs 2-5 i want to use for conga/bongo sounds from another kit. Does anyone know how to do this?

toggletoggle post by ZenErik   at Apr 23,2008 12:56pm
I know you can do that, but I can't tell you how. I sold my DM5 a year and a half ago. It's a basic feature. You can go through all the sounds and select which one for each input and save it as a kit. And you can make a bunch of different kits too, with whatever combos you want to use.

Here's a question... how do you pronounce "Alesis"?

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Apr 23,2008 1:58pm
I'm not super familiar with the DM 5 due to its terribly gay sounds and impossible to understand popularity in the metal scene, but I assume you need to create a custom kit inside the alesis, and assign the sounds you want to that kit.

It can be done, because everything I've read on that module says you can.

Meanwhile we need to perform and intervention to stop one more drummer from using this shit-assed sampler.

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Apr 23,2008 2:30pm
yes you can mix and match any part of the drum kits. One kit to another, anything like that. It's all doable.

alesis = a lee sis

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Apr 23,2008 3:28pm
ahh that's what I thought. And I started using the DM5 because a friend had one and let me borrow it to fuck around with. I only use it for kick drum.

Mr. arrowhead.... while I agree that the samples are not that hot, it is the only module i could get on ebay to start me off in the trigger world for less than $125. I bought an Axis A2 Longboard for just over $700 with the two ekits, and the electronic cymbals to use for cymbal sounds/latin sounds (for the Tool tribute band i just joined) cost about a hundo a piece. So really i was just going for something to get started, and i will buy a better module as soon as our "Economic Stimulas Check" comes in. .... but i agree the sounds are kinda gay, unless you spend the time ajusting all the midi parameters. I got my bass drum sample to sound good, you just gotta make sure you dont fall into the "ham slapping against a brick wall" sound trap, and instead use a sound that actually resembles your kit. It was hard to get one to sound like my bubinga kit, but alas, i found one that sounds good. And then there was metal.

p.s. hit me up man, we should catch up (arrowhead)

I'd rather get the triggerIO for $125, and buy a cheapo laptop for it. Create my own samples, or use Superior 2, EZdrummer, or BFD for the samples.

if you actually scored a dm5 on ebay for 125 bucks, you are very lucky.

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Apr 23,2008 7:13pm
any one have bfd, dkfh, ez drummer, drummergog, superior 2, or anything else of the like they can send my way? I got tons of shit I can trade for it. sX3, NUENDO, edirol orchestral, adobe audition, fruity loops, korg legacy bundle, waves diamond bundle, cubase 4, izotope, reason 3.0 etc etc etc

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Apr 23,2008 7:28pm
No shit, 125 is cheap.

I did. And it works great so far. (4 months.)

toggletoggle post by blue  at Apr 25,2008 9:25am
I paid $110 for my d4, and that's a good deal.

You scored that thing for like $50 less than they go for.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Apr 25,2008 9:49am
nice. I just kept bidding on them with a bid snipper at 125 till i got one.
