This is hardly old news to anyone here, but I'm really really goddamn sick of a few trends going on now with promoters. I'm not talking about real show promoters, I'm talking about the guys who come out of nowhere, and all of a sudden have 100 shows booked with bands no one has ever heard of. They're all $15 each, and the locals never get paid.

My band is going out on the road next weekend. We had a show booked in Indiana that I was really psyched for. Kids were writing us every day telling us how excited they were about it. From what a lot of people were telling us this show was going to draw a ton of kids. The promoter sent us an email on Myspace, and I could tell just from looking at his profile, and the way he was talking to us that he was one of those promoters. Promoters like that always talk to you with a stick up their ass about getting there 100 years early to load in. We're a touring band coming from another part of the country, and he knows that. We're not a bunch of 14 year olds playing Green Day covers from a garage down the street. The world isn't gonna end if we can't make it there by 4:00 to load in for a 7:00 show or whatever. Kids started telling us what a sketchy dude he was, and how he rips bands off. I don't care so much about money as I do about just playing a good show so I didn't care.

This show has been booked for months, and he waited until yesterday to tell the guys who set this show up for us (I won't mention the band name in case they don't want their name attached to this) that the show is going to be ages 15 - 20 only. Has anyone ever even heard of that??! I've never once in my life heard of a max age limit on a show.

no old people allowed in hardcore.

toggletoggle post by GoatCatalyst   at Apr 9,2008 10:36am
I'm having a hard time with that one. Link the roundmouth's myspace or it didn't happen.

toggletoggle post by Pires at Apr 9,2008 10:40am
how the hell do you put a cap on age? i understand 18 or 21 plus. but 15 to 20 year olds only? sounds like a homo crowd and promoter. i'm gonna start booking shows that have 40-65 only.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Apr 9,2008 10:43am
i'm going to book shows that only allow dead people.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Apr 9,2008 10:52am
I'm going to walk into that show as say "man, it's really dead in here"

Hahaha. What exactly are they going to card them with?

"Woah woah woah kid. This 6th grade report card is a fake. Come back when you learn to color between the lines!"

my favorite thing about promoters these days (im talking about the billion and one booking "companies" there are on myspace) is how they try to "look" professional on myspace and try to act professional by sending out a billion flyers and lineups and all these rules and all this shit and then you get to the show about 10 people show up because they booked NO locals and they go "oh sorry i cant get you the money i guaranteed you because no one came" like its your fault.

i have one major problem with this, if you call yourself a business you need to act like one. and definitely dont call it a guarantee if you cant guarantee anyone any money. any business owner will tell you that there are days that you loose money it just happens, the thing about a good business is that you are able to cover your losses with profits from another day. if you made 4-500 bucks at a show a month ago then you should have that money on you before you even show up to your next show so that you know you can pay your bands. if you keep putting on shows that no one goes to you need to do everyone a favor and stop booking shows.

even better than that is when you drive 8 hours in the rain to bangor, maine only to see the promoter let half the kids at the show sneak in for free and then say oh im sorry the show didnt do that well can i give you guys 50 bucks less than i guaranteed even though its gonna cost you about 100 bucks more than the guarantee to get home.

oh i could go on all day.

i think the moral of the story is that if you have started a booking company, a promotion company, a photography company, or even a band since myspace has become such a popular means of advertisement (lets say 2 years give or take, and its crappy useless advertisement at that), you should quit what your doing and go get a job. especially if you are under the age of 21. just because myspace exists and just because the whole world is telling you that you are free to do whatever you want doesnt mean that you can go ahead trying to act professional doing something that you have absolutely no experience or talent in.

well theres a place called the underground that actually draws if they put the right locals on it. weve played there twice both shows had at least 50-75 kids. its decent. we play maine quite a bit, most of the people that we meet up there are really laid back good people. just that one kid pissed us off.
