its not up on their site yet cause its in the May 08 issue but this is the review....

Dour Cursiva
Voices Through Wires
Hold True Records

Dour Times

The underground being what it is, all too often you find that new band armed with a debut album turns out to have been around for a while. Formed three years ago in Providence, RI, metalcore crew Dour Cursiva actually turn out to claim a further five years prior experience in other bands. Three plus five equals eight, which just so happens to be the number of tracks on their debut. It's at this point when a reviewer ought to be able to expect truly astonishing tracks in exchange for all that hard work, but that's not quite the case here.

For the better part of the first half of Voices Through Wires, Dour Cursiva deliver their self proclaimed "mixed bag of melodies, dissonances, polyrhythms and drones" with a frustrating lack of cohesion. Take the first pair of tracks "Pro Patria Mori" starts well, but derails its own momentum, getting in some good licks before the end, while "Carrier" starts flawed, but gets good riff going eventually. The ensuing numbers start to hint at the band's potential, but it's not until "Paint Kills People" and especially the paydirt track "Canals Are Not Rivers" that this is really fully realized, achieving a consistency in the chopped up riffing that could actually be considered good songwriting.

Lyrically, too, the band works in stream of consciousness fragments that don't really gel until the same track. More of a mishmash than math rock, the album shows plenty enough potential. If Dour Cursiva could resist the urge to follow the well-trod path to Dillinger Converge nerdcore heaven, it could well be that the next eight songs due from them might be something to shout out loud about a bit more loudly.

- Nick Terry

and with all that he gave the record a 6

well...we've written more songs than 8.

But D FOR DEGREE...woo

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Mar 25,2008 11:16am
there's honestly not a whole lot in this that I genuinely disagree with. We've already completely revamped our writing process. His tone is super-negative, but it's all good.

at least he gave it a 6. if you're going on a scale of 1-10, that's a pretty decent score.

academically speaking, 60 % = C-, D range.
alas, from a baseball perspective you're a shoe in for the hall of fame.

Note to self: Send fruit baskets out before the next album is reviewed.

IMO, you write songs over the span of 3 years, some people might think it's a disjointed effort.

In any case, I love our stuff, and I love the new stuff even more.

WATCH THIS SPACE!

yeah, that's true. it's hard to get something to really sound cohesive unless all the songs are written in short bursts over a short period of time. a song you wrote 2.5 years ago probably won't sound like a song you wrote 6 months ago.

yea this is pretty much what i would expect from anyone that knows anything about music. 6 out of 10 aint bad and i agree with most of what he has to say.

thanks sean for posting this up...did you actually type up the whole review from the mag?

yeah, my only beef is with the uselessness of the first paragraph.

Otherwise, it's tr00th
