i'm very uninitiated in the ways of Godflesh (my first introduction to JK Broadrick was with Napalm Death and I now listen to a lot more Jesu) and i only have "hymns" and "slavestate" on cd with all the remixes and shit.

as "slavestate" is kind of a throwaway i've been really digging "Regal" (if only for its place as the birthing of Jesu) and "White Flag". Fucking crushing shit.

I realize this is Godflesh at the end of their career so I think need to hear more. I really need Streetcleaner don't I?

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 25,2008 12:50pm
oh man, you are speaking my language. i love Slavestate, i guess you have to be a diehard fan to get a lot of his stuff. and you definitely need Streetcleaner. these are my favorite songs in no particular order:

Head Dirt
Christbait Rising
Ice Nerveshatter
Merciless
White Flag
Regal
Vampires
Love is A Dog From Hell
I Wasn't Born to Follow
Monotremata
Sterile Prophet
Angel Domain
Messiah
Body Dome Light
Black Boned Angel
Anthem
Bittersweet
Whose Truth is Your Truth
Avalanche Master Song
Wound
Might Trust Krusher
Frail

my two personal favorite albums are Streetcleaner and Songs of Love and Hate, but i really can't exclude every other album. i have yet to hear a song i don't like, or even kind of don't like.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 25,2008 12:57pm
i can't believe i forgot Slateman in that list. that song is incredible.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 25,2008 12:59pm
and Meltdown and Someone Somewhere Scorned. oh hell, i can't make a list, i can't get enough of every single song.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 25,2008 1:04pm
last weekend i ate some fungus and listened to Streetcleaner, when it got to Locust Furnace i felt like i was being beaten upside the head over and over and over when he was screaming "FURNACE! FURNACE! FURNACE!". i was handed a tape of that album when i was 16, and here it is almost 11 years later and i've never heard that album like that before. the thing with Godflesh is you probably won't really like it at first, you'll think its ok, but it will stick in your head and grow like a tumor.

haha awesome...i like things that do that.

"Hymns" is their weakest effort. IF you like that, then every other album should leave you shitting bricks.

A favorite Godflesh song is so hard to pinpoint, but here some all time faves of mine:

Cold World
Dead Head
Mighty Trust Crusher
Body Dome Light
Veins
Predominance
Frail
Black Boned Angel
The Internal

Every song is pretty genius. You really can't go wrong with any release.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 25,2008 1:19pm
in terms of the other material, yes Hymns is the weakest, but i can't exactly call it weak, it is incredible in its own right. i was listening to it the other day, and some of my favorite tunes are on it. but yes C.Dead is correct, you will most certainly shit bricks.

toggletoggle post by C.DEAD at Jan 25,2008 2:18pm
When I say weak, it just means weak in terms of their previous ouptut. The album is very uninspired and is the only album they ever did where I honestly didn't like a few a songs on it, opposed to me liking every single song on every single album before it. Though, it does have 3 very good songs on it and one of those is a hidden track.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 25,2008 3:17pm
fair enough. it was the precursor for Jesu, especially the hidden track. and Jesu. the song Anthem is fucking incredible.

toggletoggle post by C.DEAD at Jan 25,2008 3:34pm
"the song Anthem is fucking incredible"

Yes, incredible song.

c'mon, slavestate is no throwaway, although that song where he keeps screaming "JESUS, JESUS, JESUS..." is kinda funny.

personally i think jesu itself is one of broadricks weaker efforts... although i really liked the second album
i await the pile of shit that will be heaped upon me for making this statement

i finally got the Cold World EP yesterday, i am going to have to add Cold World to my list of songs.

toggletoggle post by niflheim at Feb 15,2008 1:26pm
Cold World is ok, the track Nihil is awesome. I believe it was on the Hideaway soundtrack. I think Godflesh performed it in the actual movie as well. Such a great band.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Feb 15,2008 1:28pm
yeah they perform the song in its entirety in Hideaway.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Mar 30,2009 10:43am
hahaha i started freaking out at Oasis when i heard Selfless. the same thing happened at Emperor in 07, they started playing Hymns and i was the only one going bonkers over it.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Mar 30,2009 10:45am
i went bonkers when frank zappa's "broken hearts are for assholes" started playing after motorhead's set at the palladium on the most recent US tour. everyone else just left the building except one dude who asked what the song was.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Mar 30,2009 10:56am
zappa is god

toggletoggle post by watchmaker666  at Mar 30,2009 3:01pm
Street cleaner is essential not just as a godflesh record but as a metal record in general. Total must have

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Mar 30,2009 3:20pm
Life is Easy has one of the best bass lines, on top of being one of the bleakest songs ever recorded. its way better than the Fall of Because version.
