mike: neat, looks like you are using a nice p&s. those things are very versatile. the second set have a lot better color/contrast than the second set. probably a different camera. The second set are better pictures because of that.

CNV: I love shooting over seabrook harbor. lots of flat water and the sun sets right over the towers if you are on the seabrook side. is that the plant over that island?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 31,2007 12:12pm
what do you have to 35mm lenses?
for what you want (insects) you just need a "sweet" macro lens, the camera doesn't matter, and some lighting (since macros usually require f/11+).
I have the lighting I need for macros but not the lens. Some day, I hope to own either the 105mm VR f/2.8 or the 60mm f/2.8

I hate when sites like that won't allow you to hotlink images. I just bought a Zenfolio account which allows it and has unlimited storage for $40/year, I just need to upload everything to it.

toggletoggle post by theaccurseddrummer  at Nov 1,2007 1:53pm
I think it's an issue with the privacy functions. I have all of my pages unlisted so that people can't order prints through Picasa without checking with me (I had about 70 pics printed and didn't even know it...) so I set up an album that was public with one pic from each series and made a slideshow. Can't post it here though, Picasa still isn't RTTP friendly. I'll grab some pics from the Death Wish MySpace.

I'll have to check into that & figure out how to do it. I figured most of the problem stemmed from my setting the photo albums as unlisted/private, but then the public pics wouldn't work either. Thanks for the tip Rev.

Dude, I'm 32 and feel EXACTLY the same way. I skimped and bought the best camera I could afford because there's no way I could justify buying one for $2600 (at the time anyway.) I never intended to be a photographer, I just do it for fun. It kills me when someone out there writes me in appreciation for what I do because the whole time I'm sitting on my computer drooling over the incredible shots that get posted by the Rev on RTTP or shit from Tom's site or Carina's, or Bruce from ZeroFlesh, or Pia, I could literally go on forever just about the great photographers in NE, I'm beyond flattered and point them toward the aforementioned photogs and tell them that's where it's really at. It's still fun as all hell though! Get into it for that I guess. I don't know shit about shit, even after 3 semesters in black & white film photography, especially now that I shoot all digital (wicked smaht of me...) so I just appreciate all this great art and have fun doing my strange little thing.

Agreed, the fun of it more than makes up for feeling like a total retard when looking at threads like this or the pretentious douchebags in my class trying to explain why they took a bunch of photos of their faggy roommate looking sad in the park.

Ugh, dude, I was in class with a girl who took three 36exp rolls of film of her friend's face. The assignment was to take an entire roll of film, 36 photos of one inanimate object (a face is not inanimate, but she was an idiot.) They all had the same gay blur effect that she got swishing the camera around with the shutter open for a bit longer than normal, and they all looked terrible. I took 36 pictures of a big, tacky, as-seen-on-TV knife, most of which also just happened to have my sister in law dressed as a dead hooker bleeding out in the background. The knife was always the sharpest focus and the central point of the picture. I shot it as a joke. 24 shoots later...

Awesome. What did your teacher say? The bloody handprint on her shoulder is the perfect touch.

toggletoggle post by theaccurseddrummer  at Nov 2,2007 12:48pm
She loved it and told me that this was my "thing," that I should keep shooting these the way that I do and never stop. It was very weird. I expected her to give me the "Awww, come on..." look, but it was the total opposite! She's an older lady, wicked fucking cool and open minded, and to my surprise, she got the biggest kick out of it. I have more fun shooting this stuff than anything else. It's all business for the 20-30 minutes I end up actually maneuvering and taking pics, but the rest of the time, setup, makeup, building the scene or whatever, it's a total blast.

that's the real issue now. the dynamic range that digital/monitors can display is only like 12 stops. film can show what 15+? some day. you can approximate it with HDR. getting the right curve down for film scanning can take a bit of work.

Here are some pictures that I took in Vermont a couple of months ago with my crappy camera.

Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, VT

This giant sphere isn't entirely attached to the rest of the stone. It rolls around if you push up against it.

This guy died in the 1800s and was afraid of being buried alive. There is a window at the top of the hill that is supposed to be directly above his head. The glass is too thick to see into his grave, but it's still creepy to look down.

Beneath this window, there is a dead guy looking back at you.

This place had a sign on the door that said, "We have Wi-Fi".
