I'm interested in them. Tell me what I should be listening to from them.

toggletoggle post by CNV at Sep 24,2007 1:00am
They are satanic

It's times like these you have to ask yourself

What would jesus do if he thought a satanic band was cool?

toggletoggle post by ConquerTheBaphomet  at Sep 24,2007 1:01am
You should really just give the act up, dude. You're not offending anyone.

Oh, brother.

my favorite is kveldssanger, but i like everything they've ever done, metal and nonmetal.

toggletoggle post by blast. at Sep 24,2007 1:40am
i like all things they've done and im new so the opinion doesnt count so much, but kveldssanger, nattens, and svidd neger are my favorites.

toggletoggle post by CNV at Sep 24,2007 1:40am
Cmon man, are you reall going to Conquer the Baphomet or are you going to buy a god damn Ulver album?

Sheesh, kid's today

Their first album, 'Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler' is really folky style black metal; really good shit, probably my favorite from them.

The second album 'Kveldssanger' is apparently an all acoustic folk album, which I've never heard, but is supposed to be excellent nonetheless.

The third, and probably most popular one, 'Nattens Madrigal' is extremely raw and violent black metal with almost no "clean" singing/guitars. Still really great shit though; this one is rumored to have been recorded in the middle of the woods, but where are you going to plug in an electric guitar in the woods?

Since then, their albums haven't been metal so much as more electronic/ambient type shit.

those 3 albums are awesome....i heard that for the 'nattens' album, guitars were done through one of those little 3 inch 'practice amps', where you just plug in and there is a speaker...i could see that...the ulver/immortal split is pretty cool...the ulver tracks sound like they are using acoustic guitars with distortion pedals.
great band....play nattens madrigal at my funeral....

first 3 > everything else

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Sep 24,2007 8:47am
I like the metal stuff when I'm in the mood for that kind of stuff. I reeeeeeally like the non-metal stuff. The new album actually leaked and it rules.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Sep 24,2007 9:27am
The first three albums (and the demo) are metal, everything else isn't. No one album they've ever released sounds anything whatsoever like any other album they've ever done, and they're all amazing. The only common thread is that they're all very dark, and deal with their whole "lycanthropic satanism" theme. Highly, highly recommended; if you've never heard them, you've got hours and hours of musical discovery ahead of you.

Yet another advantage.

the cover of Black Sabbath's "Solitude" on the latest album is perfect.

Nattens Madrigal is one of the most violent things ever recorded. i heard Blood Inside and i can't say i was turned away by it, it was just a lot to take in the first time considering what i knew about old Ulver.

personally i think Kristoffer Rygg (garm of Borknagar/early-ulver) has one of the best tonal voices ive ever heard. i havent heard anything of his i havent liked. A Marriage of Heaven and Hell is an awesome album, so is Blood Inside and A Quick Fix of Melancholy. I just got the new one, havent listened to it much yet, but from ive heard it sounds good.

I can listen to "Lycantropen Themes" all day long. And "Perdition City" is pretty much the soundtrack to "Sin City" (the comic book, not the movie).

toggletoggle post by ConquerTheBaphomet  at Sep 24,2007 2:48pm
I've downloaded Shadows of The Sun and Bergtatt.

Thanks guys.

You're welcome

I'm listening to stuff from Blood Inside and I'm liking what I'm hearing. Very nice atmospheric stuff.

toggletoggle post by swamplorddvm  at Sep 24,2007 7:28pm
Not a fan of blood inside. Maybe I need to give it another listen.

Teachings in Silence is an incredibly warped take on music.

toggletoggle post by vein_water   at Sep 24,2007 10:57pm
When I interview Garm, he seemed like he was more in ripping off Coil than trying to be the "Future Sound of Music." I understand that he grew up on the experimental gods Holy Toy when he was a boy in Norway, but Ulver put out some great original music until Perdition City. Although once in a while they've released monumental pieces of music. For instance, Lykantropen, The Silence EPs, and I liked the 1st Decade of The Machines release.

I guess it proves people have a time and place in this world. Then poof they're gone

Get stoned; listen to in the dark. Repeat.

Bergtatt is my favorite, by far. It's about a girl that's being stalked by trolls in the forest. A big chunk of track three is actually the girl running through the woods with a distant sounding piano. Kveldssanger is amazing. if you can't go to sleep, pop it in and you'll doze off quickly. Nattens Madrigal is good but that's been covered already and Vargnatt, the demo is quite hilarious at points but still pretty damn good and definitely worth the listen.

OLD shit, from Vargnatt. More potential than anything else, here, but you can see where they're going with it. (They're like, 16 in these.)
