I'm not experienced with Adobe photoshop or Illustrator at all. Someone please write this book for me, and please make it have a section for death metal logos.

i taught a class on those applications, mostly photoshop, but i taught some illustrator too.

the pen tool can be a good spiky illegible logo maker.

remember to close your paths though.

Don't waste your money. I can explain it all to you for free.

Step 1: Type out the band name in all caps. (Serif font optional.)

Step 2: Scribble over the lines in the letters, making sure that they all pretty much run together, and make lots of wavy little pointy squiggles skewing off all over the place.

Example 1: Not quite there yet; this is sufficient if your band is only 95% metal (or if you're playing a battle of the bands at your high school and the music teacher insists on being able to read your logo).

Step 4: Profit!

Hahahahaha, once again I am floored and humbled by your logo abilities, Steve.

Immortal13: Try to look up some tutorials online and study the "Read Me" section of Illustrator and you may get a better idea without having to spend the money. Plus, all you really need in Illustrator is the pen tool so you can vectorize a logo and make it look extra sharp with crisp or smooth lines...well, as far as logos go, the pen is all you need.
