Brazil's Roadie Crew (web site) and Argentina's Jedbangers (web site) magazines recently collaborated on a very special story on SOULFLY/ex-SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera. In addition to arranging a lengthy interview with Max conducted by Thiago Sarkis and Fernando Ibáńez, the two publications invited several world-renowned musicians who witnessed and/or toured with Cavalera in the early years of his career to talk about his importance to the heavy metal scene and to reveal interesting stories about him and SEPULTURA. This ultimate tribute to the most important and influential South American metal musician and band ever is the cover story in the brand new issue of Roadie Crew (which is out on the newsstands right now) and will be a highlight in Jedbangers' next issue, which will be released in two weeks (featuring MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine on the cover).

Here is what some of heavy metal's most renowned musicians have had to say about Max Cavalera and SEPULTURA:

Lemmy Kilmister (MOTÖRHEAD):

"Max Cavalera is a very important man. He with the rest of SEPULTURA were the first Brazilian band to play outside of Brazil, and gain a large, fanatical following. We met them in 1991 when we played together, and we soon realized they were arrogant sons of bitches same as we were! Since then we've played with Max, SEPULTURA, then SOULFLY, and with SEPULTURA featuring Derrick, the big lad. They always put on a great show, the fans go crazy, and they keep pushing the odds. Luck to them."

Vinnie Paul Abbott (HELLYEAH, ex-PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN):

"Max is metal! We had the pleasure of having both SEPUTURA and SOULFLY touring with PANTERA and every night they gave us a run for the money. Max writes intense lyrics and delivers them with conviction and passion. His riffs are crushing and he has always had a great metal guitar sound. In short, Max is a metal god and he lives and breathes it every day. He and his bands put Brazil on the heavy metal map and brought a new tribal feel to the scene. So, here's to Max: 'dente preto my brother!!!'"

Mille Petrozza (KREATOR):

"I've known Max since '85. He was my first penpal from Brazil. Back then his name was Max Possessed and his brother Igor drew a self-made SEPULTURA t-shirt for me. Max is still a good friend who hasn't changed a bit over the years. If we run into each other on festivals nowadays it's always cool and relaxed. Max is one of metal's most creative and down-to-earth characters. A living legend!"

Kelly Shaefer (ATHEIST, NEUROTICA, UNHEARD):

"Max Cavalera is a fucking living legend, easily one of the most influential characters to ever play metal. When we first met years ago during the recording of 'Beneath the Remains', I was fortunate enough to work with him on a tune called 'Stronger Than Hate'. I wrote some lyrics, and helped him with his pronunciations, etc., because at that point he was not speaking English nearly as well as he does today. When I first heard the finished product, I was blown away at the quality of the music of SEPULTURA: they had great riffs, massive drumming, and it was quite memorable. I think since then, he has influenced many, many bands, and many in today's metal scene owe him a great deal of gratitude. I have maximum respect for Max, and all his work including SOULFLY. I tip my metal hat to you Max, you're a bad-ass mutherfucker!!!"

L.G. Petrov (ENTOMBED):

"Max and SEPULTURA were the ones that opened the doors for many bands from South America, and they got the rest of the world's attention with their full on thrash metal! I love Max's aggressive and energetic vocals. Personally he is one of my favorite singers of all time."

David Vincent (MORBID ANGEL):

"I've always had good thoughts of Max. I'm not only a contemporary and a friend, but also a fan. From SEPULTURA's 'Morbid Vision' death metal days to the innovation of SOULFLY, Max forged a path that in my opinion has given tremendously to the world of music. His early successes helped introduce the world to many new Brazilian artists who may not have had the same opportunities previously. I've seen the 'drink 'till you drop' days of the early 1990s and now the balanced, spiritual plateau he has achieved today, and Max remains a true star. From myself and the rest of MORBID ANGEL: 'Obrigado meu Amigo'!"
