I find your lack of faith disturbing

Honestly, you won't find a bigger fan of the OT, but I don't consider it sci-fi. It's just mega-epic space opera.
Heinlein, Clarke, Asimov, sci-fi these are. Pseudo-religious psionics? Heh! Effortless hyperspace travel? Heh! A sci-fi fan craves not these things. |
yes, its sci-fi. the end. |
Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good beer at your side, kid. |
I have a real bad feeling about this. |
that's no moon.....that's a space station. |

"I have a real bad feeling about this. "
I love how they say that in each of the good movies. |

C-3PO: [to R2-D2] This is all your fault
How many times it THAT said in any of the movies? |
Super nerds have tried to tell me it is science-fantasy no matter how hard I argue that I don't even care abouts Star Wars. My ladyfriend is okay with calling it sci-fi and she is the biggest SW nerd I have ever met so that's good enough for me. I did not read this thread. |
15 1/2 boners and a dead homophone... er.. what the fuck is a homophone. |

Yes. Star Wars nerd, not sci-fi nerd. Therefore unqualified to comment. |
I've come from beyond the grave to give you all an important message. This shit's Tolkien with spaceships. NOT SCI-FI. Fucking "PEW PEW" noises in a vaccuum, I mean SRSLY. PEACE I'M OUT. |
if star wars is ripping any one off its Frank Herbert's "Dune" |
very interesting correlations in there. also take into account that lucas had many other influences. like tolkien, lucas took much from mythology and religion. tolkien took almost all of his shit directly from Nordic myths. to say that any of these are original is rediculous. |
oh ya Tolkien is just Norse tales with Christian overtones but if you read dune you can see it is a huge influence on star wars great story too, but Frank Herbert was a dick and didnt like heavy metal and he wouldnt even let Iron Maiden name the song they wrote about the books after the book |
Star Wars is a documentary, and the events happened in real time. |

That is awesome.
Yes Star Wars is truth. It obviously happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

ha, just noticed the emperor on the cowbell. |

Bumping this thread for some unknown reason.
Star Wars is a fantasy/ epic space drama, like DYA said.
What Lucas did is take traditional Medival elements (knights, princess, chivalry) and combine them in a psuedo-scifi environment that takes place in the PAST, in a galaxy far far away.
Pure genius. Too bad the new Star Wars movie (specifically the 1st and 2nd) seemed more orientated at a younger audience.
Star Wars is way more fantasy than sci-fi. |
I read star wars books about 2 a week. I have read about 35 of them now in the last 4 months. (obviously my reading speed has fluxuated) The more i read, the more into it i get. The "New Jedi Order" series is fantastic. Better than any of the movies. |
I just got all happy thinking he was posting again and then I saw the year. Booo. |

yes, from every english professor on earth, ever. every time I hear him and Star Wars mentioned in the same breath, i slouch. |

oh my god this rules so fucking much!!!
hah.
anyway
i don't care if it's sci-fi or not, what i do care about is that Episode 3 and the Original Trilogy are 4 amazing movies. |
a common misconception is that star wars takes place in the future. you look at the beginning on every movie it states "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away...". its a fairy tale. its every greatest story ever told all in one. |
of course it's science fiction, sheesh! |
space opera fantasy drama or science fiction? That's the million dollar question. of course it all depends on what one considers a science fiction trait. most Trekkies I know think star wars is fantasy.. Could the Trekkies be right? |
Bump for Ark.
This question is unanswerable. |
So you agree that it's a space opera fantasy? |
Space opera is adventure science fiction set in outer space or on distant planets, where the emphasis is on action rather than either science or characterization. The conflict is heroic, and typically on a large scale. Space opera is sometimes used pejoratively, to describe improbable plots, absurd science, and cardboard characters. But it is also used nostalgically, and modern space opera may be an attempt to recapture the sense of wonder of the golden age of science fiction. The pioneer of this subgenre is generally recognized to be Edward E. (Doc) Smith, with his Skylark and Lensman series. Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space series, Peter F. Hamilton The Dreaming Void, The Night's Dawn and Pandora's Star series, and the immensely popular Star Wars trilogies are newer examples of this genre. -wikipedia |
i.e. i think it has way more in common with lord of the rings than dune. |
Hmmm, nice that someone clarified that |
although it is technically sci-fi lucas borrowed so much from so many other genres its ridiculous. you can see spaghetti westerns, 40s-60s japanese samurai films, old sci-fi serials from the 30s and 40s, religious undertones and fairy tales all put together into one brilliant film series. it really is the "greatest story ever told" all put together in 6 films. |
It is only a matter of time before this descends into rule 34 star wars
Where the hell is Dwellingsickness? |
Only Stanisław Lem is real
So I love the real trilogy just as much as anyone else... After recently rewatching them and studying them to see if there was anything I've ever missed, there is one that stands out the most and is perhaps the biggest flaw in all of Star Wars: Han Solo's hair.
You see, when he was frozen in carbonite with the tibanna gas at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, all is good.
In Return of the Jedi, when he is unfrozen, his hair is different. Who the fuck gave him a hair cut when he was frozen in carbonite? This makes it unrealistic.
I can never view the original trilogy the same. |
the freezing process caused his hair to shrink back. How dare you question anything about Han Solo. |
AND THEY ARE TIBANNA GAS MINES. GAWL. |
wait, that's not even what you meant. you don't freeze with Tibanna gas. GAWL. |
My ladyfriend is okay with calling it sci-fi and she is the biggest SW nerd I have ever met so that's good enough for me. I did not read this thread. |
she's a girl. it doesn't mean she is wrong, but she's still wrong. |
Want to cripple Bespin's economy? Slaughter all the beldons. No beldons, no tibanna gas. No tibanna gas, no Bespin. |

Doesn't it go back to normal later in the film though? |
Nah, I think it was just a difference in styles between the years the films were released. Same thing with a New Hope.
I just thought it was funny he was frozen in carbonite and you can tell Han Solo (ford) clearly aged and got a hair cut. |
I can only really watch Empire anymore. I don't think the other movies are really all that good. Empire is the only one that stood my test of time. |
Pppppppppppppppppffffffffffttttttttttttttttttttttttt |
well you know what i mean, i have them memorized anyway. I just watched Seven Samurai yesterday and Obi-Wan's character is Samurai #1 to the letter.
Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars. I'm getting the widescreen fixes for Knights of the Old Republic I and II to play through. KOTOR I is one of my favorite all time games. I've never even touched II. |
Me either. I was playing the first one the other night but it's too much to swallow right now. Too time consuming. |
The phantom menace is the worst piece of crap ever. The only highlight was Liam.
The Gungan king is the same character as the Goblin King in the hobbit. The movie needs more pubes. |

The Phantom Menace at least has the pod race and Darth Maul. Attack of the Clones is the shits. Soooooo boring. Even the name of the movie sucks. |
The pod race was atrocious. |
Even the name of the movie sucks. |
I was able to kid myself into believing I liked Phantom Menace because it was within the high of any new Star Wars movie existing at all. I slowly let go of that contrived aura over the next couple years and a few more viewings of the movie at home. Seeing that first trailer for Attack and coming to the realization that they had actually decided to give the movie that name was the moment where I consciously had to face that this new trilogy just wasn't bringing it. |
the only good thing the first 3 movies brought was the first Lego Star Wars, which is a lot of fun. |
