name 5 essential traits that put together a GREAT grind band?

here's my list:
1. RANDOMNESS
2. Change tempos often
3. Crushing speed
4. Technical bass player which you can actually HEAR
5. Aren't afraid to mix in groovy rhythms

(my favorite grind bands: Cephalic Carnage, Impetigo, Soilent Green, Animal Fucking Rampage, Leech Eater, Rotten Sound, Neuraxis,
Circle of Dead Children, Pig Destroyer, Cliteater, ...fuck i'm dead, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Lord Gore, Brutal Truth, Carcass, Tower of Rome, Nasum, Cryptopsy)

i wasn't aware neuraxis was grind...

and some of the bands you named don't even have bass players.

Top 5 qualities in a good grind band
1-5. Not sounding overly metal

Metal grind <<<<<<<<< punk grind

Top 5 grind bands:
1. Magrudergrind
2. Cripple Bastards
3. Phobia
4. Bathtub Shitter
5. Blood Duster

Other honorable mentions: Sanity's Dawn, Yacopsae, Fubar, Rompeprop, Cliteater, Throwing Shrapnel, Insect Warfare, Plutocracy, Repulsion, Insult(from Holland), Benumb, Birdflesh, Jigsore Terror, Machetazo, Pretty Little Flower, 50/50, Discordance Axis, Fetus Eaters, Sayyadina, Suffering Bastard, Swallowing Shit, Terrorizer

Two bands I don't consider full blown grindcore but are definitely awesome and worth mentioning are Despise You(lumped into powerviolence but has obvious metal influence) and Green Beret(has keyboards, but it's no scenester shit!)

I've lost interest in most grindcore, I guess mostly because I don't hear too many bands who can execute it effectively, and end up just coming off as annoying rather than full of chaotic hatred and rage. I do enjoy some of the genre's pioneers though (Terrorizer, 80's-early 90's era Napalm Death, Repulsion, Assuck, etc...)

Some qualities I like in a grind band:
1. Being noisy, but keeping a tight playing unit as well; staying on beat, starting/stopping on time, etc...
2. Simplicity. Don't get all experimental and funky on me. Grindcore should be loud, short, fast and to-the-point. You want to show off how technical you can play? Start a prog metal band.
3. Don't overuse blastbeats. Blasting is pretty much a staple of grind, but I find that a regular fast thrash beat is much more effective and less annoying than blasting.

I know that's only 3 but I can't think of any more.

Exactly. I've always thought grind was lowbrow music and some of the stuff people are calling grind(Cephalic Carnage a grind band? Come on now...) pisses me off.

I prefer short songs too. 30 second-1 minute range is ideal, but it's cool to go shorter or longer once in a while.

Since when are Cryptopsy and Neuraxis grind bands?

Circle of Dead Children
Phobia
Throwing Shrapnel
Quest of Aidance
Regurgitate
Uphill Battle
Vulgar Pigeons
Vomitorial Corpulence

Some good ole grind stuff.

I wouldn't really consider CoDC a grind band either, too metal. Not bad though...

I also wouldn't really consider ANb or FID grind bands either because of the drum machines(not to mention they sound extremely metal anyway). When you lean too far into punk you stop being grind, I think it works the same way with metal. Playing blast beats does not make you a grind band.

toggletoggle post by ConquerTheBaphomet  at Jun 13,2007 12:20am
CoDC does have a lot of death metal influence but I would consider them a grind band before a death metal band.

toggletoggle post by Dwellingsickness at Jun 13,2007 3:08am
I guess people have different ideas on what grind is, because I wouldn't consider half the bands listed GRIND. Some are Grind, some are Grindcore, Some are Goregrind.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 13,2007 7:40am
people mention blasts, but one essential part of a grindcore band (re: napalm death, shitstorm, magrudergrind) is punk drumming. grindcore is an off-shoot of punk/hardcore so they mix in almost 2-step drumming.

I want to know where the hell people got the idea that "grind" and "grindcore" are two different things.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Jun 13,2007 10:46am
first off, i thought a few of the same things as xmikex when reading the original post, haha. secondly, i want the same answer as lamp does to how grind and grindcore are different. it's always been apparent to me that people just say grind because they're too lazy to say grindcore, or just figured everyone would know what they're talking about.

bands like CODC and cephalic carnage have been labelled grind for years probably because bands of that nature are easily lumped into the grind category than anything else. CODC i would consider deathgrind, whether you want to call it a genre or not. there are so many different ways to make music these days that some bands just label themselves as grind so they either don't have to come up with something retarded like "hyperblasting slammified gore groovegrind" or don't have to really think about what it is that they're playing. cephalic carnage falls more into the experimental category for me these days, especially with the last few releases. this could go on forever, but i have to get my oil changed.

So are "metal" and "metalcore" the same then?

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jun 13,2007 3:24pm
they might as well be, the line is so blurred now. "metal" needs a new word because the word "metal" is horribly obnoxious.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Jun 13,2007 3:32pm edited Jun 13,2007 3:34pm
What you guys think is metalcore sure isn't fucking metalcore to me, I'll tell you that much.

Metalcore to me basically means metallic hardcore, hardcore being punk of course. So when I think of "metalcore" I think of Converge, Rorschach, Deadguy, Integrity, blah blah. Clearly distinguishable from metal. A lot of the stuff that gets called metalcore(As I Lay Dying, Killswitch, Lamb of God, etc) is all just pop emo college-rock metal to me and shouldn't be taken seriously or given a second thought.

Saying that grind and grindcore are two different terms is fucking retarded. Taking the core out of grindcore is basically taking all the punk influence out of it, where it basically becomes metal. Goregrind/pornogrind/cybergrind/deathgrind, whatever it may be...it's all really just metal in the end and most of it has very little to do with grindcore if you ask me, and I think the suffix "grind" should be left out of it altogether(ie, just calling it gore metal, porno metal, cyber metal[drum machine shit], death metal). Core to me is a punk suffix, always has been, always will be, and to see so many jock metal fucks and other assholes stealing it and putting it on their own third-rate bands makes me sick.

As a disclaimer, I'll note that I'm writing this from the perspective of a punk kid, not a metalhead, so I'm sure on this forum full of metalheads, my views will be the minority.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Jun 13,2007 3:34pm

grind=punk riffs, punk drumming, blastbeats, screaming, yelling and/or growling, maybe a little feedback

sorry, heavy bass has nothing to do with grind.... in grind bass is usually
1.in the background, barely able to be heard
2.there to keep time with the drummer
3.heavily distorted
4.only heard during guitar breaks
5.non-existant
6.2 or more of the above

pretty much since their inception, cephalic has termed themselves 'hydro grind.''

and soilent green is a grind band with southern metal parts.

I feel tempted to make a rebuttal about bass/drum bands but the only thing I can really think of worth a shit in that category is No Comply's half of their split with Christmess and that's not very grindy anyway.

toggletoggle post by niflheim at Jan 4,2008 4:13pm
Soilent Green do slide riffs once in a while but not enough to label them a grind band. They can get pretty technical with their time changes. Grind is defintiely rooted in punk, just sped up and more pissed off. I forget which member of Soilent Green was in Mule Skinner, but their album "Abuse" is violent grind/death

since when do 'slide riffs' make a grind band?

this just in: the allman brothers created grindcore.

toggletoggle post by niflheim at Jan 4,2008 4:22pm
Uh, I'm not talking about sliding in that sense haha. But the simplistic riffing style of punk, only sped up. Power chords just going from one part of the fretboard to the next. I'm not a guitarist so I'm not going to claim that I can better describe this, but take your typical punk riff, speed it up, and thats a grind riff. So your definition of a grind riff would be what?

toggletoggle post by niflheim at Jan 4,2008 4:23pm
Soilent Green definitely have grind parts but theyre not grind purists. Their music contain elements of death metal, southern metal, as well. Thus making them more of a hybrid style not soley "grindcore"

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Jan 4,2008 4:28pm
I've never heard the term "slide riff" either and I've been playing guitar for six years, you're going to have to explain where you pulled that one from.

toggletoggle post by cav nli at Jan 4,2008 4:30pm
not one band mentioned on this whole thread is "real" grind, discuss....

toggletoggle post by Mike_Giallo   at Jan 4,2008 4:31pm
I thought a "slide riff" involves sliding. We call those football riffs.

toggletoggle post by niflheim at Jan 4,2008 4:34pm edited Jan 4,2008 4:41pm
Just because you never heard the term doesn't mean it hasn't been applied to describe it before. It's like when most people say they dont know what a skank beat is, so its called either a "down beat" or "thrash beat" (kick - snare - kick - snare). It's simple to grasp... Once again, have you heard punk before? They just take their hands, go back and forth on the fretboard rapidly. Go really fast and it almost creates a blur. Like the hand is sliding up and down the freboard. Ever heard Napalm Death's From Enslavement To Obliteration? It's the definitive grindcore album. What are those riffs except punk riffs on speed? I'm not saying "slide riffing" is the technical term for whatever it would be, just a way of describing it, the way it looks when played.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Jan 4,2008 4:43pm
I know what you're talking about now, I just didn't know it had a specific term. I was basically just asking where you heard it.

toggletoggle post by niflheim at Jan 4,2008 4:47pm edited Jan 4,2008 4:48pm
A friend of mine who is a grind connoseuir introduced me to that term about 11 years ago. It's not the specific term; you could probably come up with other terms to describe the style. That one just happened to stick. Not being a guitarist, I couldn't really describe it any other way.
