“Last night [Thursday, May 10] marked the end of the line for Mike Justian with UNEARTH. There are many reasons why we decided it was time to move on without him, but we are not in the business of airing dirty laundry. We will say that we grew apart as individuals and as musicians and the split will be best for both the band and Mike.
“In true UNEARTH fashion, we will continue on without skipping a beat. We are pleased and honored to say that Gene Hoglan of STRAPPING YOUNG LAD is filling in for the rest of our tour with DIMMU BORGIR, DEVILDRIVER and KATAKLYSM. He will take the stage for the first time with us tonight in Vancouver, B.C. Gene is an unreal musician and has learned a set in extremely short notice. We cannot thank him enough for lending his skills to our band for this tour.
“Mike is an amazing drummer and will surely turn up in another band soon. We traveled the world with him, shared some of the best experiences of our lives and can call him a brother forever. It was just time for both parties to split, plain and simple. We wish him the best of luck with all of his future endeavors.
“All of our upcoming touring will go on as scheduled.”
figures the best thing about this band goes away... |

wow... granted, he was never really "in" the band. |
I'm waiting for one day when some band is like "fuck that asshole, we got rid of him because he was a piece of shit who couldn't play to save his life". |
i doubt youll ever hear that, cus he could drum his way out of anything. |
he was playing well under his potential in unearth.
but i don't see Gene Hoglan doing this...
even stevie wonder could see this one coming. mike was a cocky assfuck. |

he was referencing to how whenever a band kicks a guy out they always are kind about it rather than calling them a gay fag who sucks.
he's a beyond technical machine. a monster drummer that had to play sloppier in unearth that in other bands. I really hope he leads a band now. hopefully something local and crazy. the reason he's out is probably $$ and personality. he was never really "in" this band and didn't ever seem to hang out with anyone in the band. talking with other bands that he'd been in, he can be rather difficult to tour with. drummers come in two breeds, messed in the head (but an amazing drummer) or shitty. the only counter point is probably derek roddy. |
some cool studio projects with him and random dudes would be great. either that or he drums for ANb |
good, he deserves better even if he is a dick head to work with. |
Wonder if he will go with CSDO now .He is their fill in all the time. |
probably not greg suits them perfectly.
on another note, drumming one unearth show pays more than any of us make in a week. even you, Wellington Underbite. |
i always thought he was better in a band like the red chord |
Unearth is dumb for parting with Mike. that kid is a phenomenon behind the kit.
I've jammed a couple of times with mike a while back, like back when he was with CSDO & TRC full time, and we had a good time just jamming some random tunes. I hope he finds a band that's right for him. he's a machine, and plays as such |
He was good with Hassan I Sabbah. Unearth is gay. |

Duh -- his loafers got so light from being in Unearth, that he literally floated away. |

I'm like some sort of special hybrid: shitty and mentally defective. |
wow i cant believe they got Gene Hoglan. that is far behind his ability. |
i read in an interview that devin is done with strapping young lad [at least for a while] and his own side project to focus on recording/ being a producer. |
so, Unearth needs a drummer eh???
*taps fingertips together and stares sinsterly at them* |
don't make me like them again moe. I can't handle it. |
I wonder if Mike actually has a different taste in style...
I certainly believe he fit perfectly with Unearth... listen to his playing on the last album, in particular Impostors Kingdom and Bled Dry (If not all the songs). The interesting thing is we can see how well they write songs as a group on III: In the Eyes of Fire because that's the only album they truly contributed together in the creation vice how Mike was putting the rest of the puzzle pieces together in The Oncoming Storm... kind of subbing in.
Damn... I've seen bands lose a big "play maker" before... it sucks
Too bad he wasn't a permanent member! |
Mike played drum parts that other members wrote on drum programming software. He had no creative input. I'm sure they'll sound exactly the same next album. |
I'm glad I got to see one of the last shows Mike did with Unearth.
Can't wait to see them with Gene Hoglan. It's so weird to think about it. |
