Sully Erna, the lead singer of the hard rock band Godsmack, was involved in a crash Wednesday night that left a young woman critically injured and backed up traffic in the southbound lanes of Interstate 93 during the evening commute.

Salvatore "Sully" Erna, 38 was driving his Hummer H3 and rear-ended a Toyota Camry near the ramp to Route 213 east at 7 p.m., state police said. The Camry then lunged forward and rear-ended a stopped Honda Odyssey in the chain reaction crash, state police said.

Investigators said Lindsay Taylor, 25, who was a passenger in the Camry, was critically hurt in the collision. She was first taken to Lawrence General Hospital and later airlifted to a Boston hospital for further treatment, state police said.

Methuen firefighters used the jaws-of-life to free Taylor and the Camry driver, Eric Sargent, 31, of Haverhill, from the car.

Neither Sargent not the Odyssey driver, Maureen White, 41, of Londonderry, N.H., were injured, police and firefighters said.

Sully Erna did not return our calls from The Gauntlet.
