is it a single coil or a bucker in the neck pick up? I can't remember what those have off the top of my head.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Apr 7,2007 11:45pm
sorry, bucker action.

for what you are looking for EMG's are not normally the ticket, but the closest I personally think you'd get with EMG is the 85. It's darker and smoother than the 81 and seems more "full". Great neck pick up, but I still think you could find better passives for that job.

K thx. I think I should just get a guitar more apt for that style.

I fear the emg in the neck wont be what I am looking for, and have to start over anyway.

that may be a good idea. I don't know about your budget but the ESp eclipse (I think ES400?) is a damn good guitar for the price. Switch it to passives, sell the EMG's and let them pay for the passives and maybe have a few bucks left over.

Well its not for metal, so I may end up getting a Strat again.
I need the silk and cream of a single coil neck pickup.
Maybe throw a hot rail in the bridge.
I dunno...any more suggs?
On the basis of Rock guitar, capable of clean cleans, creamy solos, and distorted bridge.

I've tried the 85, 60 and 81 in the neck in a few guitars and so far going 81 bridge 81 neck has been my favorite. The 85 might be more 'full' but it's also packed with loads more bass, the 81 in neck feels like a mix between 85/60, giving me a clear solid tone for sweeping and not making the lower notes sound like ass, the 85 tends to do that. The 60 had less output than both of them and overall didn't match the sound I was looking for

i don tknow anything about guitars and i know emg!=creamy

The 81 is actually very creamy in the neck and sounds the way a neck pickup ought to sound. The 85 in the neck is too muddy, and the 60 in the neck just sounds like a second bridge pickup.

If you don't like the 81 in the neck, then it might be hard for you to find one, But I would recomend checking out and EMG 60a.

It's a 60 but with alnico magnets instead of ceramics. In the neck it sounds somewhere between the 85 and 81

also, I believe EMG makes a single coil in a humbucker housing to fit guitars with humbucker routing. I'll haveto chime back in witht he model number later.

Thank you guys for the help....
Im still contemplating.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Apr 8,2007 9:49am
It makes sense that the 81 would be best, cutting the mud, but being in the neck position making it smoother.
Artists sweep descripion is exactly what I was wondering about.

The single in hum housing = EMG=H.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Apr 8,2007 10:03am
ahhh k thx....that may be a perfect solution.

I just revamped my RGT42. I pulled an EMG 60 out of an old Guild that I had and put it in the bridge. Not as harsh as the 81, quite a bit warmer, but will still squeal easy on the pinch harmonics. Me like.

I remember that Red Guild.....u put in the bridge?

Get a 1984 CreamNeck series EMG... yeah I don't know anything about gear.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Apr 8,2007 11:57am
hahaha CreamNeck.

I saw a commercial on tv last nite that warned of lymph node cancer, and to visit www.checkyourneck.com
I lol'd.

yeah kok, everything your looking for i really dont find in emgs. to me, your describing the sound of the dimarzio air norton or a paf pro in the neck.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Apr 8,2007 12:37pm
Ya, Im sure theres way better humbuckers for the job, but I already have an emg and as Im sure you know, I cant use any non emg with it.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Apr 8,2007 12:37pm
I have a PAF Pro in my Les Paul and it certainly is creamy. Helps that it's with a Les Paul, but it's creamier than the stock pickup it had in there before.

Hahaha I love commercials that leave you confused as to whether they are meant to be taken completely seriously or not.

I'm not a total technical gear geek, but I know what gives me the sounds I want.
Anything ceramic will pretty much give you those warm bluesy chops with good sustain.
Look into Gibson or DiMarzio pickups.
EMGs are over rated.

Good luck Kok!

Oh, and I want it to go on record that I think active pickups are a fucking joke...

.....Kinda like 7 string guitars. :-P

Better over rated then rated poorly,
