I'm listening to the album, Moontower, and all I hear is Opeth. I thought I was listening to Opeth at one point and I had to check my iTunes to make sure.

I'd say it's more like they mutually influence each other.

swano is one of my favorite musicians. the guy writes great music, has a great voice, and can play the shit out of all kinds of instruments. he's one of the most creative metal musicians ever and doesn't rip anyone off.

Dan Swano is so underrated for his musical contributions. At least in this part of the world. Him and Peter Tatgren are both musical geniouses. I believe he also worked with Mikael Akerfeldt in Bloodbath (who fucking rule by the way.) Your are looking at a genre of music where a number of these like-minded bands have tremendous influence on eachother. Bands like Opeth, Katatonia, Green Carnation, Porcupine Tree, Diabolical Masquerade, and October Tide write with the same feeling at times but I believe they all have something different to offer. "Rip-off" is a term that gets thrown around with little conviction these days.

Like I said, I think my approach was off because I couldn't find a similar phrase for the one I mentioned. Dan Swano is amazing, I do agree.
