Ok, no high horse here....

Im no super shredder, nor do I know how to hot rod mod a Tube amp.
That said, I have been playing music for a long time, and listening to it since I was a tiny choade.

Everyone is gonna have their favs, when it comes to gear. Usually people find what they like (if they can afford it), and stick to it. Theres so many combinations, you may never find that perfect sound, so if you find one youre happy with, great.
However, this obviously may not work AT ALL for another guitarist in your own band, let alone a different genre of music, etc.

It comes down to your playing technique and your playing style.

If someone that plays with more emotion, or feel, would he benefit from a digital-ish uniformed sound?

Maybe,
Maybe not.

Would the howl of an old Orange stack, suit a more technical, booktaught player?
Maybe ....Maybe not.

See what Im gettin at here?

Of course there will be narrow categories, and eventually it may come down to 4 or 5 that may actually do what you want, but to say the best pickup/guitar/Amp Head/ Cab is *blank*, is basically your own opinion, which may help or hinder others, but is never wrong.

So the answer is yes, HZ's thru a Behringer all the way!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHALOLZ!!

Well, in my pickup thread, I was looking for advice, not saying OMG EMGS SUCK LULZ. People can play what they want to.

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Jan 24,2007 8:40am
right, I agree with Kok on this one. my love of modern high gain through vintage speakers works for me, but on the other hand, it may not work for someone else. this is probably one of the most reasonable and honest threads I've read in a long time.

(and when I had my Jackson, the HZ's sounded fine through my Behringer, LMAO! but then again, it's all a matter of personal taste)

cheers!

I agree with this, but sometimes I feel like people dont use enough mid range and they get that overly rectified sound that doesnt cut through the cymbals, the dude's like "hows it sound to you?" sorry pal all Im hearing is a chainsaw, rectifers bug me

toggletoggle post by Sinistas   at Jan 24,2007 12:01pm
I have my mids at 1:30 for distorted tones. However, Rectifiers don't sound like a chainsaw. That's Marshall's bag.

toggletoggle post by JDDomination   at Jan 24,2007 12:13pm
Im not saying that all recs sound like a chainsaw but I think there is often a sizzle on Mesas, especially when some people cut out the mids, I like the bassy and mid rangey sound that also cut through the band, I play a Marshall but I have it setup a different way

toggletoggle post by Sinistas   at Jan 24,2007 12:16pm
Most of the time when I hear Rectos live, they're all "whomp" and have nothing to cut through. It's just flub.

toggletoggle post by passerby at Jan 24,2007 12:16pm
bro check out my posts. Emg hz's in conjunction with behringer cabs is the only way to go. You gotta be a meathead not to know that. Also Marshalls are no good. A crate solidstate head through a behringer cab with hz's is the shit.

toggletoggle post by PatMeebles at Jan 24,2007 12:18pm
A lot of it is finger tone. Greg Howe doesn't use that much distortion (I don't think) but I don't think anyone notices. So how much control you have over your left hand plays a part. What guage strings you use count too.

I'll agree with that, listen to Spawn of Possession, they're crazy heavy, and the guitar is more overdriven then distorted.

Yeah you spend alot of time searching for that perfect gear that's gonna get that amazing sound but so much of a guitarist/bassist's tone comes from the fingers. Great players can make a p.o.s. shit instrument or amp setup sound versatile and good.

People should spend as much time getting their technique down as they do obsessing over what gear to play. (This is more a criticism to myself than anything)

toggletoggle post by Anthony at Jan 24,2007 1:15pm
wow weird! didnt realize we were both gonna quote that one sentence at the same time

toggletoggle post by Sinistas   at Jan 24,2007 1:27pm
I've been obsessing over both recently. haha

i couldnt agree more
My shitty Tama kit sounded better than a lot of more expensive kits i heard when playing out on local shows and such...but it's all in the heads, tuning, and most importantly the way i play
Case in point, the new kit i got is by no means a bank breaker but sounds better than a lot of kits i've heard recently

cool, 'cause i couldn't really see how holmes would take offense to something so harmless...

but then again, Fender players are a bit ... different

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Jan 24,2007 11:11pm
hahahah eat shit and live!!!
Im not currently a Fender player, but have owned a strat and a tele, and they are great for what they are.
But theyre not metal.

Im more offended that you called me 'holmes' than anything.
You know I dont speak Spanish !!

I spend more time trying to figure out what clean sound I want more so than distortion, maybe because I'm just set on what I like with it. True tho, if your fingers aren't doing it you'll hear it more no matter what the guitar/amp/pickup.

toggletoggle post by GoatCatalyst   at Jan 25,2007 12:13am
it's cool...

ese

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Jan 25,2007 12:16am
I definitely agree with this. But I also don't see the harm in finding a sound that compliments what my fingers are up to.

I don't think too many people were actually saying, "no fuck you, this is the best gear in the world." Just posting what they use.

Meh.

yeah, amen to that brian.

i think it was mark who brought up the spawn of posession sound. its true, their tone is definetly all in their fingers, but imagine how much better their sound wouldve been if they had just turned their gain a little more up and a touch more mids?

i say maximize tone and technique.

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Jan 25,2007 3:27pm
one of the things we all have to realize is just because (for example) blue's rig or kok's rig or brian's rig kick ass, dosen't mean that that tonal quality would work for, say, myself.

we can all say that some gear is better then others, but who's really right?

the answer: all of us...? none of us...?

you could spend thousands on gear, but it's only going to sound as good as you can play. I want to buy new gear, but I'd rather hone in on my abillity as a musician first before I go and drop loads on a botique head and expensive cabnets. I've got a good idea on what I'd like to get for gear, but it's not going to do me any good if I can't play for shit. I mean, I'm no slouch, but I don't think my abillity merits spending a small fortune (that the wife would probably divorce me over... HAHAHA) on new gear that won't make me play any better.

We all have in our minds what we consider the 'best tone' but that kinda stops at us. Just because someone says "OMG d00d! this is the best head EVAR!" dosen't mean that it's the right gear for you.

we all have our individuality as people, and our tone should be the same, or else we'll end up sounding like every metalcore band on the planet with almost identical tone, or all those death metal bands that are completely devoid of tone and deliver their brutallity through gurgling vocals, blasting drums and a wall of guitar noise that consists of nothing more then distortion.

phew... that was long winded...

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Jan 25,2007 3:32pm
But well spoken.
Exactly what I was getting at, as well.

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Jan 25,2007 3:36pm
cheers!

I knew I could explain it well, it's just long winded, hahaha. I think I wrote more in that post then in some of my term papers in college. HAHAHA!

I'm all about individual sound & tone. I may not be "tone master" blue or "my gear's worth more then your car" brian (seriously, your engl's worth more then my car alone HAHAHA) or anything, but I know what sounds goo dfor me and works for me, and in the long run, that's all that really matters, isn't it?

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Jan 25,2007 3:43pm
Yes it is.
Thats why I laugh when doofus say, oh *blank* is wicked harsh or tinny....
etc. Even a room will affect that, so anything is possible/obtainable within reason.

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Jan 25,2007 3:47pm
this also falls in with the SolidState vs. ValveState vs. All Tube debate, I've heard sick sounding solid state heads, and crappy sounding tube amps. once again, it's all a matter of opinion. Chuck Schuldner swore by Marshall valvestate heads, because that's what worked best for him. a couple of people hear swear by crate solid state heads, beacause those work for them, some of us swear by rack gear, because that's what works for us. any way you slice the best tone is what setup works for you.
