New site? Maybe some day.

i have old tapes i'm trying to convert to mp3 or any type of file i can store on my pc. i'm trying anything, not knowing my ass from my hand when it comes to this shit. so this is what i have so far...
my stereo looks something like this with rca jacks in the back
from there i have an adapter
6-Ft. Y-Adapter, 1/8" Right-Angle to Two RCA Plugs
that goes from the back of my stereo to the microphone jack of my laptop
no sound is coming from the laptop?
i'm guessing this is a stupid attempt at what i'm trying to do.
if anyone has a clue as to how the fuck i do what i'm trying to do, please share your thoughts

you need to make sure you're plugged into the outputs on your stereo, not the inputs. on the laptop you need to make sure that the mic input is the default recording device and that the input volume is turned up. go to the volume control to check that out. |

how do i make it the default recording device? |
you don't want to go the mic. the mic is mono only! |
open up your volume control
then click options
properties
recording |
yeah you really want to use a line-in input |

do i really need one of those?
i just want to do it the cheap way you know? |

i can't even figure that out?
how do you ope up your volume control? |
I used Audacity

My roommate bought an external soundblaster live soundcard at Staples for like $30. It plugs into his USB, and has rca inputs. He just ran his stereo outputs to the souncard, and was able to convert all his tapes to MP3. He even had all the song titles and album covers, but I'm not sure how he did that.

I think thats the one he has. It's almost $50 from there, but he got it at Staples with a rebate for $20 or something.
just use a cable in the line in input and record |
so it seems fairly simple?
some of the shit we recorded isn't mixed well at all but i guess that's another ball game. |
its a tape though so you wont recapture the ultimate clarity
but its not like you are recording into a microphone |

yeah, i'm not too concerned with the quality. it's a bunch of noise anyway. |
rick... think before you buy....
if you are doing recording, you can buy a multi-line in card and then mix it on your computer.
I was going to link the SB that pete linked, but the cheapest I saw it was $52. it's a slick card and I almost bought it a while ago. |

so, the soundblaster is the way to go ey? |
it's only got one input but rocks.
I was saying, think about what you might want to do with it, before you buy. |

so i dl'd that program, have the rca's going from the back of my stereo to the mic input on my laptop... nothing? no sound? no activity on the Audacity? |
the_reverend said: open up your volume control

i went to my
-control panel
-sounds, speach, and audio devices
now what? how do i make my mic my default |
click advance until device volume.
then options
properties
recording |
still no fucking sound?
argh |
you are thinking wrong...
if you select mic from the recording properties, then you can record, but you won't hear it while recording unless you go to the volume control and un-mute the mic |
where the hell's the record button? haha |
what are you using to record? |
i have a solution...
i will shoot myself in the head now
*i dl'd audacity, so i'll give that a shot? |
you need something to record like a program to be able to record. |
Throw it against the wall really hard and call it a whore. |
Audacity is a recording program? |
RichHorror said: Throw it against the wall really hard and call it a whore. |
that only works on my girlfriend |
i can tell i almost have something because when i hit record on Audacity and play it back, something comes out of the speakers but not what's on my tape? |
The calls are coming from inside the house! |
the sound blaster is better.
mess: pull out dick, insert knife. your files will be transfered in no time! |

I'm not been in school for a while, but it's 5x like 1x? where any number times 5 is itself? |

I'm pretty sure you weren't looking for anything. as a matter of fact, I'm 99.9% sure that you were really looking for photos of girls masturbating to look at while you listened to holidy voicemails from your various family members.
you disgust me. |
how about i rape all of you while your kittens watch |

Ok.....try this
Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control
Then click Options and click Properties and click the little button for Recording and hit OK
Then make sure that the little checkbox under microphone is checked and the volume is turned up....not all the way but turn it up a little over halfway or so. |
That pic is so uncalled for |

i just tried that. while it's recording, the green line is staying flat? and when i play it back, no sound. |
ok...
i fucked around a little and threw a headphones adapter on the end where the rca's are supposed to go and plugged it into the phones jack on the stereo. now we're getting somewhere.
that little recorder thing works pretty good. |
i do think the most important, question yet to be asked is...
what tapes will you be ripping and uploading for us??? |
GoatOfCatalyst said: i do think the most important, question yet to be asked is...

trust me, you don't want to here them. i have some old tapes of our drunk'n jam sessions. just thought it would be neat to have on a pc. |
now...
my next mission...
how do i convert a wmv file to mp3? |
Drag them into Itunes, and it converts them automatically |
then I have no idea...go to Download.com and look for a program to convert them I guess |

Xilisoft CD Ripper - version 1.0
Flexible tool used to extract CD tracks to MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG Vorbis, VQF, APE with ease.
Xilisoft CD Ripper (2.75 MB) |
"Itunes....It's not just for Ipods anymore" |
i'm catching shit from every end |
I don't have an iPod either, but I still use iTunes. It rules. |
So are you successfully getting audio from the tapes onto your laptop now?
Also... did you say the laptop has a line-in jack on it? (some (most?) don't). |
and Christ... people like iTunes? I absolutely hate it. I'm wondering if it changed at all since the last time I used it. Apple still makes it right? haha |
What'd you hate about it? |
i fucking hate itunes, i use Media Monkey |

yeah, i actually was able to record stuff from tape to the recording device the laptop came with. i went from the headphones jack to the mic jack on the laptop.
i'm not sure if it has a line-in jack on it. i'll have to check when i get home. |
Rev,
i just bought this on lunch break for 50 bucks. i took your advice because you know your technologeeeeeez. oh yeah and Arrowhead too.
MSD: most lappies don't have line-ins.
mess: cool, it's a nice unit and should work with audiology. I'm guessing you can save as mp3 or wav from audiolody. if not, install CDEX from sounceforge and then just drag and drop the wavs into cdex and it will mp3 them. |
most "normal" meaning cheap ones don't |
can i use this program on more than one computer?
or do i have to register it and only use it on one? |
i give up. fucking fuck fuck |
