i have old tapes i'm trying to convert to mp3 or any type of file i can store on my pc. i'm trying anything, not knowing my ass from my hand when it comes to this shit. so this is what i have so far...

my stereo looks something like this with rca jacks in the back

from there i have an adapter
6-Ft. Y-Adapter, 1/8" Right-Angle to Two RCA Plugs

that goes from the back of my stereo to the microphone jack of my laptop

no sound is coming from the laptop?
i'm guessing this is a stupid attempt at what i'm trying to do.
if anyone has a clue as to how the fuck i do what i'm trying to do, please share your thoughts

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Jan 14,2007 3:36pm
fuck you then

toggletoggle post by DeRtOxIa   at Jan 14,2007 3:40pm
you need to make sure you're plugged into the outputs on your stereo, not the inputs. on the laptop you need to make sure that the mic input is the default recording device and that the input volume is turned up. go to the volume control to check that out.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 14,2007 4:07pm
you don't want to go the mic. the mic is mono only!

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 14,2007 4:08pm
open up your volume control
then click options

recording

toggletoggle post by DeRtOxIa   at Jan 14,2007 4:08pm
yeah you really want to use a line-in input

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 14,2007 4:10pm
you need one of these:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOTRANSIT

My roommate bought an external soundblaster live soundcard at Staples for like $30. It plugs into his USB, and has rca inputs. He just ran his stereo outputs to the souncard, and was able to convert all his tapes to MP3. He even had all the song titles and album covers, but I'm not sure how he did that.

http://www.creative.com/products/product.a...ory=1&subcategory=206&product=10702

I think thats the one he has. It's almost $50 from there, but he got it at Staples with a rebate for $20 or something.

toggletoggle post by hunterhunter   at Jan 14,2007 4:26pm
just use a cable in the line in input and record

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Jan 14,2007 4:29pm
so it seems fairly simple?
some of the shit we recorded isn't mixed well at all but i guess that's another ball game.

toggletoggle post by hunterhunter   at Jan 14,2007 4:35pm
its a tape though so you wont recapture the ultimate clarity
but its not like you are recording into a microphone

yeah, i'm not too concerned with the quality. it's a bunch of noise anyway.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 14,2007 4:36pm
rick... think before you buy....
if you are doing recording, you can buy a multi-line in card and then mix it on your computer.

I was going to link the SB that pete linked, but the cheapest I saw it was $52. it's a slick card and I almost bought it a while ago.

so, the soundblaster is the way to go ey?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 14,2007 4:44pm
it's only got one input but rocks.
I was saying, think about what you might want to do with it, before you buy.

so i dl'd that program, have the rca's going from the back of my stereo to the mic input on my laptop... nothing? no sound? no activity on the Audacity?

argh

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 14,2007 5:41pm edited Jan 14,2007 5:42pm
you are thinking wrong...
if you select mic from the recording properties, then you can record, but you won't hear it while recording unless you go to the volume control and un-mute the mic

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Jan 14,2007 5:47pm
where the hell's the record button? haha

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 14,2007 5:51pm
what are you using to record?

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Jan 14,2007 5:53pm
i have a solution...

i will shoot myself in the head now

*i dl'd audacity, so i'll give that a shot?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 14,2007 5:55pm
you need something to record like a program to be able to record.

toggletoggle post by RichHorror  at Jan 14,2007 5:56pm

Ok.....try this

Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control

Then click Options and click Properties and click the little button for Recording and hit OK

Then make sure that the little checkbox under microphone is checked and the volume is turned up....not all the way but turn it up a little over halfway or so.

i just tried that. while it's recording, the green line is staying flat? and when i play it back, no sound.

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Jan 14,2007 9:43pm
ok...
i fucked around a little and threw a headphones adapter on the end where the rca's are supposed to go and plugged it into the phones jack on the stereo. now we're getting somewhere.
that little recorder thing works pretty good.

Also... did you say the laptop has a line-in jack on it? (some (most?) don't).

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 14,2007 10:42pm

yeah, i actually was able to record stuff from tape to the recording device the laptop came with. i went from the headphones jack to the mic jack on the laptop.
i'm not sure if it has a line-in jack on it. i'll have to check when i get home.

MSD: most lappies don't have line-ins.

mess: cool, it's a nice unit and should work with audiology. I'm guessing you can save as mp3 or wav from audiolody. if not, install CDEX from sounceforge and then just drag and drop the wavs into cdex and it will mp3 them.
