does anyone know why when you place a bid on ebay sometimes it says you've been outbid by another person right away? it happens way too fast?

it's cause the person above you had a minimum bid that was higher than yours.

why doesn't ebay tell you that though? they say enter a higher bid than $. so you put that bid in and it's still not enough. i'm definitely missing something.

because when you are looking at an item that's been bid on, you are seeing the price that it the second highest bid. you can't see how much the highest bidder has bid. when you bid, you need to guess the ammount that is just higher than the highest bidder. if you bid is below that, it automatically says you lost.

The fun of that is knowing that while that high bidder will still win the auction, you just raised the cost they have to pay.

ok. i was thinking along those lines. i bet people that are selling stuff, set up a fake username and bid on their own stuff to up the price? could that work?

I just snipe manually. That's just good strategy, there's nothing morally wrong with it. Shill bidding, however, is bullshit.

i remember bidding on a shirt that started at 8 bucks. next thing you know, right before the auction ended, some ass hole bid, i went all the way up to 50 bucks, dollar by dollar.

I always try to snipe. I will not bid on something until the last few seconds.

I'm watching something right now... it's been listed like 10 times. but the item's really really hot now. I will probably loose it.

at the last minute ...put a ridiculously high bid in, and it will put the price up to 5 bucks over the previous high bidders max bid, making you the winner.
This has it's up's and downs.

Ebay raises prices in increment of usually 5 dollars.

and being that you do it 30 seconds before the bid ends...the other guy dosent have a chance to raise you.
