I was shooting Mortis deveia and he came up, telling me that he didn't want me taking pictures.

back story: I showed up like I do all the time and he took me aside, saying "if you want to shoot the event as an event, I'm willing to work with you otherwise, if you are just here to shoot bands, you should probably be over at club r[something I've never heard of before]. that where anderson is doing the other bands." so mortis deveia gave me a ticket from ones that they both. that's how I got in.

I know they're definitely a couple.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 6,2006 2:01pm
the other bar is rocko's bar a grill. WTF is up with being able to shoot ozzfest, but when it's some little fest in a local town has something, I get all sorts of fucking grief. unbelieveable.

toggletoggle post by RichHorror  at Aug 6,2006 2:05pm
What the fuck is the difference between taking pictures of the bands playing or shooting it as an event?

toggletoggle post by fishcakes at Aug 6,2006 2:10pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 6,2006 2:19pm
no clue. I left that club and walked over to another club were anderson is putting on a show. the bands here are aren't anything I know or what to see, but anderson mar is totally nice. as soon as I lifted up my sun glasses, she said "oh, you are aaron, you are all set" she is so nice. this club is a lot nicer too, AC and it looks like they serve scorpion bowls and do comedy on fridays. I'm probably going to take a couple pictures here (of a band I don't care about) and then head out.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 6,2006 2:45pm
yeah, I shot a couple pictures of a rock band. I'm going to hang out with my brother for an hour before heading to another show.

toggletoggle post by HailTheLeaf  at Aug 6,2006 2:49pm
Who the hell wouldn't want you taking pictures of them? Oh no, free publicity, not that! It's great when bands have managers and clubs who harass the people trying to help the bands...

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 6,2006 3:03pm
if I didn't say it above, I'm going to myspace/email all the bands I didn't get to shoot the exactstory of why I couldn't shoot them.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Aug 6,2006 4:09pm
you should have asked why. he was being a dick so be one back...he aready told you no and ask WHY NOT? you should have told the bands and have them bitch him out
attn tobands on this board..boycott this guys shows..respect the rev

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 6,2006 4:42pm
he said that to me when I was going to change cameras then went back to where I wasn't allowed now to go so that he could set up 12351 video cameras or something. when I got there, I already had him take me outside of a club and to the back corner of the building to have that akward covno about the suttle nuances betweem shooting an event or just shooting bands. I just got fed up and left. anyhow, wasn't typeo negative suppose to play this show? or atleast a band who had more than a 30 minute drive to the show?

eh, whatever. on a positive note, mortis deveia was excellent and well worth this bullship. I highly recomend that steveOTB, NSN, the DBH, IDN, jonah, and others put them on a show.

and I'm not going to ask people to boycott their shows, but if people ask me or tell me about the fact that they are going to "work with" matt... I will just tell them the factual story of my latest dealings with him and suggest that they think again about doing it.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Aug 6,2006 4:45pm
why didn't you just ask "do you know who i am?"

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 6,2006 5:03pm
ha! cause I wasn't wearing my "IM KIND OF A BIG DEAL" shirt. plus, the singer for MD did that and the dude said "this wasn't authorized ahead of time."
matt knows me and I've shot a few of his/anderson's shots before in MA with no issues. I've even chatted with him.

plus, I'm not egotistical enough to say that. I think the facts of the current metal/hardcore doesn't dictate that you "have to" know me or RttP, but if you don't you loose a large place to promote shows/venues/bands with a concentrated interest base. so I would not say that to someone cause they can do things without paying lips service to me, it's just 12-30,000 daily viewers might make it a little easier.

we had a great time. crowd was perfect and i was just drunk enough for my van halen - jump impersonation. the two venues broke up the day. great group of bands to chill out with.

HOWEVER, i do have a problem with aaron gettin the boot. i think a lot of the stuff aaron/rttp stands for is vital for local shows. there is a lot more i could say on the issue, but it's too fuckin long and complicated (i must have drafted this at least 4 times already). maybe over a beer or something at the next show when i start getting lippy.

i'm pretty sure, though we were asked to play, we aren't going to do the festival. though, wouldn't be opposed to set up a show with some of the bands that played. rttp cordially invited.

oh yeah, some dude spent almost half hour dusting the exterior of his car while i was out on the patio. weirdest shit ive seen in a while.

when he says he's pretty sure, he means we aren't. i refuse to. i asked matt straight-up after we played what the deal was for it, 'cause i had heard they were just offering it to any band that played because it's $500 plus ticket selling, and his response was, "it isn't just any band." so we stuck till the end to see what the deal was. band attendance was taken, and there were probably more than half of the 22 there. they gave out a sponsorship to one band from each venue, and he said there were 5 bands at the spyder room that impressed him.

after the sponsorships, he had every band come up to grab a contract.

so obviously it IS just any band willing to shell out the money. i suppose when he said "it's not just any band," he meant that only the bands who stuck around till the end got the chance. ha!

now, i don't know how the rest of you would run a festival, but if a band didn't impress me in some way that made me think they could handle playing a bigger festival, i wouldn't give them a contract. i would, however, give them constructive criticism and tell them to keep working their asses off.

and i think that would be the more personal way of handling it, not giving every band a contract and putting down the microphone to make it SEEM like a more intimate situation.

and then when he briefly discussed his "problem" with rev, i got pissed. you want support and promotion, and you tell one of the most hardworking and dedicated people in the music scene he can't take pics? that's a good way to make a lot of enemies.

sorry for the long-windedness.

haha.

i may have been slightly drunk at the time, but essentially he said he has tried to work with you in the past and asked for photos etc. which he never got, and if you just take pics and post the bands and never mention the name of the event, it doesn't help him at all. but my thought is, even if you don't mention it, if people are interested they will find out. the only bad promotion is no promotion.

oh, and another thing he said was that the purpose of the festival was to help strengthen the music community by bringing bands together and giving them an opportunity to play a bigger show. well, how much is it helping the bands when he tells YOU you can't take pics of/for the bands? doesn't make any fucking sense.

toggletoggle post by mcmahon  at Aug 8,2006 1:05am
yah, holmes walked out. i was sitting directly across the small table from him with henry from mortis deveia. i made no attempt to hide the fact i was pissed. it got realll quiet in the room and i think it made him uncomfortable.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 8,2006 1:34am
funny... I have never to my knowledge ever received anything from him except the occasional spamletter or a post on this site (user http://www.returntothepit.com/profiles.php?nickname=Othniel77 ). he has never asked me for pictures and besides the last conversation, all the conversations that we’ve ever had was either him explaining the fest thinger or what bands they were getting to headline the festival. I did a quick search through my emails (I have 98% of all my emails since 1999-ish) and the only instances of NEPG are from system things that I get when certain changes happen on the RTTP server.

As everyone out there knows, I'm extremely hard to "work with" and an extreme pain in the ass. Don’t the serfs know they must pay the rev tax? How dare they! Let them eat cake…

Then he gets all butt hurt because I didn't mention his name in association with every show. I know if I had gone to the "fest" I would have had something on the main page or something about the fact that is was NEPGMwhatever... but when every single show a fest or pre-fest, that is a bit ridiculous. Sometimes a show is just a show and sometimes things are actually done altruistically... at least on my end.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 8,2006 1:40am
It’s also ridiculous since MD actually paid for the ticket that was in my pocket. By the way, the show I headed to instead of this one had over 250 kids at it and was in the middle of the most inbred town in NH, Epping (even Raymond makes fun of Epping). When I got there, the two kids at the door asked to shake my hand. A fun time was had by all.

It's not really a big loss at all, but the audacity to say the rev just takes pictures and posts the bands and never mentions the name of the event. The name of the event is usually in the forum thread...

This guy is extremely short-witted. Not only for the Rev business, but for having the nerve to ask $500 for an UNPROVEN fest. There is no evidence that any band paying $500 will have any measure of success equivalent to that $500 or that they are even getting a chance to play with large nationals and further their exposure. What is this? Perhaps Jack Koshick is secretly behind the PaganGothNewEngland fest or whatever it's called.

Keep your pay to play scams out of our fucking scene.

A-FUCKING-MEN!

We played one show that was put on for Spaz-tik ltd. on some random Wednesday night somewhere in Somerville. It was a total waste of fucking time as it only turned out to be a band practice in front of the other 2 bands and the 'promoters'. Before we played that freak show broad and her fucking d&d-obsessed-looking boyfriend solicited us to pay them to record a live set that night, take pictures, and/or video tape us. No wonder why they don't want the rev to take pics - they want the bands $$$ and because the rev not only undoubtedly takes waaaaaaaay better pictures but he also does it for free and that just must be so unsettling to them con artist promoters.

I smell a boycott.

I don't think you're missing anything. It has always seems like a fucking scam anytime we are offered to pay $$$ up front to get on a bill. I am more often than not offended that some fucking dildo wants me to pay them $$ to play a show that they, not I or my band, will make $$ on. Besides, as it is understandable that bands are expected to bring a decent amount of people to a gig, isn't it the job of the promoters to promote the show?

Hi, this is Anderson Mar, co-organizer of the NEPGM Fest, and yes, Matthew's other half. I wasn't sure if I should respond to this thread or not, but I decided I would put in a few words, to try to clear up a misunderstanding.

I handle alot of press and promotions for the Festival (http://www.nepgmfest.com), which will be taking place 9/23-24 at The Palladium. We are currently "touring" (read: doing regional auditions) in several New England cities throughout August.

Manchester has a very vibrant metal scene, which we were very pleased to be a part of on August 6th.

Most of the press and photographers were invited to come to Rocko's to do photos and coverage; and are certainly welcome to watch the NEPGM Fest auditions.

I believe Matthew wasn't expecting the press to do much coverage at Spyder Room, and and most likely would have preferred to have known in advance if someone was going to come and do photos and/or writeups there, since it was a very busy day, and he was also doing video recording for the bands as part of an NEPGM Fest documentary we are working on. The Rev did come and take photos at Rocko's for RTTP of a few bands performing there, and he has also covered a few of my shows at the Skybar, as well as an event of ours at Reflections in Chelmsford.

As for the Fest, we are not "pay to play" - we offer bands a business opportunity. They do get a 50-ticket package, but if they sell all 50 tickets, they have the opportunity to make a profit. As someone pointed out, we are not Locobazooka (not involved with ClearChannel!) and we are trying to do something for the scene, and improve community and "unity through diversity". Matthew and I don't make any profit off of this, considering the costs of booking the Palladium and national headliners. We are doing this to breathe new life into the N.E. scene. He is an excellent businessman with a clear vision for getting New England back on the map and out of the hands of the emo craze and stagnation

As for what happened last year, our first year of the Festival, everything is out in the open under the "Press" section of our official website, http://www.nepgmfest.com

We did end up moving the venue on 3 week's notice, but that was due to censorship on the part of the Lowell City politicos, who were "concerned" about punks, goths, and headbangers hanging out en mass in a ballpark. Either of us would be happy to answer any questions you might have. I am sorry for any misunderstandings that may have occurred.

~Anders

well this is the rev's other half. I think it was unprofessional to tell him not to take photos when a band got him in. Bands asked him to go to that show and take photos.

If your husband needs people to ask his permission then he should make that clear to the bands. Just sounds like his ego was bruised because Aaron didn't specifically ask him in advance. How come other people were able to take photos? I mean no disrespect to you, aaron said you were nice to him, but the situation is quite ridiculous.

All promoters should be cordial and GRATEFUL to any and all press that bothers to show up to their events. Bottom line.

Ok..time to chime in. I recently spoke to Matt again (this is the 2nd year he asked us to do his fest)...unfortunately, we absolutely cannot get past a complete & total difference in philosophy. As I stated to him, Ichabod will NEVER-
1)We will NEVER, EVER "pay to play"; whether you consider making the purchasing of tickets mandatory a"pay to play" situation or not is irrelevant. The fact that the "business opportunity" is MANDATORY for bands playing is the relevant part. If a band wants to pursue an "opportunity", let them solicit you, the promoter, not vice versa. Opportunity by definition is never mandatory, dig? Opportunity is synonomous with "chance", not with "obligatory, requisite, compulsory, binding, forced, imperious" ,etc.

2)We will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER "sell tickets" in this manner. I explained to Matt how I did advance ticket sales through a website for the Sweet Leaf festival (which was a HUGE success and all the bands were psyched with turnout AND were paid very well). He didn't agree whatsoever with not making the ticket sales the bands' responsibility. As the promoter for Sweet Leaf fest, I felt directly responsible for ticket sales, and all I asked the bands to do was direct their fanbases to the website where they could buy advance tickets for a discount if they wished. Bands SHOULD help by posting on their websites, flyering, mailing lists, etc., but leave the ticketing related stuff to the promoter and/or club depending on the situation.

3) We will NEVER play a "battle of the bands", albeit called an "audition"...we've got zero to prove to anyone and feel strongly that there is absolutely no objective way to "judge" such an event anyway. If the judges happen to prefer black metal, hip hop, or country-western, we're fucked. Why bother? It is the most tired trend amongst local band scenes in existence. Besides, we are "local" only in geography. Otherwise we do not aspire to be prominently known as part of any "scene" other than to be recognized worldwide for what we do. We're not auditioning for shit...if you are promoting a new event, you need to audition for us and make us believe your event is fucking worth playing and lugging my gear out to. Usually, the bands with the most friends who turn out "win" the battle, or, ahem...audition. The lamest trend I've seen in recent years are the "party busses" that bands rent to transport their local kegger to their shows. Piped in audiences! Alright!

Therefore, Matt and I, although amicably, reached an impasse. I will continue to host and promote events like Sweet Leaf festival, with a host of well-paid locals who don't have any obligations other than to show up and play as opening acts for the likes of Warhorse, Today is the Day, and Dove in front of a full house. I tried to explain to Matt that although he and Anderson may LOVE the Bella Mortes of the world, expecting them to be a festival headlining draw is not going to cut it in this area. No disrespect to Matt as he has been nothing but nice to me, and Anderson seems extremely sweet, but I told him that if/when he is willing to reassess his current policies, then Ichabod will consider helping him out in whatever way we can. Until then, and when he stops this kind of promoter/ego silliness with the Rev, it's a no go and a withering on the vine.

The Rev is always welcome with open arms at any Ichabod shows or any of my "fests"...as a matter of fact, , as his work provides more "promotion" than any promoter of a one-time show could, perhaps we should all be paying HIM.

None of those bands in the article are capable of filling up a ball-park, nor could they fill up Tsongas Arena. So I find it suspicious that they would have had a problem with moving the gig because they 'expected to play a ballpark'. The only one that's even decent is Bella Morte, and I've seen them play for 50-100 people max.

toggletoggle post by ichabod  at Aug 10,2006 9:54am
Oh, and if you're a musician who says they approach their craft as a true art form but you pay to play something like Locabazooka, to me you're as worthy of respect as a preachy vegetarian who sneaks to McDonalds for a dollar Big Mac after the bars close or an AA meeting attendee who stops for a couple of nips on the way home. Fess up and let the world know you're creating "music" just to get laid with the mall-goth chicks or to feed your otherwise feeble ego.

So the bands do NOT have to pay you $500 to play, or could pass on this 'business opportunity' and you'd still allow them to play?

He is an excellent businessman with a clear vision for getting New England back on the map and out of the hands of the emo craze and stagnation

I'm no fan of the emo craze or stagnation myself, but considering that N.E. has metalcore bands that debut near the top of Billboard itself, and can outdraw most goth/metal/punk bands in the world...whether I like those bands or not, we are definitely 'on the map'. Don't kid yourself.

Uh, that's EXACTLY what pay-to-play is.
Promoters passing off the responsibility of selling tickets to the bands suck. I can't believe there are still bands that fall for that.

1.) Putting any scene on the "map" basically means jocking a bunch of shitty mainstream sounding bands to put money in promoters pockets.

2.) There is no emo craze. That was like 5 years ago. Crappy metalcore bands like Lamb of God are the big draw now. Anyone can get away with claiming to fight something that was already over before they started fighting it.

3.) Anyone else get a little nauseous when ANOTHER dickhead comes out of the woodwork to try and save "the scene"?? Seems like these self proclaimed scene heroes always have the same things in common:
A. They were never in a worthwhile band.
B. No one has ever heard of them before they started trying to "save" everyone.
C. They need you to do the work for them.
D. They're trying to make money by doing as little as possible.

4.) If we're gonna talk about doing something CONSTRUCTIVE for the "scene" how about we talk about a guy who gives bands a chance for huge exposure through photographs, messageboard word of mouth, and a internet/radio program FOR FREE, while covering virtually all expenses out of his own pocket? Now let's talk about that same guy getting kicked out of a show for doing just that.

5.) If you're paying to play a show you're a sucker and you deserve to fail.

6.) Any numbnuts that tacks the word GOTH onto anything is a fucking Loooooser.

But guys...you're paying to SAVE THE SCENE!!!

retards. I don't know about anyone else, but I think the fact that you can go to a show just about any day of the week and have a good time indicates we've got a worthwhile "scene" here. We don't need Count Chocula to "save" us.

I thought about signing up Of The Betrayed for this but before I go out and sell tickets I'd like to know if it'd be worth it. If there's a few nationals with really good draws then I might consider it. Tickets need to be sold at $15.00 and you have to sell a minium of 20. Good thing is you get to keep $5.00 for every ticket you sell which is the most I've heard to date.

If it seems like I was bashing some of the bands by the comment I made I'm sorry. It's not that I don't like playing with all these great bands around here because I do and all the bands we've played with so far have been really good people and I consider them friends now; it's just I don't like having to sell tickets at all.

or are you telling me to be careful because you've heard bad things?

well... read the entire thread above.

i'm just wondering how he's going to fill 37 hours of bands through 3 consecutive days. seems when you get that much time for any event, people are more apt to just go see the bands they want to see and won't bother to stick around for others they don't know -- especially for an all ages show in the middle of the day.

the crazies don't even go out till at least 8pm! haha.

Ahh maybe I should've re-read the thread. Sorry I'm slow. From what I've heard so far that's a pretty big turn off to playing that fest and you're right, all the bands that sell tickets to their friends will be more likely to just see their friends band and take off which is pretty lame. That and most people don't have the energy to go through a 3 day festival. Rev I'll have to check Mortis Deveia out, my drummer said he checked them out a few days ago and was pretty impressed by them. It's time I put on another show. It's been a while since I've booked one. Anyone got any idea of any all ages clubs or some contact info on halls?
