A Scanner Darkly

Excellent flick, VERY loyal to the original book, with a few liberties taken to bring it into the 21st century (which is a given).

So yeah, Pirates rocked. Scanner rocked...

Will Clerks II and Lady in the Water break the streak?

toggletoggle post by VoidExpression  at Jul 16,2006 9:43pm
I don't think there's any doubt about that.

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Jul 16,2006 9:44pm
Yeah, very unfortunate :(

I'm really hoping Clerks II will be more Clerks than Jay & Silent Bob, but all the promos seem to contradict that, even if they did play King Diamond in one of them.

toggletoggle post by VoidExpression  at Jul 16,2006 9:50pm
It's going to pretty unwatchable I think, but everyone is going to see it regardless just to see for themselves (at least I probably am).

Lady in the Water will no doubt be another movie with a pretty cool premise, but Shyamalan will botch the execution...and the whole fairy tale-as-reality thing has been done to death by now (I think/hope The Brothers Grimm drove the final nail into that coffin).

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Jul 16,2006 9:51pm
Hahahahaha, yeah, Grimm sucked, despite having the hottest chick in the world in the film...

toggletoggle post by chrisnli at Jul 16,2006 9:51pm
clerks 2 arleady is better than clerks because of the addition of superhottie Rosario Dawson

I saw Pirate s 2 last night....not really my thing, but a good flick.
Very good f/x of course, but no Keith Richards?@!?!
I guess hell be in the 3rd one.

I can't wait to see Pirates and Clerks II.

M Night Shyamalan sucks.

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Jul 16,2006 10:00pm
Pirates is great.

I like M Night, but I hated The Sixth Sense.

m. night shamalamadingdong sucks at making movies. it pisses me off that stupid people still pay money to see his cinematic abortions.

lady in the water actually looks better than his other movies, plus paul giamatti is in it, so it might not suck.

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Jul 16,2006 10:27pm
Paul Giamatti rules.

"WE DIE WHEN WATER TOUCHES US"

-both premise and ending to all M Night movies. boring.

M Night kicks ass. I even liked the Village. Now start your bashing.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jul 17,2006 1:19pm
The Village was a sad excuse for crap. so was Signs. the only one i have seen so far that really caught me off guard was The Sixth Sense.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Jul 17,2006 1:24pm
unremarkable,unoriginal,uninspired shit

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 17,2006 1:27pm
the sixth sense was the shebang!
the village was ok, but not that great.

toggletoggle post by SacreligionNLI at Jul 17,2006 1:28pm

I would like to remind you that you have the worst taste ever.

I think people overstate how bad The Village was. I was entertained the one time I saw it.

A Scanner Darkly was done by the dude who directed Waking Life, right?

I know they're releasing Clerks 2 in both color and B/W, but will the B&W version be widely screened, or are we going to have to sacrifice our dignity and see it in color?

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Jul 17,2006 2:57pm edited Jul 17,2006 2:59pm
I liked the Village but only because I ignored all reviews and spoilers so it was a nice little surprise in there. It was still a tense and well-acted flick. Not his best though.

I liked Unbreakable and Signs the most. If anyone wants to have a Signs debate, I am go. Good movie that really creeped me out, one of the best 'rural' interpretations of an alien invasion ever filmed.

I didn't like Sixth Sense because a little emo kid who can see dead people is just not something I can watch for more than 5 minutes without cracking up and fleeing from the TV.

I will go see Clerks II in b/w because I am kvlt like that.

With Clerks 2, as far as I know, the movie itself is in both B&W and Color, i think it shifts at some point, I'm pretty sure that the didn't film the entire movie in both. Only certain parts are B&W not the whole movie.

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Jul 17,2006 3:13pm
You're probably right.

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Jul 17,2006 3:22pm
to convert from color to B&W is insanely easy with todays technology. so in threory they could have 2 versions of the film

I wanted my Clerks II in black and white. Is that too much to ask? Kevin Smith is a fucking sellout.

toggletoggle post by Beaver McD at Jul 17,2006 3:36pm
In theory its possible to make it all B&W. Being a huge fan of the original Clerks, its definitely in my Top 3 of my favorite movies of all time, and I've pretty much followed Kevin's career since he started, I'm not going to lie when I saw that I was a bit dissapointed when I saw it in color. The only thing I think is that it's 12 years later, it's definitely going to be a much different film from the original, simply because of who Kevin Smith was then and who he is now, I know that the humor will be raunchy and vulgar which is awesome, and of course Jeff Anderson and Brian O'Halloran will deliver, but I don't expect it to surpass the original. I would like to think that it will be really good. I've seen about 10 minutes of the movie when I went to see him do a Q&A in Philly and that was wicked funny, so I'm hoping it will be good, but I'm not going in with any expectations.

Why, because of the casting in Jersey Girl? That's about the only reason I can think of... Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Dogma were all great, Mallrats was pretty good, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was a silly campy movie - but was intended to be that, so it worked on that level - and making intentionally campy movies is not really commercial anyway.

All I can see that would be considered selling out is the main character casting in Jersey Girl, which was supposed to be built around the devastating, tragic death of one of the characters early in the movie, but viewers were practically celebrating when she died because of who they cast to play her.

toggletoggle post by pam   at Jul 17,2006 4:01pm
I'm pretty sure Clerks was in B&W because that's all Smith could afford...not to be "artistic". I could be wrong.

Some parts are in B&W. I'm fine with color, I can't wait for that movie.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD  at Jul 17,2006 4:03pm
Yeah, if Kevin Smith is deciding at this point that a certain part of his movie would be more effective in B&W, and a certain part in color, he's a director with a good track record, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I see the movie.

I wasn't exactly serious about the $ellout comment, but I guess I didn't make that obvious.

However, there is a huge difference between Clerks and his later films. Clerks was a refreshing, slice-of-life film that was great because of its dialogue, situation, and characters.

Dreck like Dogma and Jay & Silent Bob are just a string of parodies that drove the characters into the ground. I did not enjoy them. Mallrats was alright.

toggletoggle post by kevord  at Jul 17,2006 9:55pm
I think the very begining of clerks 2 that takes place in the quick stop are in b&w and then it switches to color. At least that's how it seemed in the trailer. I'm sure this film will be weak in comparison to Kevin Smiths Earlier films. Lets face it he tried to move away from dick and fart jokes with Jersey Girl and now he's crawling back to were the money is. In that way he is a sellout. He even dropped out of directing the Green Hornet film cause he knew he's a one dimentional director who couldn't handle it.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD  at Jul 17,2006 11:18pm
If he took it, he'd be called a sellout for taking the Green Hornet film instead of focusing on his own material.

I liked Dogma, it still has that smart Kevin Smith dialogue in it (although I'm probably biased due to the fact that the first time I saw it, I was drunk and stoned and then immediately did it with the chick I watched it with).

The Village was quite possibly the worst, most over-hyped piece of shit EVER. Well... besides Trivium.

Seriously, it all boils down to a fucking retard in a mask!

I mean, yeah - retards CAN be pretty creepy but FUCK!!!

M. Night needs a good, old-fashioned open-handed SLAP.

Same goes for Kevin Smith. I'd like to say that I'll avoid Clerks 2 like the HIV, but my inner-15 year old will probably compel me.
