New site? Maybe some day.
This is a long shot but I am gonna try anyways. I want to start a new Death Metal project that is a little different. And I already have the sound thought out. But I need to find people kinda unique.
Desired Inspirations
Cannibal Corpse
Pat Metheny
Carcass
John Coltrane
Wormed
Miles Davis
I am going for a fusion of Death Metal and Jazz if you haven't already figured it out. I have a MIDI demonstrating my idea if you want to email me for it.

Don't forget Cynic and Atheist. |
und Pestilence, und 'Obscura' by GorGUTs.
Edit: not Gorgasm. |
that band red tide was kinda like that also, watchtower! even believer! |
A little Believer, yep. Watchtower. Spastic Inc. And so on. Those weren't really death metal, but hey. |
Martyr from Canada have some jazz/fusion influences people should definatey check them out. Dan Mongrain is one of the best guitarists in metal right now. |
Naked City and Painkiller already did this 15 years ago.

Naked City is fucking awesome. |
i saw naked city once, very very interesting group. the guitarist was like 50 years old and the drummer, whoa, the guy is incredible bald drummer! when i saw them they all had like music stands in front of them and were reading the music or something. that japanese guy was nuts! and the guy on the sax was crazy himself! |
John Zorn is from another planet. |

The only Naked City album I really liked was Radio everything else is a little too cracked out for me. But yeah Radio is awesome. |

What's Sleep Terror a band? an album? |
animalrampage said: What's Sleep Terror a band? an album? |
its a band from northern CA. Just a guitarist and drummer, no vox. The guitarist also plays bass on the records. When I first heard them I was like "oh my god, best shit EVER!" But, I have alot of their recordings now and they don't have as much impact on me anymore. every song kinda follows the same formula.
They have wicked technical parts (kinda slammy DM style) and then jazz parts that trade off back and forth. Every song is like that. It is definitely amazing, though, check it out. |
Eh, I couldn't get into it. The 'jazz' parts sound like the very worst instrumental record guitar masturbators of the 80s, or failures at Mr. Bungle/Naked City kookiness, some of the death/thrash riffs would be cool in a band with some vocals and songwriting. Gotta agree with Anthony that it's a little formulaic. |
Wow Sleep Terror Kills. I wish they were coming to Mass on their tour I would love to see that stuff live.
Does Gorguts do a lot of jazz-influenced stuff or is it just one or two tracks to check out? |
Just that one record Gorguts record "Obscura" was really strange, and contains some abstract jazz concepts. Their early albums were straight up death metal. |
all us Catalyst dudes are HUGE Naked City fans. Our guitarist, Beard, has a Zorn tattoo on his taint. |

that is badass! |
Sleep Terror, Pavor and Gorguts are all Jazz influenced death while Skerik and others are Death influenced jazz but I think Zorn is the only one that created a balanced mix |
My hard on for DEMILICH still hasn't gone down. |
death metal and jazz huh...
didnt they alreayd do that?
oh yea they did, its called GRIND. |

These are all amazing groups. Metheny bores me to death though. You would like this group called The Dead Kenny G's. I really can't wait for everyone that has commented to hear Animal Rampage. |

no one mentioned HUMAN REMAINS.. |

Virulence from Boston had a shitload of jazzy bass lines. I still miss this band! |
listen to John Zorn Naked City |

nate said: Virulence from Boston had a shitload of jazzy bass lines. I still miss this band! |
yea, they were awesome |
Wow guys... wasn't looking for musical recommendations hahahahahaha.. But yea.. thanks..... anyways? |
On to the music!!! I have heard Naked City and that is definitely not the sound I am going for here. Think more along the lines of heavy use of symetrical scales over chord changes. Lots of swing during slams. Altered chords and half diminished chords rule here. For a vocals I had in mind someone who can do everything. From manic screams to Frank Sinatra esque singing. (Don't forget the sick gutterals)More or less inspired by bungle.
All that shit guys posted is really good. But it really has nothing to do with the sound I am going for. Think more along the lines of Pysopus mixed with Necrophagist.... not really though.. :-\

This is true. |
No jazz is necessary on a Repulsion CD. |
if you can hang with the vocals, WATCHTOWER and PSYCHOTIC WALTZ are fucking incredible musically |
Right, but again, they are not death metal jazz. They are more like prog metal jazz. Watchtower is fucking badass, and I've been listening to them for like 18 years now.
You NEED to track down Spastic Ink if you like Watchtower, it has some of the same guys and they just go completely batshit. |
Metalguy send me the track at funkycantor@gmail.com |
sleep terror is so good he had a nasty drummer for awhile to but i guess its back to just him again...free form jazz and death metal rocks |
I was booking Sleep Terror but they never got back to me with once I had a club and they just so happened to book something in NYC that night too. |
An Albatross's Blessphemy is pushing the envelope a bit |
Where can I find audio samples of Torture Garden and Pain Killer? |
wow.. and i just checked out Cynic for the first time. I can't beleve I wasn't aware of these guys. really impressed. |

yeah man some of the best music ever made with gitter, bass and drums, in my opinion. If you don't dig the robot vocals, they're not on the demos, which I happen to prefer. The 89 and 90 demos are the best. |
