Arthur Magazine interview with Godsmack - ridiculous

Talking to Godsmack (whose album is No. 1 on the charts) about what they use their music for.


Godsmack have sold millions of records. Their fourth album, IV, was released on April 25. It sold 211,000 copies in its first week in the USA to debut at Number One on the Billboard chart. I interviewed Godsmack frontman/lyricist/producer Sully Erna on Monday, May 1, 2006 by telephone. Here is the full transcript of our conversation. Jay Babcock (Editor, ARTHUR Magazine

HOW WAS THE JIMMY KIMMEL SHOW ON FRIDAY? YOU WERE OUTSIDE PLAYING, RIGHT?

Yeah its always cool to do that because its so set up for musicians, you know. Big stage, live crowd. Its not so like indoors with a camera rehearsals. Its a lot easier.

YEAH. SO YOU GOT TO BE BACK OUT IN FRONT OF YOUR FANS.

Yeah. It was good. It was fun.

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC, DO YOU THINK?

Ummm Ive seen em range as young as 8 and as old as 68. [chuckles]

I would say, if I had to guess what our age group is, its probably between 18 and 40.

I would have to say thats kind of where were at, maybe more, majority would be 18-30? But I, we definitely, we recruited a lot of new fans off of that acoustic record

an older audience. And this record seems to be drawing in a different kind of audience as well, so. You know were just trying to continue to expand and not have a ceiling over our heads.

RIGHT. YOU GUYS ARE STILL HAVING A GOOD TIME MAKING MUSIC AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?

Of course. Were musicians, thats what we do. It may not always be great music, but we love making it! [laughs]

CUZ MUSIC HAS A POWER?

Mmm hmm. Its a universal language.

SO WHAT YOU SAY WITH IT, AND WHAT YOU DO WITH IT, HAS AN EFFECT?

Of course.

SO I NOTICE YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN REALLY INVOLVED WITH PROMOTING THE MILITARY. [1]

Well, they actually came to us, believe it or not. Somebody in the Navy loves this band, because they used Awake for three years and then they came to us and re-upped the contract for another three years for Sick of Life. So, I dont know. They just feel like that music, [laughs] someone in that place thinks that the music is very motivating for recruit commercials I guess. And hey, Im an American boy so its not Im proud of it.

YOURE PROUD OF RECRUITING YOUR FANS INTO THE MILITARY?

Well, no. [laughs, then jokingly] Dont be turning my fucking words around, you!

WELL, TELL ME WHAT YOU MEAN. YOU SAID YOUR MUSIC IS POWERFUL, ITS GOT AN EFFECT, LIKE YOU SAID, AND YOURE LETTING THE MILITARY USE IT. THE MILITARY, WHO ARE THEY RECRUITING? 18 TO 30-YEAR OLDS, RIGHT?

I guess I dont know what their recruit age is. I know its at least 18.

YEAH, THEY GO DOWN IN TO THE HIGH SCHOOLS NOW.

My thing is Listen, heres my thing with the military. Im not saying our government is perfect. Because I know that we make some mistakes and we do shitty things BUT, BUT. You wouldnt have your job, and we wouldnt have our lives, if we werent out there protecting this country so we could lead a free life. So theres kind of a ying and a yang to that. Sometimes its not always the best choices that we make, or we stick our noses in other peoples shit, but at the same time, we protect this place enough that were able to like pursue careers and do what a lot of people in other countries arent able to do. Theyre kind of picked and theyre chosen to be whatever they become Im, Im, Im proud to be an American, Ill tell you that.

SO YOUR COUNTRY, RIGHT OR WRONG?

Uh, no. Not right or wrong. But Im proud to be an American. I love my country. Ive seen the depressions and how people live in other countries and how theyre told what to be, and they dont have the choices that we have. I do love that about our country. So, you know And I actually sympathize with a lot of the soliders, and the military in general, that are trained to go out and protect FOR us, and what they have to go through, its really kind of shitty in a sense that these young kids have to go over there and die, sometimes, for something that isnt our fucking problem. And that kind of sucks. So what I have to do is at least support them, because they dont have the choice that we do.

THEY DONT HAVE THE CHOICE BECAUSE?

Because theyve decided to fight for our country.

AND THEY DECIDED TO DO THAT BECAUSE?

That was my opinion at the time. The whole war thing, and trying to keep us up to date like If you remember, back in other wars, we didnt have the opportunity to follow it through the media, and CNN, and the newslive updates and that kind of thing. And I thought that for the most part you know we were allowed to follow it as best we could through the media sources that were feeding us information.

People feel that they get an adrenaline rush out of it or whatever, so, it goes with whatevers an extreme situation. But I doubt very seriously that a kid is going to join the Marines or the US Navy because he heard Godsmack as the underlying bed music in the commercial. Theyre gonna go and join the Navy because they want to jump out of helicopters and fuckin shoot people! Or protect the country or whatever it is, and look at the cool infra-red goggles.

First of all, it was a COMPUTER image, a computer-animated helicopter that didnt There was no scene of a desert in there. It was a helicopter that rose up from the screen and scanned the audience. It was an EFFECT. And then it shot out missiles that hit the stage.

Because the intro to Straight Out of Line has the sounds of like, a war thing going on.

OH I SEE. SO ITS JUST SORT OF A CONCEPT THING. It might not have been done in the most tactful way, but I think he clearly exposes how lame and ignorant Godsmack are for letting the navy use their music in recruitment ads. They took a big check and never gave it a second thought. Then Sully claims they aren't a political band and won't discuss anything about the people who handed him that big check and that they do. I don't see a thing wrong with the interviewer's approach. It's hardly his fault that GODSMACK doesn't put any thought into where their music is licensed.

i would just like to state that i am glad someone finally confronted godsmack about this. one of the most important issues facing our nation, the army's use of godsmack's music to brainwash young people, has finally been addressed. thank you, arthur magazine, for solving our country's biggest problems one crappy WAAF rock band at a time.

Considering they allow Godsmack to appear in their commercials I can't see why they ever had a problem with using a Village People's song for recruiting. Don't even try to tell me that Sully, the rest of the band, and all of the band's fans aren't pickle smokers because that would rob you of all credibility.

How could the use of Slayer's music by the military be worse if Slayer had nothing to do with it? You could argue that the military used Slayer's music for a more evil purpose, but that's about it. They used Metallica to intimidate captives also, and when the band found out about it they weren't too happy. Godsmack SOLD the rights to use the song to the navy, they were actually asked, they took money, and they were fine with it. There's big fucking difference.

I doubt that there is a SINGLE human being who joined the Army, went off and died SPECIFICALLY because of a fucking Godsmack song that was already years old. They signed up their song to:

1) make a ton of fucking money (something anyone in here would do, even the Arthur magazine fag if he had a band)

2) existentially, show their support for their countrymen killing and dying in a distant land for a corrupted government and a country who would partially turn their backs and blame them from the comfort of their sofa and Lost re-runs.

But if you think there is a SINGLE kid overseas in our Armed Forces fighting because he heard the words "I.....stand alone!" in a gay nu-metal song then I'm afraid you are mistaken, and should tear out your ovaries so that you save us all a lot of trouble in the future.

If Sully supported pre-emptive strikes, and it's on tape, why doesn't he just fess up to it? Regardless of how you feel politically, the hypocrisy here is insulting. What Sully said was popular in 2003, but is a minority viewpoint now, so he wants to pretend he never felt that way and erase it from history; he's not a politician, but he's acting like one. The one defense to make this interviewer look completely out of line is "hey I'm just a musician, I'm not trying to make political statements", and it totally falls apart when he's afraid to back up his own words because they're not popular anymore.

If Sully still backed up pre-emptive strikes, I could respect his viewpoint. If he no longer believes in attacking first, but admits that he used to believe in it and has since learned otherwise, I could respect that, too. But after preaching and financially benefiting from what was popular in 2003, and pretending it never happened when it became unpopular in 2006, I think as much of the man's mind as I do of his musical talent.

You can support the troops without turning yourself into a recruitment poster. Actively involving yourself in recruitment is contingent on your belief that the current government policy is reasonable, because without that, it would mean you're helping aid the process of innocent young men being placed in the line of fire for no reason. However, playing a concert for the troops and boosting their moral makes sense to everyone, regardless of how they feel politically, because even if you believe the troops are dying in vain, they especially deserve a good Slayer concert on their way out.
